Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
In the financial period, Streets of London provided £45,250 in extra funding to registered charities working to support homeless people in London during the Covid-19 pandemic. During 2020-21, many homeless day centres were forced into limiting or making significant changes to their services during the pandemic and had to be resourceful in findings new ways to keep providing support. Given the exceptional situation, the trustees decided that rather than providing project funding in the way it normally does, the charity would provide small grants to partner charities that we knew were still open and operating, to provide them with flexible emergency funding so they could continue to help homeless people through this challenging time. Shortly after the pandemic began - in early April 2020 - Streets of London made a series of grants totalling £10,000 in emergency funding, shared between the five following charities: The Connection at |
St Martin's, Homeless Action in Barnet, SPEAR, The Passage, Providence Row. During the year, charity partners helped homeless people by: • Finding emergency accommodation for rough sleepers and providing ongoing support to them while there. • Providing support to clients remotely in many cases, keeping in contact by phone, WhatsApp and Zoom so they could continue to offer advice, advocacy and emotional support in a Covid-safe way. • Regular contact provided a support network for people, letting them know they’re not alone, and it meant they could continue to receive vital support around things such as mental health, addiction and employability training, to keep making progress towards longterm recovery. • Many centres continued to offer vital basic support where they could (such as providing a regular hot breakfast, a shower etc). • Outreach teams provided help to rough sleepers still out on the streets, providing food, warm clothing, medical attention, help with collecting medical prescriptions and other support. In February 2021 the charity made grants totalling more than £35,000 to support this work, shared between the following eleven partner charities: Ace of Clubs, C4WS, Homeless Action in Barnet, Providence Row, Shelter from the Storm, Spires, Spitalfields Crypt Trust, The Margins Project, The Upper Room, Whitechapel Mission, 999 Club. In addition to the above, Streets of London helps to raise public awareness about homelessness, with the aim of motivating more people to donate money to, raise money for and/or volunteer with charities that support homeless people, and to engender increased empathy for the plight of homeless people. We do this by distributing information at our events and making information about homelessness available on our website. Further to this, the charity has high-profile ambassadors who publicly express their support for the cause
| and put across some of the key messages about the issue. |

Para 1.20 | IMPACT OF GRANTS During the financial period, the charity made grants totalling £45,250 to charities working to support homeless people in London, thereby having a significant positive impact on the lives of many people who have become homeless. STREETS OF LONDON SLEEP-OUT AT HOME, OCT 2020 2020 was a challenging year for fundraising (especially as a charity that relies on events for a significant proportion of its income) but our sleep-out at home event was a great success. Holding the event virtually in 2020 allowed people to take part in spite of the various public health measures in place. 177 people took part in the Streets of London Sleep-Out At Home, raising an amazing £40,000+ to help homeless people in London. People took part in their own homes. They grabbed a sleeping bag and slept out in their garden (where they could) or else on the floor, giving up the comfort of their bed for one night in a simple act of solidarity and raising money to help people sleeping rough in the capital. The charity’s annual sleep-out is a great fundraising opportunity and also a great awareness-raiser about the cause. As well as helping to fund homelessness projects through their fundraising, people taking part experience (safely) some of the challenges that homeless people have to face every night. It’s nothing like the reality of being homeless of course, but it’s an eye-opener, an act of solidarity and a great tangible way people can get involved. CORPORATE SUPPORT We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge with gratitude the corporate support the charity was lucky enough to receive during the year from a number of valued partners. |
