CHILDREN’S TRUST Charity Number 1156786 ## Trustees Report for the period 1[st] April 2023 to 31[st] March 2024 Trustees: Marilyn White (Chair), Raymond White (Treasurer), Keith Norton, and Val Norton As in the past our focus of attention has been on providing for the Home of Peace Children’s Home in Kenya. As previously the trustees agreed we should not spread our limited funds too widely but focus on this project. The work at Home of Peace has continued very well, children’s lives are being saved, children are being returned to the community as educated, healthy adults. The Department of Children’s Services are happy with how the home is run under our supervision ## EDUCATION The new primary school year in started February, but the Kenyan government has changed the way the school years run. In the past primary school was standard 1 to 8 and they then went to secondary school for 4 years. Suddenly primary school is only standards 1 to 6. The next year is now called Junior Secondary ( and because it is no longer Primary it is no longer subsidised by the government). Then the following year they go to Secondary for 4 years so 1 year less of schooling. The cost not including uniforms for the new Junior Secondary is more than 3 times the cost of what we used to pay. We believe education is essential as without it these children will leave Home of Peace with no real hope for a decent future. The primary school children at Home of Peace are changing schools and will be going to a new private school, called Peace Academy, which is government registered. The government school that our children have had to attend up to now is actually terrible. The buildings are falling down the toilets are falling down, it is dangerous to be there and unhygienic, and it is very hard for the headmistress there to get decent teachers. The new school is next door to Home of Peace and they have agreed that as it is for a Children’s Home they will only being charge half what we would have had to pay at any other private primary school. ## BEDS We have been told, that on inspection, the wooden bunk beds our children use need to be replaced because the wood has cracked and in some cases broken and that means they are considered dangerous as they could result in children being injured and we would be held responsible. The beds are now about 11 years old and were made for us by a local woodworker but the wood has not stood up to 11 years of heavy use and we need to replace them with metal beds. We are still waiting for the exact cost, but it will be around £3000 in total. ## WATER One of the problems we have faced from the very beginning is the situation with water supply. Obviously water is essential. It is used for cleaning, washing, laundry, drinking, cooking and so many other essentials. Being in a very rural location there is sadly no infrastructure for a water supply and our nearest supply is the river which is about half a mile away from Home of Peace. Through the generosity of our supporters, over the years, we have installed a pipeline that runs from the river half a mile to Home of Peace and then empties into a large water storage tank. We then add chemicals to the tank to purify the water so that it is fit for drinking, cooking, etc . We have diesel water pumps located along the pipeline to bring the water to the home. This is far from ideal for many reasons. Firstly the water pumps keep breaking down. The reason is that we are expecting them to do more than they are capable of doing. Each time they break down it costs hundreds of pounds to get them repaired or replaced. We previously attempted to have a borehole or well sunk but sadly they hit a layer of solid rock and were unable to get through this and reach the water supply. March 2024 Our pumping system has broken again. At the moment we have employed the services of a lady with a couple of donkeys, and she loads these donkeys with barrels of water from the river and transports them up to Home of Peace a few times a day. We pay her for the service. This is far from satisfactory and it means that we have a very limited supply of water. Our manager at Home of Peace, Kevin and our purchasing manager, Erick have been trying to find a solution and they have found a professional company who believe that the problem was when we sunk the well it was in the wrong location. They have said that before doing any digging they will bring in a surveyor. They are adamant that if we try again and sink the well where they tell us it should be sunk, we will have a good and abundant supply of clean drinking water rather than the somewhat unsavoury revel water that we now have which needs to be chemically purified. We have made it clear to them that we cannot risk spending money unless we are completely certain that it is going to supply what we need. We therefore proposed to them that if they, as the experts, are certain and are willing to dig the well, pipe the water from the well to our storage tanks, using an electric motor (that we will supply), we will be willing to seek funding for this **. But we will only pay for it if it works and supplies enough good quality water to meet the needs of Home of Peace. In other words they, as the expert, must take the risk this time not us.** This money will need to be paid to them once the work is completed in approximately one month’s time. ## NEW CHILDREN Throughout the year the Children’s Court commits new children to Home of Peace whenever we have a vacancy. They arrive with just the clothes they are wearing and we have to have medical checks carried out and supply them with everything that they will need. This is an unavoidable but constant pressure on our financial resources ## KENYAN TRUSTEES Every month d different Kenyan Trustee visits for a full day, inspects everything, talks to staff and children and sends us a detailed report.
