Trustees Report for the period April 2020 to March 2021

Trustees: Marilyn White (Chair), Raymond White (Treasurer), Keith Norton and Val Norton

As in the past our focus of attention has been on providing for the Home of Peace Children’s Home in Kenya. As previously the trustees agreed we should not spread our limited funds too widely but focus on this project.

April 2021 2021 was an odd year. Covid continued causing chaos but we thank God none of our staff or children have been infected.

Our Health Dept Manager Erick Jafeth Ochieng has done an excellent job. In his April 2021 report e wrote:

We are all observing covid 19 protocols with regular hand washing and sanitizing prioritized…… Environmental hygiene has been maintained; the toilets are always cleaned and washed on daily basis with the flushing of water available sufficiently….. the kitchen, is above average standards of personal and environmental hygiene.

During May The academic year in Kenya resumed in May instead of starting their new year in January. They will now finish last year’s studies and start their new academic year at the end of July this was due to Covid.

Our secondary school and technical college students are all supplied with a bike so that they can cycle to and from school as it is too far to walk. One day as they cycled, a dangerously driven car hit one of our girls. He failed to stop. The other students cycling with her helped her and contacted Home of Peace. The bike is a mess but thank God she was not badly injured.

In August 6 new children were committed to Home of Peace last Friday. 5 will go to Primary School and one to ECD.

At Home of Peace we have a generator because mains electricity often fails for days at a time.

On Friday 6th August the generator caught alight and there was a real danger of it exploding and hurting or killing people and destroying the buildings. Our Assistant Head Boy, John Charles, bravely grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran into the generator room and extinguished the fire. The generator needed to be re-wired, fitted with a new coil and a new battery but had he not acted so quickly I dread to think what may have happened. We presented him with a Certificate of Bravery and a small gift.

When we took over running Home of Peace there was just one small building. It had been paid for by Life Community Baptist Church in Horsham, England.

Since then, in order to be a registered Children’s Home we have had to build many new rooms and facilities and they have all been built to a high standard using brick and cement.

These include four dormitories (each with an attached staff bedroom for the housemother or house father), a sick bay and first aid room, a kitchen, a dining room, the Social Workers house (originally our nursery room but later converted), toilets with wash rooms, a laundry room, bicycle storage, etc.

The old building continued to serve. It had been repaired and repainted but 11 years later it was still serving as our storeroom, our social workers office, and as our second dining room.

Sadly it died.

It had never been properly built with bricks and cement just with wood and mud plastered and painted so we were amazed how well it had lasted but sadly the weather and termites eventually destroyed much of the structure even though we had done our best to maintain it.

As a result of the generosity of a lovely, faithful couple who support Home of Peace every month we were able to commission builders to remove the old building and build something more suitable in its place. They felt God was leading them to make this amazing gift. This was a tremendous answer to prayer.

After the work was almost completed a charity, Foxglove Trust, very kindly agreed to pay to have the floors tiled so that they would be much more hygienic, and longer lasting. Foxglove have been a wonderful ongoing support to this work.

Four of the Technical College students left Home of Peace and stared their lives in the ‘real world ‘.

The secondary school students who have pursued the academic pathways also did extremely well and we were thrilled this year to have our first student go on to university. He had done so well that he was offered a bursary to cover part of his fees and one of our sponsors very generously offered to cover the remainder of his fees and living expenses etc for the four years that he will be studying for his degree.

Confirmed as an accurate record Mrs Marilyn White Chair. T.L.C Children’s Trust 20[th] Dec 2022
