A message from the Chair
“Over the 16 years, initially as a member of Devizes Carnival Committee, then a trustee of DOCA and later Chair of Trustees, I have seen a truly amazing transition in our events scene, brought about by so many talented people, culminating in what we see today… a brilliant cultural arts offer right here in Devizes, that punches well over its weight, and is the envy of many a town!
But now it is time for me to pass on the baton to a very safe pair of hands, and I wish Cliff and his team of trustees, staff and festival makers all the very best for the future.” - Kelvin Nash
A big thanks from DOCA...
Many of you may know Kelvin, as he is a very active member of the community, involved with many organisations as well as the Council. He has given thousands of hours to planning and delivering our events and has done everything from creating maps, organising road closures, building lanterns, putting out signage late at night and very early in the morning. He’s volunteered in almost all roles and been an enthusiastic and pro-active chair. He has been open minded and flexible and always the calm voice of reason. We owe him a huge THANK YOU! We wish him well and hope he enjoys his new free time which we know he’ll fill immediately.

We continue our work with our new chair, Cliff Evans at the helm. Cliff has been an active board member of DOCA for many years, and is another incredibly active person who is involved with a number of other community organisations in the area. He has been an enthusiastic volunteer along with his wife Jane giving him a good overview of how things work on the ground at our events. We look forward to working with Cliff in his new role.

Loz Samuels Artistic Director - moves on
“I’ve felt privileged to work in Devizes with DOCA since 2016. Six years on, I’ve decided to chase my creative dreams and develop my own arts practice by going back to college.
Working for DOCA has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The Trustees have been adventurous and supportive, the volunteers have been dedicated and hard-working and many have become good friends. Devizes is a great environment to programme events, with enthusiastic audiences keen to see new work.
We have been lucky to be supported by Arts Council and many other funders throughout my time, which has enabled us to bring some amazing artists to delight our audiences.
I’m not sure the people of Devizes quite understand how extraordinary it is to have this kind of activity in such a small town, a cultural offer the envy of many large cities.
It has been hard work, but I’ve met the most amazing people who have touched my life in so many positive ways. I’m sure DOCA will continue to thrive. I’m happy to have left the organisation in good shape with a great team poised to take over.” - Loz Samuels

Everyone at DOCA would like to say a huge thank you to Geoff Whiting, who sadly hung up his high viz for good this year.
Geoff was a long standing volunteer with many years of dedicated service. He was always the first on site and very often one of the last to leave. He took on the many jobs that others didn’t want to do. Fondly known as ‘Roadblock Geoff’, he could always be relied upon to keep our road closures secure no matter how difficult it got. Geoff always had a smile on his face and was literally up for anything.
He continued to volunteer despite ill health and later mobility issues.
He will be greatly missed.

Meet the new Team
It’s very exciting to take on a bright new team who have energy and experience that will take DOCA forward into the next season. Taking on such a large and complex set of events is challenging but we are confident that we have made a good choice and they will take DOCA onto the next level, as a Nationally recognised arts organisation programming exceptional work with our communities at the core of our offer.
Ashley Peevor - Incoming Artistic Director
Ashley currently lives in Bristol with his family. He knows Devizes and many of our volunteers as he was part of the creative team who created the Ceres show and delivered community workshops in the build up and created some of the costumes. Ashley is an accomplished artist whose work has appeared at many festivals Internationally and in the UK . He has worked with Circomedia and has expertise in Marketing and fundraising. Ashley has great ideas and a huge network of exciting artists to bring to Devizes.

‘Belle’ is excited about working in her home town and DOCA is delighted to have someone with such experience on home turf. She has years of event experience working on just about all the big Green Field festivals you can think of. She is passionate about working with communities and has worked in a freelance role for local organisations.
Ru Brooks - Event and Business Coordinator.
Ru is a digital ninja, he’ll be updating our website and keeping our social media vibrant and active. Super efficient and organised he’ll be managing markets, coordinating workshops and overseeing all our marketing. Ru has worked with many event companies around the South west and currently lives in Bristol.

