## **Section C Objectives and activities**

The purpose of the Charity is to advance the Christian faith in the Area of Benefit in accordance with the principles and practices of the Participating Churches.

In achieving its purpose, the Charity will engage in a range of activities, either on its own or with others, including (but not restricted to):

**Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document**

- a) the celebration of public worship;

- b) the teaching of the Christian faith;

- c) mission and evangelism;

- d) pastoral work, including visiting the sick and the bereaved;

- e) the provision of facilities with a Christian ethos for the local community, including (but not restricted to) the elderly, the young and other groups with special needs; and

- f) the support of other charities in the UK and overseas.

St Andrews Church, Devizes is set up to benefit the public in general. All meetings are free of charge and open to all. Services and facilities are provided to all in the local community who will benefit from them.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The Church's purpose is beneficial through the promotion of individual and family stability and wellbeing and increased ability to contribute positively to society. Pastoral work focuses on visiting the sick and the bereaved.

Groups benefiting from activities and facilities include, but are not restricted to, the elderly, the young and other groups with special needs. The Church seeks to meet the spiritual, mental and physical needs of people in the community. No detriment or harm is expected to result from the church's purpose. The Church seeks to develop and maintain positive relationships with other faith and non-faith groups. Families and individuals will benefit from meeting their spiritual, mental and physical needs. No financial benefits are paid by the Church.

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit when planning activities for the year.

Section D                      Achievements and performance

**Chairperson Summary of the main** We have celebrated the Church Festivals of Advent, Christmas, Lent and **achievements of the charity** Easter, all with themes to help our thoughts through those times. We are **during the year** grateful to those who, through the year, serve in many ways, making us the people of St. Andrew's. Our young people’s work continues with Messy Church being our main focus. Our older people’s work finds its focus in our Tuesday Fellowship. We have said ‘farewell’ to several dearly loved friends either moving away or passing away. Our Thursday Coffee Morning continues as a valued resource where all are welcome; a busy hubbub of conversations and multiple meetings happening all over the building. Our foyer is being rejuvenated to improve the experience of this space. We continue to nurture several people as they grow in confidence in leading worship and communion. **Property Group** Day to day property maintenance has involved: 1) adapting to the loss of our property officer - many people are now learning how to care for the premises. 2) installing smart thermostats to reduce our costs and improve the warmth and welcome. **Lettings of Church Premises** The building is busier than it has ever been with lettings. **Pastoral Secretary** The pastoral team continues to try to serve the folks of St Andrews as best we can. At Easter we delivered palm crosses and chocolate bunnies to those in residential care or unable to get to worship. Gary has also visited members in hospital and care homes. Carol delivers the church flowers each week to various members who are unwell or unable to get to church and these have been gratefully received. As always we need more pastoral contacts as several of are members have no one. However if you know someone who would appreciate a visit or phone call, please let one of the pastoral team know. **Safeguarding** There have been several Creating Safer Spaces training sessions and Advanced courses organised for some people. I did the advanced course in the summer of last year. Though I have been to training sessions many times over the years, I always learn something new each time. I have had one disclosure concerning a young person brought to my attention this year and have responded to that in the prescribed way. We need safeguarding rules to keep our children and vulnerable adults safe and to provide a framework so that we can all have appropriate relationships and maintain respectful boundaries between ourselves. **Thursday Toddlers** We are a strong group with between 15 and 18 adults (male and female) and 30 children most weeks in normal times. The children learn to share and take turns with toys and we encourage them to sit down altogether at snack time.

Section D Achievements and erformance p

## **Messy Church**

We are in contact with about ten families who come along on the afternoon of the second Sunday of the month to explore a Bible story or theme through games, activities, singing and worship. We finish with a hot meal, which gives us a chance for further fellowship. Read about what we have done each month in “The Link”.

## **Tuesday Fellowship**

Tuesday Fellowship meet every Tuesday. We have between 10 and 18 members and welcome Gentlemen. We have some good speakers and excellent weeks when Members talk about different times. Several of us take it in turns to take a short service. Our leader Christine Madigan has been quite poorly, she has served us faithfully for a long time and for this we thank her.

There are some new people on the committee. They are all very valid friends who keep Fellowship going.

We are so grateful for our tea ladies, Vivien Goode and Ann Wilkins. There are others who come to help and we thank them. We always welcome new members and speakers.

## **Choir and Music Group**

St Andrew’s is really blest with many wonderful musicians and singers. This year we gave thanks as a church community to Pauline Hawkins for all her years of leadership leading the choir and playing the organ for services. Her music has been enjoyed and appreciated by many, both in the church and around the town. Pauline continues to play her autoharp with the Music Group and has also joined the team on the sound desk. Music continues to flourish. We now have 2 groups of singers.

- The Church Choir, which meets on the 1[st] and 3[rd] Mondays of the month.

   - We have sopranos, altos and tenors and are on the look out for a bass to join us!

They record hymns for the Mid Week Musical Reflections, lead the singing at services and learn an introit for the service on the 4[th] Sunday of the month.

- The other group is called the Church Singers and meets every Monday with the Music Group. This is very much about singing for pleasure and you do not need to be able to read music to join this group. Both groups welcome new members.

We have 3 talented organists – Ray, Terry and Keith. With Ray also giving guidance to the choir.

