A huge Thank You to our sponsors and Funders
A message from the chair - cliff evans
I’ve been a Trustee of DOCA since 2014, and became chair of Trustees last year when Kelvin Nash stepped down from the role. The contribution he made to DOCA over the 16 years he was involved was immense, and for that I, and the other Trustees, are extremely grateful.
Over the past 12 months our team of Trustees, Staff, and Festival Makers have worked extremely hard together to deliver high-quality events such as the Street Festival, Carnival, Confetti Battle, and Lantern Parade. As a result we’ve been delighted to see the crowds returning, and giving glowing feedback on the magical experiences we’ve given them.
We’ve also been busy exploring new, innovative strategies to ensure the organisation’s future stability and growth. A key part of that has been to take over the lease for Parnella House in the Devizes Market Place.
None of this has been, or will continue to be possible without the hard work of our incredible team of staff, Festival Makers and partners, plus the generous support of our funders, sponsors, advertisers and the public at large. My heartfelt thanks therefore go to everyone involved in making DOCA what it is today, and in helping to shape what promises to be a very exciting year ahead.
With very best wishes
Cliff Evans

the TEAM - Hello and welcome
Sam Drury Shore
Resources Manager & Green Champion
Sam moved to Devizes during the pandemic and has already immersed herself into the local community through volunteering with a range of organisations.
She has extensive project management experience across many industries including publishing, ecommerce, letterpress printing, and home interiors. She is passionate about sustainability and spreadsheets and is a perfect addition to the team.
Helen Pritchard - Trustee (Secretary)
We are delighted to welcome Helen to our Board of Trustees. She has lived just outside Devizes since 2013 and retired in 2023 having been a project manager in the Ministry of Defence for the past ten years, and before that a policy adviser in the Department for Transport for more years than she can remember. She has acted in the Wharf theatre’s pantomime for the past six years and directs the village panto in Potterne each February.
Peter Corbet - Trustee
Peter is a free lance Project Manager having worked in the Far East, Middle East and Europe for several international businesses such as BT, Toys R Us, Swiss Air, Mens Wearhouse, M&S and Alexandra in Operational and Commercial roles. These skills will be invaluable to DOCA as we move forward.
An ex mayor of Devizes, he is a town councillor and has lived in Devizes with his wife Chris and four children for over 35 years so is well connected with our communities. 2
the team - Thank you and goodbye
Ashley peevor - artistic director
Ashley Peevor moves on after a short but impactful period at the helm. He bought in a big chunk of funding boosting our online profile from Google. He was a great hands on presence within the team, his artistic flare shone through. Ashley ran a year of fantastic events. We wish him huge success in his next adventure.
Liz Lavender Development and Event Support
Goodbye and thank you to Liz who left the team after joining in 2019 in a Development and Event Support.
We are particularly grateful to Liz for her work implementing the Accessible Route to the Colour Rush event, and for her work improving our evaluation methodology.
Liz was a dab hand at persuading local businesses to donate food and equipment to the cause and making sure absolutely everyone got involved.
A final farewell
Keith Rayner sadly passed on 30 January, he was a valued volunteer and quietly took on any role that needed filling. He was a regular puppet operator in the Woolly Mammoth and the Dinosaur which still wears his shoes. He was a kind and gentle man who was always ready to help others.
The are eternally grateful for the generous contribution that Keith made to making Devizes a special place.

The festival inhabited the Green and the Town cente offering two totally different environments to enjoy a feast of shows, food, music and more.
4 TA 3
~. The Green hosted a Willow Sanctuary which was built by artist Sarah Jayne Edwards. She ran a community willow « ~ build which saw 17 participants give 240 hours to create the structure. The Cathedral acted as a seating area and stage throughout the day for talks, music and poetry.
It remained in place for two days and was taken over by Devizes Public Living Room (part of national Camarados network) who held a picnic for their members. After the festival elements of the Cathedral were recycled, either given to local schools to be used by children in their outdoor spaces or used for lanterns in the Winter Lantern Parade.
On the Big Green on the Saturday Above and Beyond errected their Flying Trapeze Rig and gave people the chance to ‘have a go’ at flying. We pay our respects to the legendary Mike Wright who led the troupe well into his 70's and sadly passed away in 2024. .° .e,