Our Impact
We raised £77,880 from stalls and fairground concessions, ticket sales, and donations (£60,040 Street Festival and Fringe events, £8,840 Winter Festival) with Devizes Town Council contributing, £15,800 Devizes Area Board £990 and The Post Code Lottery £2550. This money helps us lever in funding from organisations like Arts Council England
Arts Council England invested £101,751 (£87,979 summer) and (£16,772 Winter into our year round programme. With a further £82833 invested through the ‘Ceres’ project delivered in partnership with Bassline Circus and Full Tilt Aerial.
We secured £23101 from the postcode Local Trust to help us deliver a program of workshops over the 2022 and 2023. This funding enabled us to broaden our participation for Carnival and Lantern Parade connecting with our communities and putting them at the heart of our events.
We employed 235 artists and technicians, worked with 5411 participants, through creative workshops or volunteering and delighted 28,765 audience members. That’s 34,361 people along with countless passers by, friends, relatives and businesses that experienced a positive impact from our work.

We took the decision to hold Street Festival in May. This was to relieve the pressure from the Summer schedule by spreading our events more evenly. We hoped more local people would get to visit this amazing event as they are less likely to be on holiday. We also hoped to attract more much needed volunteers to help us. The date change meant we didn’t clash with Edinburgh Festival so we had more choice of performers.
The Street Festival became the launch of the Summer. Our first ‘normal’ year after the pandemic. ‘International’ was back in the title and European performers returned to our streets. We had great weather and appreciative audiences, though we know like the national trend, we had less people than in pre-pandemic years. .

Accommodating our finale ‘Ceres’ show meant a new layout for the Festival with our stage moving into the main Market Place in front of Lloyds Bank.
We spread shows from the Market Place to the Town Hall, giving breathing space, and brought people back into the Market Place each evening for the finale.
We expanded our seating and eating area’s. Hosted bands in the Market Place and other performers in the Brittox and St. John Street so avoid sound clashes.

17 technicians & 22 artists worked on this show 53 people attended 10 workshops 5000 people watched in wonder
This flagship show was funded by Arts Council England, with help from the Devizes Area Board. It enabled us to deliver deliver a program of community workshops which contributed to the making of the spectacular show ‘Ceres’, the finale to the Street Festival on both nights.
A tale of women, trade and justice, coloured with influences from ancient rituals and tradition, which gave the local folk legend Ruth Peirce a chance to have her say. The concept of A/D Loz Samuels, it was over two years in the making. DOCA worked with Bassline Circus and Full Tilt Aerial to commission the telling of the story of the local woman whose disgraced name appears on the Market Cross in Devizes.

Workshops for all ages were led by expert makers combining the teaching of traditional crafts techniques with contemporary design sensibility.
We also offered movement and performance workshops, opportunities for young people to shadow technicians and volunteer opportunities to be involved with setting up the show, giving a valuable opportunity to work with industry professionals. Workshop participants joined in the action at the beginning of the show.

The after effects of Covid were still felt widely. This affected our artists, with one band cancelling due to infection at the last minute. This meant we had an unexpected double set from Mozzle Brocha.
Along side them appeared Otto and the Mutapa Calling and Trevor ‘BabaJack’ Steger, with Rose Popay doing naughty (and nice) portraits.
Volunteer numbers were also still unpredictable making planning a challenge. Audiences came out in droves, enjoying the sunshine and the safe space the Hillworth Park offers.

