Chairmans report on behalf of the Trustees
What a year that was. As a charity, Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes reached a major milestone in 2023 as we celebrated saving the NHS over £1 million since we started delivering jobs. To celebrate, we held an event at the Motorpoint Ice Arena attended by our volunteers and their families, contacts of Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes and staff from surgeries and hospitals that we service.
At our AGM we were delighted to be joined by Gillian Weaver MBE from Hearts Milk Bank. She gave a wonderful presentation on the history of the milk bank and an overview of what happens with the donated milk to remind us how invaluable our work is in the chain of breast milk from donor mothers to end recipients.
The year witnessed a continuing upward demand for our services by the NHS with more surgeries being on boarded. Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes have continued to offer a 24 hour service for 365 days a year. However, we were requested to temporarily cease collecting plasma for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance at RAF Waddington in July. The service may return next year but at the time of writing we have been given no definitive date.
We have continued to work with local businesses to source funding to build our fleet further and keep a reserve fund. To this end, we have taken advantage of Crown Commercial Service contract and purchased a KIA Sportage at a heavily reduced cost. At the end of our financial year our fleet comprised of 8 motorbikes and 5 cars. During the upcoming year we will be further reviewing our fleet with the view to upgrade to more modern vehicles which will have the added benefit of minimising maintenance costs, increasing reliability and enabling NBB to further increase our workload.
The Riders and Drivers for Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes continue to be an amazing team of people who turn out come rain or shine to ensure that we have cover to perform our pre-planned jobs and the many ad hoc requests we receive every day, ensuring that NHS patients receive the best care possible. They should be immensely proud of their contributions and on behalf of the trustees, I would like to thank them for their continued support of the charity.
Our telephone controllers and fundraisers should not be forgotten either. Our controllers really are the unseen heroes and without them our charity would simply not be able to operate as they are the first point of contact between NBB and the NHS. Our fundraisers really have worked their magic this year, raising around £34,000 through various events and talks – which is an amazing number! Again, a huge thankyou from myself and the Trustees.
Finally, thank you to all the members, supporters and sponsors who continue to contribute to our success.
John McFadden, Chairman, On behalf of the trustees of Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes
