TRUSTEE REPORT 24-25

PUPPETRY.THEATRE.WORKSHOPS.TRAINING.

Creating and delivering innovative theatre experience for audiences and participants of all ages and abilities

OBJECTIVES

CONTINUING THE DINOSAUR TRAIL

This was the year of MRS MANTELL’s TOOTH. Originally set to open at the end of May at the White Rock Theatre the performance was pushed to the end of June with the Lantern Magic ACTION! workshop rescheduled for a month later in August at The White Rock. The extensive rehearsal period took the best part of two months with Samuel Dutton putting in direction and with the extra days of rehearsal both the show and the workshop were well received. However, the publicity package required more and a trailer. A review with a spread of photos appeared in the OBSERVER and SUSSEX WORLD in August and a full throttle publicity offensive went ahead in the Autumn.

K IN G OVERVIEW

Julia Dunbar McLean as artistic company leader and Heather Leech as co-ordinator performer and educator, provided core stability with admin and programme design this year. Heather took the acting role of MARY ANN MANTELL as well as being a puppeteer and maker. Keith Leech took the role of Gideon Mantell and other characters in MRS MANTELL’S TOOTH. Technical help came from Josh Jupp onlights and Julian Rumball on sound both longstanding members of the Rotto team. Photography and filming were important for our record and evaluations. Keith Leech did some video making and editing as did Anna Helena McLean and Clive Tagg. Clive did another great session photographing the MRS MANTELL rehearsals and in December creating a promo for publicity.

SCHEDULE 24/25

Julia worked on a new script to feature, puppets, Victorian toy Theatre and Magic Lantern sequences titled: MRS MANTELL'S TOOTH planned to open in June 2024.

This tells the story of the couple that originally discovered and named the iguanodon - the second dinosaur to be formally identified. It focuses on Gideon Mantell, a Lewes man, who worked tirelessly both as a doctor and as geologist and palaeontologist in the early days of the development of both of the latter sciences, construing from diverse bones the shape of these impressive creatures. We worked to raise funds to bring this to fruition and have been successful in attracting the attention of THE CURRY FUND. This will be paid on completion of certain conditions: the printing of an educational pamphlet and the construction of a full size iguanodon skeleton, planned for June 2024.

ETHOS STRATEGY & POLICIES

Our charitable aim remains to deliver work with our local community in mind. Generally we continue to aspire to provide a service for people of all ages and ability using puppetry as a

tool for expression and healing. The ethos is to disseminate enjoyment for the wider general public through artistic practice in tune with contemporary thinking.

Our interest in the age of the dinosaurs that we are illustrating through the current raft of shows and sessions has importance in at this time - the 200[th] anniversary of the first dinosaur to be discovered and formally recognised - as it happens in Sussex!

We are eternally grateful to our trustees for their time taken in following our business. A special thanks to our Chair Dan Scott and Pat Scott who have overseen important protocol in the past on our behalf. We look forward to holding face to face meetings in the forthcoming period and dealing with the business involved in running the Charity. The Trustees are swearing Cindy Oswin in as a new additional trustee.