What is Without Walls? xX ). Consortium
Wild by Motion House
Without Walls is a pioneer and trailblazer of exceptional outdoor art. By forging and spearheading a network of cultural organisations, and festivals, they work in partnership to commission, co-create, and share outdoor work with communities across the country and ensure onward touring nationally and internationally.
DOCA was lucky enough to become a member of the Touring Network Partnership. This enabled us to pay a membership to Without Walls and access some of our shows at a hugely discounted fee. We benefit from promotion through the partnership and training for our team. We attend regular meetings and contribute to conversations in the wider sector, working with some of the UK’s largest festivals who share best practice, offer co-commissioning opportunities and more.
The ‘Makery’ appeared both days, hosting 50 local makers who offered beautiful hand made goodies for sale, supporting local artists and businesses.
We were treated to an International food court, hosting 40 vendors who were selected for the quality and sustainability of their e ° delicious food offerings.
Every contribution from a local business, trader or individual makes a huge difference, the e Street Festival is our most complex event and it takes many hands to make it work. We are e grateful to all those who quietly donate equipment like Devizes Trailers who make it possible to move large amounts of equipment around the town for the weekend. Drivers who collect performers from airports and companies like Gaiger who step in with strange requests like the
need for lots of short scaffold tubes so we could put our flags up. Never think you have nothing to contribute, you’d be amazed what it takes to make a festival happen.

After trialling the Carnival on an earlier date and seeing no real change to the levels of participation, along with a lot of local objection, we conducted a consultation session in the Town Hall inviting local people to have an open discussion about the Carnival date. This resulted in the decision to move Carnival back to a later date in our Festival season.
Young Farmers joined in the action and loaned us a trailer which we decorated in our workshops and carried those with mobility issues through the parade.
John Stevens, Devizes Mayor,
“I think the standard of entry was great and I appreciate the amount of work Thanks that went into making the floats and walking entries, which made it so to the difficult to judge. Judges
Helen Langford, Sustainable Devizes,
“It was great to see a brilliant range of entries at this year’s Carnival, with so much creativity and effort put into making it a fantastic event for our community.

The Big Carnival Build enabled people to drop in to a big space at the Wharf Theatre, and build elements for carnival with support and access to materials, many of which were sourced from the Wiltshire Scrap store.
Four largescale pieces were made during twelve sessions, which were carried by local families during the parade. Five artists were on hand to help participants and 13 volunteers made the sessions possible, through 52 hours of volunteering.
These workshops were supported by funding from the Postcode Local Trust, helping us to create participatory opportunities for our communities.
Fringe Events
Our fringe events are an important part of our offer. They are often the ideas of our Festival Makers who decide how the events are delivered.
They generate income and they connect with wider non-arts audiences in the heart of our communities.

- We estimate 1000 people were throwing confetti with spectators swelling the crowd by many more thousands.
For many years we have been borrowing a huge Confetti Cannon from our sponsor Confetti Magic in Luton. Volunteers would collect and return the huge machine which would only fit in quite large vehicles.
This year was different...
We are hugely grateful to the very talented Roger Short and Nick Amer for building us a shiny new Confetti Blower. It is equally as powerful of the ones we’ve borrowed in previous years. We now have it safely stored to use for the future. This is a great asset for DOCA, reducing costs and resources which will help secure the future of the event itself.
Jennings have been part of Confetti Battle since its inception in 1955 and as always we were happy to welcome them to the event with a fantastic array of rides for all ages.
76 Volunteers looked after 402 participants, 12 of which used our accessible route
The Colour Rush has become an established part of the Summer events calendar in Devizes. It adds an amazing element of chaos and colour to the Confetti Battle which follows on directly after the finish of the race.
Entry fees take it to somewhere near a cost neutral event and even contribute towards the cost of the Confetti Battle. We had the highest number of runners for the main 5k run this year, participants in the accessible route were up. Entry fees raised a gross of £5,722.
We are very grateful to the Wiltshire FA for the use of their grounds and main building, this has meant we have been able to reduce the infrastructure needed to put on the event, removing the need to hire toilets and providing a place to store equipment while we rally volunteers to move things around.
Colour Rush and Confetti Battle are events that require the most volunteers mostly because of health and safety and the introduction of the accessible route. These two events combined have the largest footprint of all our events, they are the messiest too. Not many volunteers want a barrel of powder paint in their car.
The clear up afterwards is a huge effort, and though we bring in professional help, there is always confetti that is carried away by participants and spread far and wide. We appreciate the patience of local communities who may experience some temporary additional colour in their gardens after the events.

