While 2020 will always be ren￿nt￿￿j as the year the Covid virLS thanged how p￿pIe
work, play, shop, travd, ￿laI￿Se, educate and take care of eath other, the first three
months of 2021 proved to be some of the hardest montrs the UK has faced, with a
deadlier variant causing the virus to spread more quickly, arKJ colder, darker winter
months making outsde actiwty atKI 9xialisirHJ less practical. thristmas get.togetrEr5
were can￿lled, all n(Tres*ntial shops ck)sed arKI sctrKK)Is would thy shut until mid-
March.
Teachers had by arKI large managed to help mo* children get access to tLxhnology
arKI homeschooling resour￿, but this system was less than with often the
most vulnerable children falliThJ through tr* cracks. H￿e5ch[M)ll￿j required a
tremend(￿5 amount of time and energy from parents, who were ymultaneously
juggling the demands of work, famity arKJ Never befo￿ have parents and
carers wrtnessed firsthand what chikI￿n ￿ to be happy and trEalthy- and the
Imp￿rtan￿ of play, often taken for granted in the natwl rkirrative, jumped into
the spotlighL It is within this climate that I write this retX)rt and present how
Shakespeare Walk Adven￿re Playgrournl is position&1 to meet tr£ very serious
business of play.
SWAPA has workeAI hard to rwind to the incTeased wessure on families by
extending our opening houts to include Wed* after (a￿1 soon to be
extended fvrther), providirrfj healthy. hot lunches during the half temi and Easter
holidays arKI when safe to do so, we op￿d up the coUrt￿ard during lockd0vn￿ to
allow children using the ball games court OPFKisk trE site to use our toilets, and
have access to drinkirKJ water. This erkibted our staff to stay connected with local
children and families while we waitd for our regular play pmvison to stsrt up again.
We know much the yourw childm have missed the playgrournl and we will
open up sessions to indude parental su￿￿￿1s1on as SO￿ as possible. The main
building continues to ￿ off limits to trE child￿n. with trE exception of the toilets.
The shift in how the chIld￿n can use the plaSffJround highlighted that the time was
right to redesign the outdoor areas to stimulate children's play in new ways, attratt
the older end of our danographic (11-15) and make iMproven￿rtS to the main

Aims:
Our aim is to provKle * and Stimulati￿ access play Op￿rtUnItieS young
people, primarity throLvJh the Shakespeare Walk P&lventure Playground. Through our
activities, we contribute to the developma)t of irnlivK1ual young peoples gxial,
emotional ancl physical devdopmen( and provide benefits to the local community, for
example, increawj communty cohesion arKJ ￿UCed antisocial behavior. The
Trustees have paid due regard to Charity Commission guidan￿ on public benefits in
deciding what activit￿ SWAP should Und￿tske.
The obiectves of the charity a￿ to kyowde facilities for recreation and other leisure
time occupation for children r￿KIent in Stoke Newington, and to promote their
physical, mental atKI spiritual well being to improve ttEir quality of life thr￿gh
play.
This is achieved through the day-tikthy experience provided by SWAP, and also
through 4)ecific projects, such as trips to the seagde, bike repairs workshops etc.
Hackney Play As￿￿latIOn
This is an umbrella organisation for adventu￿ playgmurKls and play provide￿ in
Hackney. HPA has a newsletter, which has information u*fvl to our charity, such as
fundraisirKJ ideas, tsaining ts our stsff and the Op￿rt￿nty to advertise our open
days and our AGM. We have also looked to recruit staff through HPA proces￿ and
have Sha￿ resour￿ and asked for supwjrt for certain thiffvJs. for instance
negotiations with LB Hackrw over the tern￿ of the Jease for tts gte.
key aCtI￿ty of ttE playground is to offer an accessible aNI safe Spa￿
children to play. The otEning hours durirwJ term time are:
wedr￿sdaY to Friday: 3:304:30pm
Saturday: 12-5pm
Holiday openirKJ tx)urs (half temis, Ea* and Sumw holidays) are 11am - 6pm

Association, incorporataj on 18 June 2010 and registered as charity on 3 April 2014.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) 6 hekl ew 12 to 18 months - it is just prior to
