## **T.L.C. CHILDREN’S TRUST**

Charity Number 1156786 Trustees Report for the period April 2020 to March 2021

Trustees: Marilyn White (Chair), Raymond White (Treasurer), Keith Norton and Val Norton

As in the past our focus of attention has been on providing for the Home of Peace Children’s Home in Kenya. As previously the trustees agreed we should

not spread our limited funds too widely but focus on this project

## **APRIL 2020**

We got a message from Home of Peace telling us that they urgently need all 56 mattresses replaced. We supplied the funds and they were delivered much to the delight of the children.

Later in April Home of Peace Children's Home was advised by the Dept of Health to supply all our children and staff with face masks. They needed at least 2 each so one can be worn and the other washed. 56 children + 16 staff = 72 people getting 2 each = 144 masks were needed as a minimum. In addition we also supplied masks to all the staff children to protect them as well.

Funds were supplied

## **RAIN**

Not far from Home of Peace between March and April almost 200 people lost their lives to overflowing rivers and mudslides, while 40,000 have been displaced from their homes. But the heavy rain started causing damage to Home of Peace buildings. Getting under the foundations and even causing the kitchen floor to be damaged. We arranged for the construction of a barrier around every building. At the same time we repainted all the dormitories both inside and outside and the kitchen and dining room.

## **MAY 2020**

We were reminded why we do this work when the Dept of Children’s Services brought us 2 new children a boy 4 years old and his sister is 12 years old.

They and another sibling age 6 months were being brought up by their Mother who died and they were left with nobody. Home of Peace social

worker, Faith, managed to get the baby placed in a home that has the facilities for babies while these 2 children were admitted to Home of Peace.

Now they are safe, have a home, food, clothing, medical care, will get an education and have a chance to develop into productive members of society rather than just living on the streets, begging, stealing and in all likelihood dying.

## **JUNE 2020**

REGISTRATION RENEWED Delighted to say that after inspection and examination the registration of Home of Peace has been renewed by the National Council for Children's Services in Kenya. Registration is subject to renewal every 3 years and is only granted if we pass their careful inspection which we did.

We received details of all the Children's Homes in Kenya that re-applied for Government Registration. They require all homes to re-apply every 3 years.

276 Applied, 233 Were Rejected, Just 43 were approved

HOME of PEACE was APPROVED

There was only 1 other home in the entire Siaya area that received approval

## **JULY 2020**

On the 8th of July we were informed by the Kenyan Government that all Kenyan schools are to remain closed until 2021

## **STAFF CHANGES**

**ERICK OWINO** . Is the man who helped found Home of Peace and he has worked as our Administrator, Purchasing Manager, Driver, part of the leadership team and a trustee since we took over 10 years ago. He is also a gifted preacher and teacher with a calling from God to serve his church, so he is now reducing his Home of Peace time to 3 days a week. During those days he will continue with everything except the Admin and the other 3 days he will be working as a Pastor.

**KEVIN NANDI** . Kevin has been working with Erick as the Assistant Administrator and Reserve Driver in a part-time capacity. He will now take over the Administration full-time and still act as a reserve driver when Erick is not on duty

**HEALTH** Home of Peace children have all been given a medical check-up by the Department of health and the good news is that there were no major problems.

**MANAGEMENT CHANGE.** James, is having difficulty with his eyes. He has had 1 cataract operated on and is waiting for the operation to his second eye but at the age of 74 we have encouraged him to retire at the end of this year.

He will remain as Chairman of the Kenyan Trustees and will still be our Community Liaison Officer in a voluntary capacity.

## **OCTOBER 2020**

We had a number of urgent needs including new school shoes and uniforms for those who have outgrown them during lockdown, raincoats etc for the new children, repairs to the fencing and a number of other things. Funds were supplied

## **DECEMBER 2020**

Just before Christmas the children at Home of Peace were thrilled to receive their 3 new Swings and a metal Sea Saw made by a welder friend of Erick’s.

## **CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR**

We were able to give everyone a special celebratory meal and they had fun relaxing and celebrating together.

## **JANUARY 2021**

RETIREMENT PARTY James was a retired factory manager and Community Elder when we took over Home of Peace. For almost 4 years he served without pay as the manager then due to his health he resigned. His health improved and 4 years ago we employed him( with pay) as the manager. He is now 74 years old and developed eye problems requiring surgery last year so he has now officially retired but will remain chair of the Kenyan Trustees and Community Liaison officer for Home of Peace.

**FIRE PRECAUTIONS** We take the health and safety of the children and staff very seriously. During an inspection we were told that we needed 2 more fire extinguishers and the existing extinguishers needed to be serviced. On the 27th of January the new extinguishers were delivered, the old ones serviced and the staff given a refresher on how to use them.

**SCHOOLS.** The school year in Kenya has always run from Jan to Dec but due to Covid the end of year exams from last December are now being held next week. And the new school year will start either in May or June so 7 months earlier than we expected.

We were only given these dates last week! It means that by May we will have to find the money for 5 new Secondary School Students and for another 15 who are continuing their education at Secondary School and 5 who are continuing their education at Technical College. We were able to cover those costs.

Confirmed as an accurate record