This year saw two local artists commissioned to make 2 large scale lanterns, and the completion of a the rebuild of one of our old white horses by Karoline Pike a talented local lantern maker. It is now resplendent with tassels around his ankles and can pack down for storage.
Fantasy Radio are back on board treating audiences to festive tunes along with live commentary on air for those who can’t attend in person for one reason or another.
Window Wanderland again had some spectacular entries from both residential homes and businesses, illuminating windows of all sizes all round the Town.
This creates a great incentive to get people to collaborate creatively and to get out walking to explore their neighbourhood.
Funded by Devizes Area Board and Arts Council England, DOCA collaborated with P F Events to create a technical video mapping course, which we offered to five 16 to 20 year olds giving access to free training in video editing.
DOCA initially reached out to organisations and groups that work with and support young . : people who don’t benefit from mainstream education, or those with SEND, to see whether they could suggest anybody who may enjoy and benefit from a technical course. After approaching these organisations, and working with the people who were interested, we opened applications to anyone in the local area who would benefit from the course.
The course culminated with a projection onto the iconic Shambles building in Devizes Market Place as part of DOCA’s 2023 Winter Festival, so the whole town could enjoy the incredible show the students created.
the image right shows a tech rehearsal before the big event. All of the content was created and developed by the students, including the use of AI. The course director was impressed by the novel and creative ideas the young people expressed in their work, especially in the use of AI

Once again the Stealth team bought an amazing array of beers and ciders to tickle the taste buds, and great sounds to delight the ears of our audiences
Pieminster donated hundreds of pies to line hungry tummies through their ‘Little Acts of Pieness’ scheme.
Manos Puestas blend flamenco guitar, think Latin, gypsy jazz improvisation, and West African high life to create a laid-back cocktail feel
Fraser Tilley combines his own material with iconic soul and jazz tracks in their purest form, all stripped back to their basic acoustic roots.
Able Mable (aka Hazel Anderson) has been winning over audiences internationally for many years. She has a flair for the dramatic and the ridiculous. Her warm humour and interaction with our audiences was perfect for this event.
355 people attended The Festival of Winter Ales from all over the South of the UK
Thanks to all those who donated raffle prizes and bought tickets, we raise £734!
SUSTAINABILITY
PLAN
We all have a role to play in working towards a lower carbon future, with this in mind Samantha Drury Shore, DOCA’s Green Champion has created a new Sustainability Plan.
We are committed to doing what we can to bring about positive change, so Sam has looked at the ways in which we can improve the delivery of our events to lower their impact on the environment.
We have identified a number of areas where we think we can do better, or have a positive impact these include:
-
Energy - looking at cleaner supplies and plugging in rather than using generators.
-
Transport - clear information about public transport and lift sharing.
-
Food and Food waste - sourcing local, climate foot-printing, collaboration
-
Biodiversity and nature - how will we develop and use our green space
-
Resources and waste - procurement, waste sorting, drinks packaging, food serveware, printed materials, t-shirts,
-
Messaging - utilising our potential for influencing and inspiring others
-
Collaboration - sharing resources and knowledge with our community and our sector
-
Artists and Performers - encouraging the use of Green Riders
-
Digital storage - carbon assessment for our website and reduction of our inbox and cloud storage
-
Community resilience - playing a positive role in our community to help with the uncertainty of the future. We will support and collaborate with organisations looking to make positive change. ye “e
