_The Radlett Festival of Music Registered Charity 1155671_ **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] DECEMBER 2023** ## **REFERENCE & ADMINISTRATION INFORMATION** The Radlett Festival of Music is a charitable incorporation organisation, with charity registration number 1155617. The Principal Address of the Association is at c/o Helen Street Trustee, 20 Willow Way, Radlett, Herts, WD78DX The Trustees who served during the year as indicated are as follows: Mrs C Jessop Mrs H Street (Treasurer) Mr M Street (Chair) Mrs M Hardingham They were all re appointed during the AGM 13[th] October 2022 for another 3 years. The Choir is affiliated to Making Music (The National Federation of Music Societies), a registered charity which provides advice and services to affiliated societies. ## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE & MANAGEMENT** The Radlett Festival of Music is a charitable incorporated organisation and is governed by its Constitution, which was written in February 2014. Members of the Association can be elected or co-opted as necessary to become Trustees of the Association. The Trustees consult with the full membership at least once a year in General Meeting. ## **OBJECTIVES & ACTIVITIES** THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO ARE: TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF PUPILS IN SCHOOLS OR IN FULL TIME EDUCATION (UNDER THE AGE OF 25) WITHIN HERTFORDSHIRE AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS BY PROVIDING AND ASSISTING IN THE PROVISION OF FACILITIES, EQUIPMENT, MUSICAL PERFORMANCES AND TUITION NOT REQUIRED TO BE PROVIDED BY THE LOCAL EDUCATION AUTHORITY. THIS WILL INCLUDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN CONCERTS HELD IN PROFESSIONAL THEATRES WITH SPECIALISED RESOURCES SUCH AS SOUND AND LIGHTING ENGINEERS AND EQUIPMENT. TO PROMOTE, IMPROVE, DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN PUBLIC EDUCATION IN AND APPRECIATION OF THE ART AND SCIENCE OF MUSIC, IN PARTICULAR BY THE ORGANISING OF CONCERTS HELD IN PROFESSIONAL THEATRES, WITH SPECIALISED RESOURCES SUCH AS SOUND AND LIGHTING ENGINEERS AND EQUIPMENT, FOR PUBLIC ATTENDANCE IN AND AROUND HERTFORDSHIRE AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS These objects are met by giving performances of choral music in Hertfordshire at concerts throughout the year. A typical season contains works which are both classical and popular, covering a number of genres to appeal to both the groups singing in the concerts and the audience. The pieces are selected by the main concert organiser (Helen Street) in conjunction with 1 the various organisations, to provide variety during the course of the season for both choir members and audiences. In the furtherance of these objects, the Trustees have complied with the duty in S17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s published general and relevant sub-sector guidance concerning the operation of the Public Benefit requirement under that Act. The Trustees have continued to offer a programme of concerts during the year, which provided opportunities for amateur singers, musicians and composers to develop their skills and present music to a wide audience. Performances are given in public, to which the widest access possible is encouraged by good publicity and the setting of reasonable entry charges with concessions. The main beneficiaries of the Association are the singers, musicians, and those who attend the concerts. The Association is extremely grateful for the valuable contribution made by a number of volunteers, who have assisted in organising the performances throughout the year, notably Catherine Parkinson who assisted with Fair Field Junior School choir. ## **ACHIEVEMENTS & PERFORMANCE** Below is a review of the season for 2023: ## **Concert at the Radlett Centre.** The Radlett Festival of Music arranged a concert involving choirs from Fair Field Junior School, St Margaret’s School, local soloists, Ursa Minor Chamber Choir, Ursa Major Chamber Choir and Jubilate Ladies Choir. Each group performed individually, including selections from The School of Rock, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz and Wicked. These were under 25 minutes and not staged to keep within licensing requirements. The second half ended with songs which celebrated Friendship. The concerts were supported by generous grants from Hertsmere Borough Council and the Radlett Festival. ## **December 2023** A Christmas Concert was held at Christ Church involving choirs from St. John’s Infant and nursery school and Fair Field Junior School, along with the vocal groups Ursa Major and Ursa Minor and The Orchard Singers. This was a great success, and the church was full. Ursa Minor Chamber Choir also performed at the Christmas Lunch for Radlett residents and the audience enjoyed these pupils from Fair Field singing Christmas carols and songs. Some members of the group also participated in the Christmas Eve service at Christ Church, Radlett. ## **FUTURE PLANS 2024** The charity is considering a series of events for 2024. These include: **Concert at the Radlett Centre.** The Radlett Festival of Music will arrange a concert to include local school choirs, teenage performers, sound engineers/stage managers and local amateur 2 adults. Each group will perform individually in the first half and the second half will end with songs celebrating the Eurovision Song Competition, including a compilation of pieces by ABBA. These will be under 25 minutes and not staged to keep within licensing requirements. It will include choirs from Fair Field, St. John’s, St. Margaret’s, local soloists, Ursa Minor and Ursa Major Chamber Choirs. **December 2024** A Christmas Concert to be held at Christ Church, Radlett, involving, local soloists plus choirs from St. John’s Infant and nursery school and Fair Field Junior Schools. **December 2024** Christmas Lunch performance by soloists from Ursa Minor ## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** The charity received grants totalling £1,300 in 2023. Expenditure was mainly related to the concert at the Radlett Centre, such as venue and equipment hire, technical staff and advertising. The event made a loss, as tickets were priced very low to allow all family and friends to attend the concert. In addition, tickets available for sale were reduced as the children watched the concerts. This is an important part of the charity’s ethos; it is hoped that the children will be inspired to continue to perform into senior school and beyond. However, the loss was covered by generous grants from the Radlett Festival and Hertsmere Locality Budget for which the charity is very grateful. Reserves of £2,169 (2022 £2,681 ) were carried forward at the year end, which will be applied to future operations in line with the charity's objectives and also to specific projects as per the grant specification. The Choir holds a current bank account at Barclays Bank plc, Borehamwood Branch. The Independent Examiner for the year was Fiona Hall, ACA.
