Achievements and Performance

|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Flower Guild Another year of flowers has just gone by; we hope you have enjoyed them. I thank you again for your generosity with money to buy flowers and oasis. We now have a collection of silk flowers which must look very real as someone nearly always waters them! I thank you for the ladies who help me at festival times when we try to do something a little bit different. A big thank you to Ruth who does the garlands for all seasons. If there is anyone out there who would like to learn to do a pedestal, I would welcome them with open arms. We are all getting older. Carol Hams Home Discussion Group Our group has continued to meet monthly (approx) on a Wednesday afternoon at 21 Kempsfield. Over the last year we have discussed various Psalms and are currently tackling Paul’s challenging Epistle to the Romans. We do a lot of questioning and may conclude sometimes, as Charles Wesley wrote, ‘‘tis mystery all’. Members take turns in leading the discussions. Ann King Ladies Evening Group The group continues to meet twice a month, from September to July, with a good number attending. We enjoy a great variety of speakers and also the occasional quiz |
evenings. Ladies come from a variety of experiences, and come to enjoy company and an evening together. Each evening begins with a reflection, which gives thoughts for the day and beyond. This year we have enjoyed speakers who have entertained us, inspired us and tested our knowledge. One evening we learnt about the history behind a gentleman’s violin, where he had traced its previous owner, and discovered some of his exploits during the war which ultimately led to his death. The present owner then was given permission to play the violin on his war grave in Mons, Belgium. We have been entertained by John Craig and friends; Ann King has tested our knowledge with a quiz evening and our Christmas Tea was followed by a beetle drive. We look forward to an evening learning more about the work of Julia’s House, which has been our charity this year, before our outing along the Canal During the year we have held two fundraising events, which have raised £1,498 for our charity and £ 350 for the Church funds. We are always pleased to welcome ladies to our meetings. Ruth McGregor Messy Church: On the second Sunday afternoon of the month, you will usually find between 15 and 25 children, carers and helpers in church for a Messy Church session. As people arrive, they are welcomed and given a name label and a little bag to take things home in. There is usually an introductory activity then a Bible story is acted out and the theme of the session is introduced. We then go through to the hall where various activities are set out on tables. Hopefully with all the activities completed, we return to the church and talk about what we have made and done. We sing a couple of songs (sometimes with actions) and say a prayer. We then form a circle, say the Messy Grace and return to the hall to find that the activities have been cleared away and a long table is set for us to have our meal and a chance to chat. Not every family is a regular but we welcome all when thy are with us. Janine Fanshawe Music Group and Choir The Music Group and Choir continues to flourish. We work on a 4 week cycle. Some weeks are in the morning, others in the afternoon.
Week 1 - 10:30am - All musicians are welcome alongside anyone who just likes to sing for pleasure. This is a very relaxed session. Week 2 - 4:00pm - The Choir meets alongside the members who sing for pleasure. Ray leads this session. We work on a hymn to record for the On-line Musical Reflections. We also learn music to sing as an introit on the 4th Sunday of the month. Over the past year we have been developing our 3 part harmony skills. Week 3 - 4:00pm - The Choir and Singers prepare for the next church service. Week 4 - 10:30am - All musicians are welcome alongside anyone who just likes to sing for pleasure. This is another very relaxed session. The online Mid Week Musical Reflections have been very well received, and we have appreciated the feedback. Alisia Davies Pastoral Team This small group supports those in need through prayer, phone calls, cards and visits. This Easter we delivered palm crosses and Easter cards to those in residential care. If you know of someone in need of prayer, please contact either Gary or one of the team. Jean Green Poetry Group Our Poetry Group has grown in the last year with two more members. We have enjoyed our time together, covering subjects such as Humour, Animals, Birds, People and Spring. We start our get togethers with coffee then we have a prayer. We then get on with sharing our choice of poems. It's quite amazing what we find when we start searching in our own books. We can cover several centuries. We meet in the morning of the third Wednesday of the month. Do come along and join us. Eileen Robinson Prayer Group The Prayer Group meets on alternate Mondays at 10.30am and is kindly hosted by Carol Hams. It consists of 4 regular members. We begin with concern for the Church and members especially anyone in need or with health problems, sharing the concerns and including them in our prayers.
We also add prayers for those we pray for in our Sunday Services. Each member of the group adds our own prayers. This is a refreshing time when approaching God together intended as a support for St Andrews as it witnesses to the community and the work the Church undertakes. Praying together is strengthening to each one of us, so more members are always welcome. Hilary Burn Property Report I think you will agree, we are very fortunate to have such lovely premises. They are dry, warm, clean, well-lit and spacious. Furthermore, the toilets and kitchens are in good order and the chairs are comfortable! It is no surprise then that there are currently 20 different weekly activities going here. Six of these are church groups, one is a business that helps people get back into work and the other 13 are community groups that include two choirs, two amateur theatre groups, four dance groups, two toddler groups, two groups for young people and a martial arts group. Inspections The last quinquennial was in November 2022. A thorough inspection by a building surveyor was carried out on all aspects of the building. The recommendations of his report have been acted on. This year there has been a five-year inspection of the electrical installation and an annual PAT testing of the forty pieces of electrical equipment. Other professional yearly checks have been carried out on the boilers, kitchen equipment, fire alarms and extinguishers. We have also carried out our own Health & Safety check and Fire Safety check. Repairs to the roof on both sides of the premises meant there was scaffolding up for most of the autumn. The stairlift was brought back into use in January and the kitchen hatch shutter in April. Our own small maintenance team treated mould, cleared the gutters and ground drainage channels, put up some anti-pigeon spikes, replaced the doorbell and a couple of strip lights, did some planting, made temporary repairs to the ramp and laid tarmac over the uneven join between our carpark and the drive at the rear of the building. Two New Projects
Doors and Windows: We have raised the funds needed to replace the front doors and side passage door, secondary glaze the Hall windows and replace the ramp from the carpark to the back door. Quotes for the work have been accepted, permission has been granted, and work starts on the doors on 2nd June. Sound and Screen: We have raised about a third of the cost to install new audio-visual equipment and further grant applications for funding are in the pipeline. We particularly thank the following for looking after the church premises and managing its use during the last year – Dave, Gary, Jean, Marie, Marion, Portia, Trish, Rosemary and Tony. John Saunders Safeguarding There are now, unfortunately, fewer volunteers engaged in activities requiring DBSs and safeguarding courses. Whilst this has lessened the load for me, it means that the load on volunteers has increased. Please consider whether you could offer your time at the toddler group, messy church or other activities. There has been two incident requiring me to seek further advice but no further action was considered necessary, though formal reports were filed. I am grateful for support from others more expert in safeguarding to help me navigate through the complexity of supporting our vulnerable children and adults. Trish Lee SOCAT This year we have provided lunch twice for the Wiltshire Historic churches. We also provided refreshments for the carnival, lantern parade and the John Stuart memorial service as well as our church lunches. We contributed to The Lovely Lunch , a community meal, as part of Devizes Food Festival in September. Together with other Devizes Churches, we made soup on Thursdays during Lent. Thank you to everyone who helps in any way. Jean Green Tuesday Fellowship During the last year average attendance has remained constant. We miss Terry, our pianist, who has moved to Wales. We wish him well. We thank Pauline who has helped with the music by providing CDs. We have listened to some interesting speakers this year, a visit by the Guide Dogs and their owners, a talk by the mayor as well as
some thought-provoking talks by various charities. We have also had fun, a games afternoon, a quiz and tea parties. We have enjoyed flower arrangement demonstrations and craft afternoons. I would like to thank the Committee for their hard work, Mary our birthday secretary, Ann our pastoral secretary, the kitchen crew, and Janine for looking after our finances. The strength of the group is that everyone is very willing to help and support each other. Marie Crook Thursday Coffee Morning Attendance at this varies considerably with no real understanding of why. Special events will create greater footfall. Those attending enjoy the time. We have someone from Sustainable Devizes who focuses on what we can do to live more sustainably and correct misconceptions. Recently, staff from a local funeral director has come to have conversations about how we are prepared for death, both practically and spiritually. As always, more helpers are required to share the load. Trish Lee UFOs Thursday toddler group The group seems to have adapted well to the new times. The session starts at 10:00h, toys are cleared away at 11:30h and those who want to, stay to sit down around tables and lunch together. On average 10 adults and approximately 20 children attend to play and about 5 adults stay for lunch with their little ones. It is not just the childminders who stay for lunch. Apparently, a new parent commented that, despite the number of children in the hall, it seemed calm and the children were all involved in playing and learning. There are several church members who volunteer once a month and a big thanks goes to them. Unfortunately, there are gaps on the rota so if anyone thinks they may be able to help out once a month please let me know. Thanks also to Kath S for the time she puts in to support the group. I know she would love the group to run during school holidays but, unfortunately, this was not possible over Easter due to lack of volunteers. Lastly, thank you to Vici Knott, the childminder who volunteers to run the group on behalf of the church. Rosemary Stevens The “Weekly Link”
This is the newssheet of St Andrew's and of Trinity church, emailed to everyone who has signed up for it. It provides a weekly diary of church events along with regular features: the lectionary for the current Sunday, a prayer and (usually) a “reflection” from that week’s preacher. It can also include a report of a recent activity or an advertisement for one that is coming up; an article regarding a subject of interest or concern; a poem; or perhaps a picture. Contributions in any of these forms are invited. Peter Fanshawe