The Music Group continues to play for the service on the 4[th] Sunday of the month and continues to rehearse every Monday at 4pm in the church. All musicians are welcome. We are particularly hoping that a cellist might one day join us…!

## **Ladies Evening Group**

The Ladies Evening Group continues to meet twice a month in the Hall on Wednesday evenings. A variety of speakers have entertained us, informed us, and challenged us.

Following the Covid period, we were pleased to meet again but sadly, our numbers are fewer than before. However, we are grateful to our Committee who support and hold it all together. During the last year, Dorothy House has been our charity, and through

our Autumn and Spring sales, we have sent £1300 to them, for which I am truly grateful. A further £500 has been given to the Church towards heating costs.

A highlight for many of us was the visit of Izzey Balmer from Wessex Auctions who spoke about, and valued, small items we had brought along. None of us will become wealthy, but it was so good to hear her speak about so many varied and different objects. Before we finish for the summer, we look forward to our visit to The Goat Farm at Avebury.

Our meetings close over the summer, but we begin again in September, when again we will have a variety of speakers. We will be pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group.

## **Social & Catering (SOCAT)**

The social and catering group have prepared both hot and cold food for various church lunches and funerals during the year. These have been well received and are an opportunity to show care and a warm welcome through hospitality, particularly when asked to provide for particular dietary requirements. The group may need to consider restarting fundraising to maintain church funds to an adequate level.

## **House Group**

This group started in January 2023 and we meet on the 2[nd] Wednesday afternoon of the month at 21 Kempsfield. Between 6 and 8 people are currently coming along.

The group was formed to discuss various issues and questions that face many Christians in the 21[st] century. The meetings have made it possible to voice doubts and uncertainties openly, and to face the challenges of more traditional beliefs. Our discussions are following the ideas put forward in ‘Living the Questions – The Wisdom of Progressive Christianity’ by David Felten and Jeff Procter-Murphy.

## **Prayer Group**

We meet on alternate Mondays at 46 Sarum Drive. Over coffee, we share news of anyone in need of prayer and indeed pray for all church people. We gradually extend our prayers to cover the world and its problems. If you would like us to pray for someone, you know, ring me on 722630 if you wish to join us; you would be very welcome. I am sure you all believe in the power of prayer. Our next meeting is on Monday 5[th] June at 10.30.

## **Premises**

Following Richard Heath’s move, there is a vacancy for a Property Steward. Tony Hams and Dave Pigg are active in getting small works done in church. Another person is needed to share this very important work. We need to keep our premises safe and comfortable. Gary has collated lists of our regular suppliers and tradespeople. Rosemary Stevens is compiling a list of named jobs within church; this is proving a bigger task than expected and will include everything we need to know about how our church building works. The trustees are beginning a general tidy up of the foyer as it gives a first impression of who we are as a church. From there, other spaces will be tackled, for example, the vestry. We have too many chairs and other items, which will be sold.

## **St Andrew’s Traidcraft Store**

Following the closure of the Traidcraft business, there is no longer a store at St Andrew’s church.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

## **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**

Unrestricted (ie General) Funds are used for the day to day running of the Church.

The main reasons for holding general reserves are:

- To ensure that the church always has funds available to pay its way (working capital).

- To protect against unforeseen circumstances – ie loss of income and increased expenditure (eg urgent repairs or replacement of equipment).

- To enable the Church to respond to new opportunities for mission and service.

The target level of reserves is between £30,000 to £40,000: £15,000 to £20,000 for working capital and £15,000 to £20,000 for unforeseen circumstances and opportunities. Actual general reserves at 31 August 2022 were £21,919 (2021: £34,371).

Restricted Funds are utilised for the purposes for which the funds have been set aside. The funds are utilised in a time frame set by the Church Council. Actual restricted reserves at 31 August 2022 were £2,766 (2021: £1,811) to be used mainly for young people’s work.

## **Section F Other optional information**

## **Churches Together in Devizes**

The Church plays an active role as a member of Churches Together in Devizes, being one of eight churches representing a broad range of worship across the town which together focus on four priorities:

- 1) Grow more confident in faith,

- 2) Champion social justice,

- 3) Nurture children and young people and

- 4) Be good stewards of the environment.

## **Wiltshire United Area Methodist/United Reformed**

The Church is part of the Wiltshire United Area Methodist/United Reformed which covers a mixed urban/rural area of Wiltshire and includes the expanding towns of Trowbridge, Warminster, Westbury, Devizes, Calne, Corsham, Bradford-on-Avon and Melksham, together with the surrounding villages of Whitley, Winsley, Bromham, Steeple Ashton, Market Lavington, Monks Chapel, Holt and Hilperton. The Wiltshire United Area is committed to:-

- worshipping God in meaningful ways

- drawing upon the power of prayer

- recognising, receiving and sharing the love of God

- encouraging Church growth in town and village churches

- developing ecumenical links

- reaching out to the wider community

- seeking to meet the needs of all age groups

## **Charities**

The Church supports many charities whose objectives and activities are in line with those of the Church. In addition to raising funds for specific charities (eg Christian Aid) the Church is committed to supporting from its own funds three charities for a period of three years – The Devizes & District foodbank (a local charity), Carer Support Wiltshire (a national charity) and The Turning Point Trust (an international charity).

## **Section G                    Declaration**
