Chairman’s Report 2021
2021 was another challenging year for HIWCIO. We continued to offer bridge on-line (started in 2020). Although we hoped to restart face-to-face (F2F) competitions, successive waves of covid variants and Government guidance prevented us from running any F2F events.
However, we were able to run our major event of the year; the Hampshire Congress was held online over the weekend of 13[th] and 14[th] March. The event was well attended with 80 pairs and 36 teams taking part.
We were also able to run many of our usual events on-line; often with better attendance than we would expect at Romsey. The weekly pairs events, started in 2020, continued until May; but falling attendance led to us only running these on an occasional basis thereafter.
The County Leagues and Knock-out competitions were also run on-line: the league increasing to three divisions. Our charity simultaneous events continued on-line, with a total of £714 being raised for the local air ambulance.
As ever I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the committee for their efforts throughout the difficult last 12 months. Special mentions for Tim Smith our webmaster, Roger Johnson for auditing our accounts, and our shareholders for representing us at EBU meetings.
We intend to try and play some F2F bridge in 2022, so I hope to see you at a County Event soon!
