Dunston Commun
Centre - Trustees, Re
ort 2024
The object of Dunston Communty Centre CIO is
. to promote the benefrt of the inhabitants of Dunston and the surrounding area without dislinGtion of
sex or politi￿1, religion, disability, sexual orientation or other opinions by associating the local
authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitsnts in a Common effort to advance educats'on and to
provide facilities in th8 interests of social welfar8 for recreation and leisure time occupation with the
object of improving the conditions of lrfe for the said inhabitants: and to manage and maintain Dunston
Community Centre or to CO-operal8 Wlth any local statutory authority, in the maintenance and
management of. Dunston Comrnunty centre for activities. promoted by the association and its
Constituent bodies in furtherance of the above purpose.,
Dunston Community Centre has weathered the challenges posed by Covid and Lockdowns. It has
been a year both of r8sili8nce and growth. solidifyfj'ng our financial stability and 8mbarking upon new
a¢tiviti8s designed to fulfil our mission of offering Opportunities to lh8 local community to live happier,
healthiér and more fulfilled lives. Whilst we have sadly lost some 9roups over the year, our toddler
groups remain well-attended and we have greatly expanded the Ladies, Tuesday Aftèmoon Socials
which now not only offer a wann space but also a tasty, nutritious meal plus a programme of coach
excursions to a variety of destinations including a pantrjmime and a Christmas Dinner, and Guitsrs for
Geezers so, overall, our footfall has increased.
We've been delighted too, lo be able to continue to work in partnership with other organisations to
deliv8r projects that have positive benefits for local people such as diabetes prevention and post-
diagnostic care for instance. We value our partnership with Homecare North East and were very
grateful for their kind donation of a defibrillator for public use which is now located in our entrance. Blg
thanks too, to ma￿ Nakeeb as our pathership with Treats by the Tyne continues to give us
administrative help as well as aC￿sS to delicious sandwiches, cakes and pastries. And, working with
local councillors and MP we ran workshop sessions on benefits available for pensioners after the
withdrawal of the Wlnt8r Fuel Allowance.
Finally, none of these positive benefits could have b88n achieved without the help and support of our
many volunteers- Val, Mary and Jill in particular. It was sad to see our most stalwart volunteer, Betty
Lamb - auntie Bety to three gene￿tiOnS of local people - finally hang up her pinny after 50 years of
volunteering and working at the Centre, during which she has raised thousands of pounds. Ev8n this
year. fairs and coffee momings or9anised by Betty raised £10000.
Once again, Trustees are confident that Dunston Communlty Centre has delivered accessible 8Ctlvltles
and opportunltles whlch enrlch the lives of the local individuals and families
Governanc8 has proved as effective as always. Trustees have reviewed all policies, updating where
required and have received Safeguarding training. Regular meetings hav8 been resumed, and the
Chair, Treasurer and Secretary meet weekly to discuss issu8S.
