On the 24th of August 2022 the Aaharam project was implemented in Mannar and Nanattan Divisional areas. MWAUK chairperson Mr. James Pathinathan along with Dr. Vinodhan, Dr. Reuben, Dr. Roy and MWC chairperson Mr. Regi Jeyabalan were present during the distribution of these Nutritional Packs.

The recipients for these Nutritional Packets were selected by the MOH with the help of Dr. Reuben. He had taken the steps to organise this project and to carry out in all five divisional areas in the District of Mannar.

One of our committee member Mr. Moses Thayan Soosaipillai sponsored this project for 6 months for 25 children in Pallimunai area.

Nava Foods distributors were selected to provide these Nutritional Packets since the cost was lower than the other suppliers and also the nutritional ingredients were more in their supplies compare to the other suppliers products.

Project 4 – Mannar Residential Sports Coaching Camp

A request from the Government Agent and the Mannar District sport’s officer to fund a residential sports coaching camp for the school students who participated in the Northern Province sports meet, representing the Mannar and Madhu zones.

After a successful 2nd place (Mannar Zone) and 5th place (Madhu Zone) more than 100 children were selected to represent Mannar District from these two zones for the National Sports Meet.

The Residential Sports Coaching Camp project was organised to boost the children’s performances and help them to bring out their best at the National level.

Association UK took place from the 28th of October 2022 till the 30th of October 2023. The fund for this project was sent to the Government Agent’s account and were used according to the Mannar Working Committee’s request.

The Mannar Working Committee took charge of this project and organised the venue, the training staff, the helpers and organised the food and lodging facilities for the staff and students. They also selected students who needed trainers and provided them with the uniform t-shirts.

Project 5 – Nanattan Hospital Refurbishment

A request was made by the Nanattan Hospital Committee to MWAUK through the approval of the RDHS to help with the refurbishment of the Nanattan Hospital. The chairperson personally visited Nanattan Hospital to inspect the necessary requirements.

The Nanattan Hospital committee agreed to find the builders and purchase the raw materials for this project and they themselves supervised the refurbishment. The required amount of £5,000.00 was transferred to the RDHS account for this project.

Project 6 – Maternity Ward Refurbishment.

In 2019 the then MWAUK committee found the need to help the Mannar General Hospital Maternity ward to improve the facilities and condition of the wards and thus proposed the project to fund the refurbishment of this project. In 2019 a mega musical event was organised and a sum of £38,000.00 was collected for this project.

Unfortunately, due to Covid this project was not implemented during the said period and was passed down to the next committee to look into. Again, due to time restriction it was not carried out. When the new committee took over in July 2022, the committee was requested by the Mannar General Hospital to look into this project and because the allocated money was available, we the committee wanted to take on this project and complete it.

Mr. Pathinathan Anthonipillai and Mr. Ramakrishnan kindly agreed to act on behalf of the MWAUK joining hands with the RDHS and the Mannar General Hospital Director and the doctors in charge of the Maternity unit.

A Memorandum of Understanding was drawn up between the MWAUK, and the Northern Province Health Authorities, Sri Lanka and the RDHS Mannar to get the approval to go ahead to do this project. An estimated amount of 37 million rupees was budgeted for this project.

A committee was formed comprising of the chairperson, secretary, and treasurer and the vice treasurer of MWAUK, Mr. Pathinathan Anthonipillai, Mr. Ramakrishnan, RDHS Dr. Vinodhen, General Hospital

Mannar Director Dr. Pushpakanthan (who was also initially in charge for the Maternity Ward and produced a plan for this project), the chief accountant and the chief engineer of the Mannar General Hospital.

A Procurement Committee and a Technical Evaluation Committee was formed in Mannar among the members to evaluate and decide the issues related to the Maternity Ward Project and call for tenders among the contractors and select the appropriate contractor for the project.

The project is up and running and Mr. Pathinathan and MR. Ramakrishnan are supervising the project and Dr. Vinodhen and Dr. Pushpakanthan keep us informed of the progress of the Project.

We the MWAUK have also contacted the suppliers for the necessary equipments for the Maternity wards and have selected a supplier according to the pricing, warrantee period, transportation, installation, and maintenance. Terms and conditions were agreed, and a contract was signed by MWAUK and the Supplier, 50% of the payment for the equipments has been paid and order has been placed.

The process of ordering the Furniture for the Maternity Ward will be carried out shortly as soon as we receive the specifications and pricing.

The funds collected in the year 2019 for this project was not sufficient due to inflation and the country’s economy crisis, therefore the committee agreed to use some of the funds collected during the December 2022 musical event to substitute the short fall.

Pending Projects

Helping the remaining eleven peripheral hospitals

The committee unanimously agreed to provide to the basic needs like providing emergency equipments and medication and refurbishment for the remaining eleven peripheral hospitals in the district of Mannar. In aid to fund this project the MWAUK organised the December 2022 musical event.

To begin with, we have received the request from the Murunkan Base Hospital for assistance through the RDHS and the committee has agreed to fund their needs. We have also requested the RDHS to assess the rest of the peripheral hospital needs and submit the necessary things these hospitals require, to MWAUK.

Helping hand for the differently abled persons in the district of Mannar.

It was brought to the attention of the MWAUK’s committee by the chairperson Mr. James Pathinathan that there is a huge need for the differently abled persons in the district of Mannar.

There are around 3000 differently abled persons and some of them are born with disabilities, and some are due to the 30-year war that took place in Sri Lanka.

There are a few charities who are looking after these people and their families. Still, it is a difficult task for these persons and their families to survive day to day. Mr. James Pathinathan visited some of the centres that help these people and have had meetings and discussions to find out the needs and facilities that can bring a basic livelihood for these differently abled people.

To help and facilitate these persons there are a few charities run centres and one of them is a centre known as ‘WE CAN’. Ms. Vetri chelvi the founder of this organisation is a renowned author and social worker who is herself a differently abled person.

It was promising to know the work they do to uplift the lives of these differently abled persons are really making a difference in the lives of these people and their families.

The MWAUK committee has approved to help fund this organisation to better the livelihoods of these differently abled people of Mannar District.

Funds collected in the coming December get together will be utilised for this purpose.

I would like to take this opportunity to that Mr. James Pathinathan, the Chairperson and Mrs. Janaki Puvindran the treasurer, and the whole of the MWAUK committee members for their tireless efforts in organising events, participating diligently in decision making fundraising, and assisting in executing projects.

I also like to thank all who supported me, here in the UK and in Mannar, to carry out my duties toward MWAUK and helped me to be part of a team who has enhanced the lives of our brothers and sisters in the district Mannar in this past year.
