## **APCM – Report 2020**

As we reflect on the past twelve months it seems almost impossible to express the events that we have lived through. Unprecedented has become an overused word like lockdown but what other words can we use? In March 2020 we were presented with a question, ‘what does church look like when we are in lockdown and all the normal social norms have been removed?’ We rightly recognise relationships as a core to who we are and what we do at All Saints, now we had to think about ‘church’ in a new way.

A huge thank you must go to those people who have worked so hard at the changes we made, whether delivering, presenting ideas or putting new things into practice the ‘learning curve’ was very steep.

Rev. Bob Kisa was officially licensed as a vicar at All Saints alongside Mike. This has been a long time in coming caused mainly by unnecessary government bureaucratic nonsense, but we are delighted that both he and Emms have felt God has called them to serve at All Saints. We are already seeing something of his change of role as we look to the future. It was brilliant news that brought a little dance of delight from Mike!!

We have also been blessed through the last twelve months with Helen our curate and her family. A very different kind of curacy, but nevertheless she has shown huge wisdom and creativity supporting all we have tried to do. She deserves a huge thank you as both Ian and Helen have thrown themselves into the life of the church.

Both of them have been essential in the changes we have had to make. Over the past twelve months we have a new online presence initially through ‘pre-recorded’ services and then ‘live streamed.’ Bob helped us do these things and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Thank you as well for your patience as our lack of skill sometimes caused online chaos!

We were very aware of those people who could not access either our new ‘WhatsApp’ church group or internet based worship and so we put together a series of home delivery bags that became known as ‘Bags of Blessing.’ We hope they have helped people in daily prayer feel at least in some way connected with others. They were delivered first of all soon after lockdown and then before summer, again in advent at Christmas and for lent. Alongside prayer resources we hope you smiled at chocolate, biscuits and other small appropriate gifts that we wanted to say you are not forgotten and loved by God. It was Helens hard work that has made these things possible.

We quickly also developed daily ‘Zoom’ based prayers which we have continued throughout the year. Thank you so much to all those who have led these times we recognise the discipline and commitment this takes but believe these prayers have been a real blessing to our local community. It has been amazing to welcome friends to prayer from India and across the country. Bob and Valerie then added to them by prayer on Wednesday evening as well.

Helen arranged and made available a prayer walk around Newsome Park with a paper map and online access it has given daily ‘exercise’ a lovely focus of prayer. She has also arranged and led a number of 24/7 prayer events allowing us to use the internet to come together in prayer.

Lent allowed us to complete the 24/7 prayer course 2 asking important questions around issues of unanswered prayer.

I have heard and understand people saying we have been all ‘zoomed’ out! Yet it has connected us through business and social activity. PCC meetings, Bible study, reading groups, quizzes, virtual pub and coffee after services have all been a real blessing. Again thank you so much to everyone who took the time and effort to run any one of these events I know they were a lifeline to many.

When we first went into lockdown we tried to create a network of support through telephone calls with people taking on ringing regularly to a small group. Thank you for this simple and yet amazing act that I know lifted the spirits of those who you rang. Many have kept this going throughout the year and helped people through some of the darker days.

Christmas presented a number of problems one being how we could serve those for whom because of poverty Christmas is a fear not a blessing. Organised by Helen we arranged to buy 100 frozen Christmas dinners and began to take a list of those who would benefit. (Because Mike couldn’t count we ended up buying another 25!) Alongside this we thought about presents first for children and families and then for single people. Recognising as well, the continued need for food parcels, we added those as well. Through your amazing generosity, the hard work of the church leaders the Hub became a ‘grotto,’ and all the meals together with over 60 deliveries of food and presents were provided to the most vulnerable. In fact we were live streaming midnight communion and a local resident came for help after all the Christmas stuff had been stolen that evening when their flat had been broken into. We were able to help immediately with food and presents. Thank you for your generosity; thank you for your hard work and organisation and deliveries.

Alongside the prayer walk we placed across our community a ‘Follow the Star,’ Christmas walk moving from place to place following the story of the birth of Jesus.

We began two trees for prayer, one arranged by Sally as a prayer tree to all those who attended the Hub for help, the second on the wall of the Worship Centre offering opportunity to say thank you to all who have served us and remembering those lost to COVID.

