## ST. AIDAN'S ANNUAL REPORT a celebration of church life during 2022 PARISH OF ST. AIDAN, SOUTHCOATES, HU9 3HF www.staidans.org.uk ## VICAR AND PARISH ## **“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” [Matthew 13:31-32]** Sometimes I get frustrated that I don’t see bigger signs of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth or even through our ministry here at St Aidan’s, and so I find this parable of Jesus very encouraging and reassuring. A mustard seed is tiny and difficult to see. Nevertheless, it exists and is a sign of new life with the potential to grow into something much bigger. Well, Jesus says that is what the kingdom of heaven is also like. Sometimes it is difficult to see and discern, but as it grows it becomes more visible and obvious. That’s why God tells us, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” [Zechariah 4:10]. Well, over the last couple of years or so, we have increasingly seen more visible and obvious signs of the Kingdom of Heaven growing in and through the Body of Christ at St Aidan’s, which is very exciting.As I look back on 2022 I want to highlight some of the signs of that happening: **Reaching unreached people** - Jesus’ mission was ‘to seek and save the lost’ - those far from God - and through Messy Church, Open the Book, Prayer on the Streets, the Well-Being and Going Deeper groups we were able to connect and share the Gospel with and disciple a wide range of unchurched people of varying ages, some of whom had never heard about the Good News of Jesus.We were also able to support a number of these people on a practical level. ## **New people joining our church family** - every family gets excited when there are new additions to it, and it was wonderful to see our church family added to in 2022, including a growing number of families and children joining us on a Sunday morning. Page 02 **Discipleship and evangelism training** - to see the kingdom grow, we too need to grow in our faith and discipleship. In 2022 more of our fellowship were trained and equipped to engage with non-believers by offering prayer, sharing their own story and God’s story, and helping people to look at the stories of Jesus. We hope for this to expand further in 2023. **Baptisms** - it was a joy to baptise eight people (adults and children) via full emersion over two services in September and November, as people made either first time commitments or re-commitments to Jesus and died to their old life and rose to new life in Him. **Funding** - during 2022 God blessed us abundantly, as we were able to access over £100,000 worth of funding allowing us to secure the employment of Dan Broom for 3 years, pay for some essential maintenance and repairs and support a number of other areas of our mission and ministry. A huge thank you to Dan for all that he did to secure the funding. The mustard seed is growing and ‘the Lord rejoices to see the work begin’. Let’s rejoice too for all the Lord has done in and through us in 2022, and let’s pray we will see continued growth in 2023. Page 03 ## PRAYER In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul urges his readers to ‘pray continually’. Indeed, prayer is supposed to infuse all aspects of a believer’s life and the life of the Church. Prayer shows our utter dependence on God and His power because, as Jesus said, apart from Him we can do nothing. So, we have to constantly seek to make prayer a foundational part of our spiritual life at St Aidan’s, as it is through prayer that we see lives transformed, God provide and doors of opportunity opened. This year we continued our weekly Tuesday morning Zoom prayer meetings bringing before God the needs of people in our church family, our community, city and beyond. We also enjoyed quarterly weeks of prayer, which were powerful times of intercession and hearing from God. Thank you to all of you for your continued prayer over the past year whether you’ve prayed at home (and many other places!), as a member of the various ministries and groups as they gather, during our Sunday and Wednesday services, or through specific prayer events and meetings. Prayer is one way that we can all invest in the life of our church and community, so, as Paul urges us, let’s seek to grow in our ability to ‘pray continually’, so that we will see God’s Kingdom invade earth and lives transformed. Page 04 ## PRAYER ON THE STREETS During 2022 a team of St Aidan’s members continued to regularly go out on the streets in our community (mainly on a Wednesday and/or Saturday) to engage with people and to pray over the streets and houses. We were able to deepen existing relationships and begin to build new ones, as we offered prayer and shared Jesus. On occasions we were invited into homes and with one family we were able to begin looking at the Bible. One of the highlights of the our time on the streets was a Carols service we held on Bilsdale Grove in December in partnership with Back to Ours and their Christmas Parade. We set up gazebos, music system and lights and offered free hot chocolate, tea and mince pies/biscuits. Many people turned out, despite the rain, and enthusuastically sung carols and we served around 150 hot chocolates. In March the prayer on the streets team and other members of St Aidan’s received some evangelism and discipleship training, which equipped us with some simple and powerful tools to share our own story and the Gospel with those far from God. During the day 6 groups of 2 spent less than an hour in the local community and were able to talk to 47 people - praying for 20 of them and sharing the Gospel with 9. It was so encouraging to see the impact we could have in such a short space of time in reaching those far from God. Using the tools we received from the training we have grown in confidence and boldness in intentionally sharing the Gospel significantly more with those we meet. Many thanks to all those who came out on the streets and helped out at the carols and to all who have prayed for this ministry. Page 05 ## VOLUNTEERING AND SERVING ## **‘Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.’