Liverpool Mathematical Society Bursary Fund (Charity no. 1156909) Annual Report 1 August 2021 – 31 July 2022

The Liverpool Mathematical Society Bursary Fund is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation whose only members are the trustees.

The Secretary and Treasurer of the Liverpool Mathematical Society are ex officio trustees. In addition, there are at least three appointed trustees. New trustees may be appointed by a properly convened meeting of the existing trustees. The current trustees are Mr. Anthony Carter, Dr. Ian Jarman (Secretary, LivMS), Mr. Michael Jones, Mr. Kenneth McKelvie, Professor Peter Newstead (Treasurer, LivMS), Mr. Lonnie Readioff and Ms. Davina Stanley.

Although hosted by the University of Liverpool, the charity is a completely independent organisation.

The charity's objective is the advancement of mathematical education through the award of bursaries to teachers, student teachers and pupils in schools to support activities for which funds are not otherwise available. Applications are made online through the charity's webpage at http://www.livmathssoc.org.uk/cgi-bin/sews.py?JoyceHattonMemorialBursaries. There are application deadlines on 30 September, 31 January and 31 May. For the year 2021/22, these were extended to 31 October, 28 February and 31 July on a first come, first served basis.

3 applications were received during the year, all of which were awarded. There were also 3 bursaries carried over from the previous year; 2 of these were paid during the year, the third was carried over for a further year. The 5 bursaries paid out totalled £1227.88; 2 were awarded for starting maths clubs, 2 for funding workshops and one for the purchase of algebra tiles.

We have received reports on 4 of the 5 bursaries awarded and paid in the year 2019/20; the fifth report has been requested. We have also received reports on 3 of the bursaries paid out during the year 2021/22; the other two have been requested.

The opening balance for the year was £7237.84. Expenditure on bursaries was £1227.88. There was also a payment of £35.00 for bank charges (reimbursed by Liverpool Mathematical Society). A donation was received from Liverpool Mathematical Society to the value of £1000.00. The closing balance was £7009.96. This compares with the pre-pandemic balance of £6862.00 in August 2019.