POWER is a solo circus-theatre work that celebrates the ways we can feel powerful, even in an uncertain world. Charmaine Childs bought her optimistic, uplifting, funny, highly physical and moving one woman show to St. Andrews Church.
She threw Revd. Gary Gotham over her shoulder and stole the hearts of the audience who filled the church to capacity.
Fundraising Quiz
The Festival or Carnival Quiz has been a long standing tradition. Run exclusively by our Festival Makers it has appeared in many venues helping to raise much needed funds.
This year The Shambles Covered Market was the venue for the evening. This meant the venue hire came out of our annual allocation from Devizes Town Council increasing our income. Quiz master Don Jones did an excellent job of quiz mastering as ever.
The quiz was sold out and raised £692 from tickets and bar sales
As an organisation we continually respond to the needs of the community and in line with the requests from schools to have Carnival during term time to make it easier for them to participate we went with a July date. We were rewarded with sunshine and very large crowds thought the response to the date change from our audiences was mixed. We collaborated with the Street Band festival in Taunton which enabled us to bring ‘La Tromba’ a genuine Brazilian band to the event.
We commissioned ‘And Now’ Productions to create an Ark to lead the carnival, and offered two workshops to local people to make birds and fish to follow it during the parade. The Ark carried messages and drawings from local children outlining all the things they believe are precious in the world and would like to keep safe.

Colour Rush continues to be a popular addition to the Confetti Battle, adding to the Colour and sense of excitement. The event brings a different audience, is a great way for individuals families to be involved together and is suitable for anyone with any level of fitness.
Colour Rush also brings in funds to support the running of Confetti Battle this year bought £5265 towards the cost of both events. Wiltshire Football Association are a valuable partner allowing us to use their grounds for our starting point.
The number of volunteers needed to run the event continues to be a challenge but somehow we always just have enough.

Confetti Battle like our other events followed the National trend with smaller audiences than we saw pre-pandemic. CCTV estimated 3500 in the crowd and around 1000 throwing confetti.
Jennings Fair filled the Market Place with light and sound and the Golden Ticket returned to the confetti bags encouraging people to buy confetti from us rather than bringing their own.
This helps us to reduce the amount of foil and non bio-degradable confetti bought onto the site.
Clean up was ably supported by Grist Environmental with leaf blowers loaned by Devizes Town Council.
Confetti Magic once again loaned us a stadium sized confetti blower and donated a substantial amount of confetti to fill the air.

The Winter Festival is a magical event, made possible by a partnership with Devizes Town Council, and supported by local organisations such as St. Johns Church, Wiltshire Museums, Devizes Town Band, Local Schools and many residents who join the parade.
We deliver materials to schools to enable them to create their lanterns for the Friday night parade, the cost is subsidised by Arts Council Funding. We sold kits at town centre outlets and did free open workshops at the Wiltshire Museum supporting those who want to bring their own ideas to life.
Window Wanderland ran for four days, inviting local people to explore their town to see the creative efforts of the 52 residents and business that decorated their windows.

Polar by The Art of Being Nowhere
For two days, ’The Makery’ held in the Corn Exchange was filled with local makers selling hand made craft items and the Market Place hosted a festive market with bars, encouraging people to buy hand made and local presents for Christmas. Devizes Town Band played Festive tunes during the parade. The Shambles hosted community made hearts which remained in place until after Christmas.
The Winter Festival saw crowds flock to explore the streets which were full of light installations including; the Bell Orchestra by Beautiful Creatures, Jabberwocky by Trans Mutation, the Projector Bikes by Dan Fox, Celestial Sound Cloud by Pif-Paf and Polar by The Art of Being Nowhere. Many of these are interactive pieces and Polar had accompanying workshops for families to join the following day.
Young Farmers joined us with decorated tractors processing with hundreds of families, local organisations and school children, who parade their beautifully made lanterns through the streets.

Award winning singer-song writer Jamie R Hawkins, and Dr Zebos Wheezy Club entertained our crowds as they drank, along with cabaret performer Darryl Carrington giving that all important DOCA flavour making things a little different to your average Ales Festival.
We worked with our long term partner Stealth Brew Co. who ably curated the pints and the pulling of them.
Pieminster generously sponsored us again through their ‘Little Acts of Pieness’ scheme, helping us to maximise our income and raise more for future events.