. [1 Peter 4:10]** One of the wonderful things about being part of the Church, the Body of Christ, is that each part of the Body is needed because we each bring different gifts with which we can serve and bless one another and our community. It would be literally impossible for us to open the church doors on a Sunday, let alone run our various other ministries, without the help of a small and wonderful army of volunteers who give up their time and energy to use their gifts to selflessly serve - many serving in multiple ways. Below is a flavour of the different areas of church life that we depend on volunteers for in order for those things to happen: - Sunday and Wednesday services - welcome team, coffee team, IT/sound team, worship team, prayer and reading team, counting collection, children’s church - Messy Church Team - Schools ministry - Open the Book team at Southcoates School, governors at Alderman Cogan’s - Prayer on the Streets team - Wellbeing and Deeper groups - Gardens maintenance team - Buildings maintenance team - Administration support, including Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer ## Parochial Church Council (PCC) A huge thank you to all who have served at St Aidan’s in one capacity or another this past year. We are in constant need of people volunteering their gifts and time, so if you would like to explore how your gifts could be used to bless and serve our church and community please speak to either Rich or Dan. Page 06 ## SAFEGUARDING Safeguarding means the action the Church takes to promote a safer culture. The Church of England affirms the ’Whole Church' approach to safeguarding. This approach encompasses a commitment to consistent policy and practice across all Church bodies, Church Officers and that everyone associated with the Church, who comes into contact with children, young people and adults, has a role to play. St. Aidan's Parochial Church Council has complied with section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to the House of Bishops' guidance relating to the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults). All members of the PCC, as trustees, participate in the training required by the Guidance, to complete a Confidential Declaration Form and have a DBS check. If you have any concerns relating to Safeguarding please contact our team. The appointed Safeguarding Representative for St. Aidan's is Rev. Rich Phillips. The Assistant Safeguarding Representative for St. Aidan's is Mrs. Barbara Osbourne. Page 07 ## FAMILIES AND CHILDREN Seeking to reach out to families and children has long since been a key priority at St. Aidan’s. Of course, we want to be a church for all generations, but so often it is 20s-40s and their children that are the missing generation, and so in 2022 it was a joy to continue to engage with families and children in our community both inside and outside the church and to see the number of families joining us on a Sunday growing. Here are some highlights from our various families and children’s ministries: **Messy Church** - spearheaded by Jo, Esther and Dan and a wonderful team of volunteers, Messy Church enabled us to continue to engage families in discovering more about who God is through bible stories, crafts, songs and prayer. Our heart has always been to draw families into a closer relationship with God and each other. To try and deepen that, in September we increased the frequency of Messy Church to twice a month. As the year progressed, one of the challenges we faced was a reduction in the number of families attending. **New Worshipping Community** - Jo Milns, in her capacity as our Multiply Worker, continued to invest in the families we connect with, especially the mum’s, and ran a well-being course with support from Catherine Huntridge and Mandy Grimston, which evolved into a ‘Going Deeper’ group that Catherine and Mandy led with some beautiful times of the women experiencing God at a deeper level. **Sunday Kid’s Church** - having had to close our children’s church due to the Covid pandemic, it was fantastic to be able to restart it in 2022. Led by Ali Phillips, we were able to establish a regular pattern, twice monthly, of the children engaging in bible stories, prayer and craft. It was so encouraging to see the number of children increase as the year progressed. Page 08 ## FAMILIES AND CHILDREN **Schools** - Following a time of severe disruption, from September 2022 the Open the Book team, led by Esther Billington, was finally able to return to weekly assemblies at Southcoates Primary Academy, allowing the children to grasp more of the Bible timeline, as well as learning, enjoying and remembering key things from individual stories. The team enjoyed building relationships with the children and the staff and always receive an enthusiastic welcome, with the children keen to get involved in acting out the Bible stories. At Alderman Cogan’s, Rich continued to be involved with leading Collective Worship and Rich and Dave Milns continued to support the governing body in their role as Foundation Governors. It was also wonderful to welcome Cogan’s and Southcoates into St Aidan’s for various services and performances throughout the year, including Easter, Harvest and Christmas, as well as running mock baptisms and weddings with classes at Cogan’s. Please