Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes

Chairman’s Report on behalf of the Trustees

Charity Commission Annual Report 2024

Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes is a small but prideful Charity that provide an emergency out-of-hours service to our local NHS partners in Nottinghamshire, and do a brilliant job of it. We pride ourselves on being a professional service with well trained volunteers, and a high-class fleet of bikes and cars.

Our 2023-2024 year was a year of growth. We focused on our main charitable objectives of relieving sickness and protecting the health of those in Nottinghamshire by seeking out new surgeries to service and increasing the types of products that we can transport for the NHS, for free.

The NHS know that when they call, we will answer, and when we accept a job, we will deliver it. In August 2024 we made the decision to return to an out-of-hours emergency service after a successful trial of operating at 24 hours. We found that operating as a 24 hour service took a toll on our volunteers’ mental and physical wellbeing, and after consulting with our supportive NHS partners we returned to the out-of-hours service on which our Charity began. We were able to move nearly all of our pre-planned work to our new operational hours, and ensure the longevity of our amazing volunteers and their wellbeing.

In the year we bought our first ex-ambulance Skoda vehicle to join our fleet of KIA Sportage, BMW RT1200’s and FJR’s. We continued to work with local businesses to source funding to build our fleet, and took advantage of Crown Commercial Service contract and purchase a KIA Sportage at a heavily reduced cost. We were particularly proud to see our ‘mini fleet’ of toy Blood Bikes grow, which are always eye-catching at our fundraising events.

We were so pleased to have the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Carole McCulloch intending to present at our Annual General Meeting, though she unfortunately could not attend at the last minute. We were fortunate to be chosen as the Lord Mayor’s Charity of the Year and a built a fantastic with the Lord Mayor and her team. In addition to this, we were able to engage with the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey team and take part in their community programme across the season.

In our efforts to raise our profile in Nottinghamshire and engage with local businesses, we joined up with a local Nottingham clothing company to offer our volunteers our own online shop to purchase branded clothing directly from the supplier, which came heavily requested from our volunteers.

Outside of serving the NHS with our emergency transport service, we were able to use our bikes to honour the memory of those that we lost in Nottingham. We were honoured to name a bike in memory of SGT Graham Saville, a police officer who lost his life. We honoured Grace O’Malley-Kumar, a student who lost her life in the Nottingham attacks, and joined her family for a Ride of Remembrance.

Our volunteers are the true unsung heroes who gave up their time to support our objectives whether they are bike riders, car drivers, fundraisers, phone controllers or donating their time to build our IT systems or train new volunteers. I am always blown away by the commitment from our volunteers and on behalf of all of the trustees, I would like to thank our volunteers for keeping us going.

On behalf of all of the trustees, I would like to thank every member of the public who comes over to us when we are fundraising at their local shop, who take the time to ask about what we do, and those who donate to us. Thank you to our generous grantmakers and local businesses and charitable groups who have donated to us. Your donations keep our fleet fuelled and on the road, and because of you we are able to support our local NHS.
