This year saw activities on various fronts against a background of sudden changes and postponements due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

These changes led to new professional collaborations and a wider public benefit, which might not otherwise have occurred. All three plays in the Brighton Theatre Insect Trilogy, raising awareness of humanity’s engagement with the insect world, were featured in previously unexplored settings.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The Artistic and Associate Directors represented Brighton Theatre in, respectively, Theatre From The Streets, a 12-week pilot programme of short theatre works, followed by dialogue with audiences from around the world; the establishing of the Stephen Joseph Award in memory of the Theatre-in-the-Round pioneer, for ‘work that creates an exemplary and adventurous relationship between performance and audience’; and the research, writing and promotion of two volumes of theatre memoir.

More details on these activities are given in Section D.

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

- policy on grantmaking;

- policy programme related investment;

- contribution made by volunteers.

Section D                      Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

April/May 2021: Postponement of Brighton Fringe Festival meant rescheduling the Premiere of play #2 of the Insect Trilogy, EXIT THE QUEEN, to the end of June 2021.

Pre-production involved meetings with industry professionals; liaising with Fringe and Festival companies through the network WhatNext; Arts Council funding opportunities seminar and rescheduling rehearsals.

June 2021: 3 weeks rehearsal for EXIT THE QUEEN; Artistic Director guest speaker at regional Equity meeting; premiere postponed for the third time, due to ‘pinging’ of a company member and the necessity to self-isolate.

July 2021: Targeted publicity to new out-of-festival audience; rescheduled rehearsals and performances for EXIT THE QUEEN; run of premiere performances at Latest Music Bar Brighton.

August 2021: Online presentations of short performances with feedback and panel discussion from Ashtar Theatre (Palestine), Brighton Theatre (UK), Darpana Academy (India), Teatro La Comarca (Venezuela) and Theatre Beyond Broadway (USA).

September 2021: Special performance of play #1 of the Insect Trilogy MOZZZ! A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF AN UNDERCOVER MOSQUITO, at Brighton Girls’ School, as part of Brighton PierFest.

- October 2021 April 2022: Research, writing, fund-raising, casting and pre-production for play #3 of the Insect Trilogy, COCKY AND THE TARDIGRADES, towards premiere at Brighton Fringe May 2022; Artistic Director, as member of the Stephen Joseph Committee, helped establish the Stephen Joseph Award for ‘exemplary and adventurous theatre work’. Equity launch of new edition of theatre memoir by Associate Director: research and writing of the sequel.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**

We intend to build up reserves as appropriate to a small grant aided arts charity. Ideally we would like to have sufficient reserves to enable us to invest in innovative productions without over reliance on external grants.

**Details of any funds materially in deficit**

None

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

Continuing Covid issues meant that the timing of artistic activity during 2021/22 was affected, although by July 2021 performances of **EXIT THE QUEEN** showed that normality was returning.

Box Office income was £538

Donation income was £444.

   - During the year our work has advanced public education and knowledge of the Arts fully in accordance with our objects.

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.