do pray for new team members for our various families and children’s ministries, in particular our Open the Book team. Page 09 ## BUILDINGS AND PREMISES Dan Broom chairs the Buildings and Premises Committee who report to the PCC. The Committee are overseeing a shift in our approach to building management, adopting a proactive approach when it comes to managing our buildings and site developments, and are committed to overseeing dayto-day maintenance, repair and improvements of our site. A special thanks to members Steve Billington and Steve Pickering for all their ongoing hard work. We secured grants from ASDA Community Spaces and Places fund, the Rank Foundation Pebbles Grant Stream, and York Diocese Board of Finance for a scheme of repairs and improvements to the buildings and gardens, including extensive electrical remedial works and new fencing. The Committee oversee the Maintenance Days, with a huge thanks to everyone that comes along to help. The days are always a great team effort, whether you end up painting, power hosing, or making the bacon butties! We value the ongoing work of Julie Lowson and Michael Hill, and appreciate all they do to clean the church, hall, café, office and meeting rooms. We also continue to enjoy the outdoor spaces around church and the gardens, thanks to the growing team of volunteers for all the time and effort they give on a regular basis. As we look ahead, we have exciting plans to ensure that St. Aidan’s continues to be a welcoming and accessible space for our church community to gather. We hope to secure further grant funding for repairs and improvements, with the aim to enable as much of your generous financial giving to go towards our mission and ministry costs in 2023, rather than be spent on the building. Page 10 ## FINANCES The Church Accounts include the General Fund, 4 Designated Accounts and 2 Restricted Accounts. The General Fund contains the bulk of our giving, our Parish Share payment to York Diocese, and our day-to-day running expenses. The Accounts are produced and issued to the PCC on a monthly basis, and the Annual Accounts are approved at the Church AGM, are professionally examined, and then submitted to the Diocesan Finance Dept. In 2022, total giving in the GF was £32,358.46 – this total is before we take off the tithe portion (10%), and compares to £33,085 in 2021 (£727 down or 2.2% down). However, this reduction was overcome by a very healthy one-off grants total of £12,864 (£400 in 2021) – with our grateful thanks to Mr D. Broom for his hard work on the various applications. The 2022 figure comprises of: 2 grants from YDBF (York Diocese Board of Finance) £600 (New fence) and £2,000 (Fuel); Asda Foundation £5,600 (Building repairs); Rank Foundation £364 (Building maintenance); Nunburnholme Trust £300 (Educational books/toys); St Andrews Church (Kirk Ella) £4,000 (Free Will Offering). Lettings income of £16,534.88 in 2022 was £2,256.02 up on 2021 (Up 15.8%). Overall, our General Fund Income was £65,168.92, up 28% on the previous year. On the expenditure side, GF Expenditure of £58,261.18 in 2022 was £2,820.95 (5%) above 2021 level. The biggest expense is our Parish Share (FWO), and this is decided in the September time prior to the following year, so in 2021 the PCC decided to reduce the FWO for 2022 to £28,000 (£33,000 in 2021), as we expected 2022 to be even more challenging than 2021; Salaries were up by £385.70 to £4,345.92 (We employ Mrs J. Lowson and Mr M. Hill for cleaning, and Mrs B. Osbourne for admin); Running Costs of £9,442.82 (£8,820 in 2021) include Insurance £3,808, CCLI Licence £1,496, Gas servicing £480, Accountants £552; Major Repairs amounted to £7,528.50 (Comprising a New Fence after storm damage £2,450, Electrical repairs £2,678, New Toilet Windows £685, New Water Heater £360, Window repair £55, Hall electrical repairs £1,300). To conclude, in 2022, the GF had a surplus of £6,907 (£4,672 deficit in 2021). Page 11 ## FINANCES Briefly, to mention some of the other areas in the Accounts, our Tithe Giving was £3,990 – we gave £724.00 to 5 charities: Bridges Hull, Eternal Benefits, Hull YFC, Label of Love, Oasis (CCUK); £220 to Oasis (CCUK) Child Sponsorship; and £150 to Young Adult Educational Sponsorship in Philippines. We renamed the Friendship and Fellowship Designated Account to the Community Development Project Designated Account, as our new area of mission was established. The PCC appointed Mr D. Broom initially for 20 days, and now after considerable successful grant funding bids, we can employ Dan for 4 days per week for 3 years! In 2022, Grants Received – One Off was £60,380 (Sir James Reckitt Charity £55,000, Forum Winter Warmth Community Grant £4,180, Back to Ours Christmas Parade £1,000, HCC Warm Spaces £200), and Grants Received – Reoccurring was £8,333 (Mr Willat’s Charity). In 2022, the Church joined the contactless giving era, when we installed the SumUp machine in the Café Area, and the PCC also decided to join the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS), an established service for managing One-Off and Direct Debit giving, designed to support churches to fund their mission and ministry. PGS reduces the burden of work on church volunteers (E.g. Reclaim of Gift Aid from HMRC) and provides a simple and secure service to givers.We were due to go live with PGS from 01/01/23! An enormous ‘Thank You’ to all our faithful givers, and to the Finance Team, who give their time every Wednesday and Sunday, and especially to Yvonne Kavanagh, who stepped down as Assistant Treasurer in 2022, after many years of dedicated service, and to Michael Rablen, who stepped down as Church Treasurer, but has then continued to serve in the Assistant Treasurer role. We continue to trust in God, and we sincerely thank Him for His abundant provision in 2022. Revd. Phillips thanked everyone for attending and to those who submitted reports for the APCM. Michael Rablen and Yvonne Kavanagh are stepping down as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer and they were thanked for their services. Michael Rablen presented the financial report for 2021 and thanked everyone for their support. He reminded the con8re8ation about Sl8nin8 up for Gift Aid. In the General Fund there is a deficit of £4.672. 