The year has not been without moments when we were allowed to worship together and it seemed like a real blessing as we came together all be it for too short a time. That required COVID restrictions with masks being worn, seating 2m apart, no singing or mixing before and after the services. Yet it was brilliant just to be together. So it was with a heavy heart during the most recent lockdown that although ‘allowed’ we took the decision that we should not meet together through lent and over Easter 21.

Early in the year it became apparent that people were coming to the Hub for all kinds of help. This included telephone calls, issues of Domestic Abuse, homelessness, internet access and above all food. For people who overnight lost their jobs it became really difficult to eat or find money for electricity and gas. In fact we found that the poverty very real before COVID became more acute during it. We took the decision to open the Hub for two hours every morning and this included providing Foodbank vouchers and bags of food alongside the additional help required. Prayer supported this ministry, we remember one morning praying because we had no food to give, five minutes after the prayer we answered the phone to someone asking if we needed £1,000 of food! We said yes in the midst of thanking God. Alongside this some of you have faithfully brought food for us each week, please receive a huge thank you for your generous gifts.

We continue to provide the wider church with leaders and thank you for Jennie and Claire and their families as they approach the end of their training and begin to engage with their own curacies.

We are often saddened and excited when people leave All Saints into new areas of ministry and this was certainly true of Kirsty and Saeid as they joined a team in St Helens planting a new church. We miss them both and they go with our blessings and continued prayer in their new venture.

Rev. Anne Murray served first St John’s and latterly All Saints as a self – supporting minister and she retired this year. Her wisdom and sensitivity alongside the way she led us in her ministry to prayer was a huge blessing to us. We miss you but know that God will take you into a new chapter of ministry and family life. Thank you for your service to this community.

Bob Corrin served as our warden until in March 2020 and sadly lost his life to COVID. His smile and gentle humour alongside his willingness to serve will be greatly missed. He worshipped at St Philip’s and the All Saints all his life and we know that he has a place with God. We remember his family particularly his daughter Lyndsey. Thank you for all you did Bob we miss you. The PCC elected to remember him through planting a tree in Newsome Park which can be seen with others remembering those lost to COVID at https://www.treehouseliverpool.co.uk

Our finances continue to benefit from your amazing generosity but the lockdown has had a significant effect on giving. Alongside this you will see in the accounts a large loss that was as a result of someone stealing money from us. No one is to blame as the theft was done through internet access and we continue to fight to have the money repaid. Unfortunately that means going to the Ombudsmen and we are waiting their response. We have tried to allow people to access other ways to give including a ‘Just Giving’ page. Please contact us if you wish to review your giving or have any questions.

What church will look like in the future is a difficult question since we don’t really know what the world will look like. At the time of writing this we have spent time thinking about All Saints and recognising the changes that need to be made. We have renewed our vision which now says, ‘All Saints Church, growing God’s kingdom; Discipleship: Community: Justice and Sanctuary.’ We hope this will, through prayer and Gods leadership, inform our future activity

confirming our commitment to serve those who live in poverty locally, nationally and internationally. We also want a commitment to fight injustice wherever it happens but particularly through climate change as we seek to follow ‘EcoChurch’ and ‘Toolkit’ resources to connect all we do to a greater understanding of climate justice.

Of course we are followers of Jesus and so also fully commit to a growing church with new people recognising God in their lives. Our Bible passage for 2021 reminds us of Gods call on our lives. ‘Micah 6 verse 8, ‘ He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? **To act justly and to love mercyand to walk humbly**[[][a][]] with your God.”

Mostly the Parish Church was unused through each lockdown but a huge thanks to Maria who cleans the building under COVID rules. At the Worship Centre, Manbir cleans both the Hub and Hall and we owe her a huge debt of gratitude. Sally has worked throughout the year sometimes from home and has kept us going with her hard work, wisdom and creativity. The prayer tree in the Hub allowed a lot of prayer and conversation with those who called. Thank you Sally.

Irene and Don have worked as our wardens, supported by Wilson and they have done a huge amount of work most of which is unseen by most. Thank you to them in their hard work. Don has taken responsibility for our website which now receives lots of comment and praise. It helps with our communication and allows people to easily access both pre-recorded and streamed services.

With such an uncertain future we must finish with a commitment to give our lives completely to God and always keep our eyes on him. Jesus when asked what is the ‘most important commandment,’ reminds us of our primary need to worship God when he replied,’“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ (Matt 22: 36-40)

Jesus reminds us that whatever the future holds and however it will affect us that we should keep our eyes fixed firmly on him.

Bob and Mike.
