TRUSTEES’ REPORT Continued…
Achievements and past developments and activities
Clic Sargent support in North West Wales - Continued support for events to bring families together (like the christmas pantomimes which Gafael Llaw have previously funded) and provide equipment where needed in the home.
The oncology cubicle ’s outdoor area (unofficially known as Riley's Garden ) – funding work on a new outdoor area and walkout to this space to benefit children staying in the cubicle. Talks are ongoing with Ysbyty Gwynedd Estates.
The Children’s Ward and theatre area redecoration – following successful specialist cancer treatment at Alder Hey, children are then transferred to the Children’s Ward in Ysybty Gwynedd. A local artist carried out a ‘Gafael Llaw’ inspired project working with patients and their families to brighten up the clinical corridors and make the daunting surgical environment more child friendly.
Outdoor play area – the outdoor play area at Ysbyty Gwynedd was condemned which meant that the children could see the area but were not allowed to play. Gafael Llaw worked with hospital staff and also local contractors to rectify the situation and install brand new play area & equipment.
Children's toilets – this is an area identified where the charity have worked with local contractors to construct new children’s toilets at the Children’s Ward, Ysbyty Gwynedd.
The oncology assessment area - the former oncology cubicle, known as cubicle 8, was being used for assessing children with cancer. The cubicle is not inviting or homely and work was carried out to redecorate the cubicle and also the en-suite facilities.
Parents' room – the Board identified the need to fund blinds and other items to make the parents’ room a more homely space.
Future plans and developments
The Board have identified the following areas as continuing priorities for the future:
Complementary therapies - a programme of complementary therapies including massage for children and their families is not currently provided at Ysbyty Gwynedd because of a lack of funding. The Board of Trustees feel that this is something that could be made available through the resident therapist on the Alaw Unit which currently is funded entirely by donations through Awyr Las.
Paediatric oncology training – the Board have identified the need to fund Paediatric Oncology training for two nurses to support staff on Ward Dewi.

Sensory Room at Ysbyty Gwynedd - facilities provide children and their families with an opportunity to play and relieve their stress in a safe, engaging environment. Research has shown that sensory play can benefit nearly all children who are hospitalised, from youngsters who can play independently to those who a full rehabilitation need programme. Such programmes can include physiotherapy and speech and language therapy to re-learn cognitive, motor, language and daily living skills.
Reserves Policy
The Board’s policy is to distribute funds as soon as practicable after receipt and keep balances on reserves at a minimum.
