## **Fledglings Pre-school Annual General Meeting Thursday 24[th] November 2022 – 4.00pm** **Present:** Holly White (Chair), Tanya Lovatt (Treasurer), Ellen Kennedy (Secretary), Jordan Beech (Committee Member), Fahmida Ahmed (Committee Member), Rosa Lloreda Martin (Parent), Klaus Goller (Parent), Nilufar Yesmin (Parent). **Apologies:** Emma Loveridge (Committee Member), Jasmine Hutchinson (Committee Member), Ana Bertea (Parent), Josie Smith (Parent), Mohammed and Bayan Hasan (Parents). ## **Minutes of last meeting** The committee accepted the minutes of the last AGM as a true reflection of the meeting. ## **Treasurer’s report and acceptance of accounts** One of the main purposes of the AGM is to submit the accounts for the previous year and have them accepted by the committee. We have received the accounts back from the accountant and she has made sure they are all correct. The accounts show that last year (between September 2021 and the end of August 2022) we had an income of £119,705.33 and expenditure of £115,404.84. This left us with a profit of £4,300.49. As a ‘not for profit’ charity, we like to invest as much back into the charity as possible. However, we do hold a savings accounts. The money in this allows us to hold approximately 3 months running costs, or redundancy money for all staff. This account now has enough funds to cover these costs, so we do not need to add to it this year, which means we do not have to make a profit – just break-even. However, following the recent budget, we are due to have an increase to the minimum wage in April 2023. Whilst we agree that staff in this sector should receive a much better wage, there are some concerns over how much this will cost us. Figures show that with wages, pension and tax, this increase will cost us approximately £9,000 per year. This is a huge amount and we will struggle if the government decide not to increase our funding. There are currently surveys and discussions in place to try to help the early years sector, and there is also talk of strike action to bring attention to this overstretch sector. Fledglings do not currently charge any extras (other than snack donations, which are voluntary). We would like to keep to this as we understand how our families have been affected by the cost of living crisis. We have enough money in our savings account to allow us to ride this out for the next couple of years, but we do now need to have a strong look at finances and fundraising. Our current figures as of Friday 11[th] November 2022 are: Savings Account: £24,008.59 Main Account £22,352.47 Petty Cash £136.54 Total: **£46,497.60** The funds in the main account have to last us until January 2022 when we will receive our next lot of funding for the Spring term. We are due another payment of £2,671.05 before the year end as well. The accounts were accepted by the committee and will now be published to the Charities Commission and made public. ## **Manager/Chair report** We are aware that some nursery / preschools have closed recently in the area, and there are a couple more due to close over Christmas. I can confirm that Fledglings are doing okay at the moment and we continue to monitor the funding situation. We are full for the rest of this academic year and have a healthy waiting list for September 2023 (11 children returning and 24 more on waiting list). We changed our Vision this academic year to show how much we value loose parts and risky play. We have become a predominantly loose parts classroom now, having removed most of the plastic toys we previously had and replacing them with a variety of loose parts. This includes wooden blocks, buttons, tubes, natural items and many other resources. The children need to use their imaginations with these items and therefore the learning opportunities have increased significantly. All the children have settled straight into this play and staff have found that it has had an amazingly positive impact on children who have Special Education Needs. Changing our resources to loose parts also allows us to keep our costs down, as most of these items are things found around the house, or collected outside (such as leaves, sticks, conkers). We have also included a risky play aspect. Children need to be able to risk assess certain areas for themselves to help with their development. Whilst we obviously still ensure children’s safety, we recognise that children need to be able to work out some risks for themselves. For example, we now allow children to climb up the slide (previously they were told they could only go down). By allowing this change, children need to look at what risks they may face (are there other children around? Is the slide slippery? Are they holding on properly?). Previously, using the slide would only allow for very simple physical skills. Now children have to use gross motor skills to climb and pull themselves up. They have to calculate risks and this will help them to navigate future risks successfully. This year we have also invested in a wellbeing app called ‘My Happy Mind’. This was made in collaboration with the NHS and has been heavily subsidised to allow us to purchase the programme. We have only just started this with children but we are hopeful it will be successful in helping with Personal, Social and Emotional development. The app is also available to parents (currently only 2 have downloaded the app, but we will continue to push this). A school trip will hopefully go ahead this academic year – we are looking at the farm, as we could not go last year due to the heatwave. All committee members will be invited to join in. We decided not to receive a refund from the coach company last year, so we already have this paid for. We will still ask parents for a contribution though. All staff have received training this year and a list has been prepared to show which have been attended by each staff member. ## **Policy Review** On separate sheet of paper. These are available for everyone to read if they wish and will be updated on Tapestry, allowing parents to access at any time. Any current committee members who cannot access Tapestry need to contact Louise to have their passwords reset. ## **Election of new committee** We welcome all parents to join the committee and would love if it reflected the cohort of our setting (over 50% non-English). This has been difficult to achieve for a variety of reasons, but we would love to support anyone interested in joining and having a say over the running of the charity. You do not need to have any special skills – just a voice. An added benefit of joining the committee is that we can add your name to our online learning directory, giving access to a variety of online courses for Free – which could be advantageous for anyone looking to improve skills or show up to date courses on their CV. ## **Any other business:** Previous parents discussed how much they and their children liked the ‘Around the World’ activity and feel this should be done again with the current cohort.
