Although hosted by the University of Liverpool, the charity is a completely independent organisation.

The charity's objective is the advancement of mathematical education through the award of bursaries to teachers, student teachers and pupils in schools to support activities for which funds are not otherwise available. Applications are made online through the charity's webpage at http://www.livmathssoc.org.uk/cgi-bin/sews.py?JoyceHattonMemorialBursaries. There are application deadlines on 30 September, 31 January and 31 May. For the year 2022/23, these were extended to 31 October, 28 February and 31 July on a first come, first served basis.

This was our first full year following the Covid pandemic. 11 applications were received during the year, of which 10 were awarded and one was rejected due to the applicant failing to provide additional information requested. Of the 10 successful applications, 8 bursaries were paid and 2 held over until next year. One bursary awarded in a previous year and held over was cancelled due to the applicant not responding to emails. The 8 bursaries paid out totalled £1946.36; 4 were awarded in connection with resources for Maths clubs, one for funding some Maths investigation nights involving parents and 3 for various types of workshop.

The opening balance for the year was £7009.96. Expenditure on bursaries was £1946.36. There was also a payment of £60.00 for bank charges (reimbursed by Liverpool Mathematical Society).