2021 was the second year affected by the Covid pandemic. In September we were looking at a £5,OIXI overspend. Freewill offering is the biggest outgoing amount butthe PCC decided to commit to the amount already agreed. In return we receive the services of our Vicar, leadership, applyin8 for grants, and training. Lettings income was £977 per week. Expenditure was £1,066 per week. Michael explained the outgoinBs. Exceptional expenditure items were PAT and electrical testing - £2.ICO. As a Church we tithe £5.993 to Eternal Benefits. Bridges, Students in the Philippines, Colombia Child Care. Hull YFC and Label of Love. The Njoya family is also supported bv members of St Aidans. Assets at 31" December 2021: General Funij £38.932 Friendship & Fellow￿hIp £6,310 Tithes £3,990 Missions £625 New Worshipping Community £ 2,906 Eden £23,401 Michael stated that the accounts were available for anyone to inspect if required. He thanked St Aidans, faithful givers and asked everyone to consider increasing their giving. Dave Milns will take over as Treasurer and Michael expressed his grateful thanks to him. Thank you to the Lord who has blessed us during these last few months. Rerfd Phillips thanked Michael for his report. Page 19 ANNUAL MEETING The service was immediately followed by the Parishionets, Meeting. Minutes of the St Aidan'5 Parishioners, Meeting: Rev'd Phillips opened the meeting with a prayer and thanked everyone for supporting the ChLJrch by attending, explaining that everyone on the Electoral Roll is eli8ible to vote. The purpose of this meeting is to appoint Church Wardens. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. Proposed: Steve Billington Seconded: Paul Ra8dale All in favour al The notice convenin8 the meeting had been placed on the Church door prior to the meeting. bl Appointment of Church Wardens: Church Wardens have a key role in the ministry of the Church. Rev'd Phillips expressed thanks to Dan Broom together with Steve Pickering and Steve Billington for all their hard work during the last year. Dan had co- ordinated the recent QI inspection tO8ether with the PAT and electrical inspections. As Dan is now an employee of the Church it would be better if he steps down as Church Warden which means we will again be withouta Church Warden. There are three areas of duty- Management, Mission and Maintenance. The Maintenance will be covered mainly by the Buildin8 Premises Committee. If anyone durin8 the next year would like to be Church Warden please see Rev'd Phillips. Consideration is being given to renaming the Electoral Roll'church Membership, to encourage more people to sign up. Dawn Rablen and Dave Milns are our representatives and are in their second term of office. I report on the financial statements of St Aidan’s Church, Southcoates for the year ended 31st December 2022, which are set out on pages 3 to 7. ## **Respective responsibilities of committee members and independent examiner.** As the committee members you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statement; you consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011(the Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: - Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Act; To follow such procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the Act and; To state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of independent examiner’s report:** My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by St Aidan’s Church Committee and a comparison of the financial statements with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. Funding for purposes designated for a specific purpose by the Trustees is credited to “designated funds”. ,760.78| These financial statements were approved by the members of the General Committee on and signed on their behalf by: - Reverend R Phillips 6 ## **St Aidans Southcoates, PCC** **Notes To Financial Statements For The Year Ended 31st December 2022** ## 1. **ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## 1.1 **Basis of preparation** The financial statements of the PCC have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 using the Receipts and Payments Basis. ## 1.2 **Grants and donations** A donation or grant to the charity is recognised as incoming funds when all the following conditions have been met: - (a) The charity is legally entitled to receipt; - (b) There is reasonable assurance of receipt; and (c) Its monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability. ## 1.3 ## **Fund accounting** Incoming resources that may be applied for the charity’s general purposes are treated as “unrestricted” incoming resources and are credited to the “unrestricted funds”. Funding for purposes designated for a specific purpose by the Trustees is credited to “designated funds”. Where a donation or grant is required to be used for a specific purpose, the amount concerned is treated as a “restricted” incoming resource and is credited to the appropriate “restricted fund”. - 1.4 The charity is registered in the UK and has the benefit of exemption from UK tax liability provided any surplus made by the charity is used for charitable purposes. 7
