This resource is essential for the success of research and has resulted in four peer- reviewed journal articles from the group in the past five years, with a further publication under re,view and others in preparation. Funding for the salary of Dr Martin Grundy is in place until January 2026. Dr Grundy is in charge of collection and processing patient samples and has a wealth of experience in this technically challenging area {bloodlbone marrow cells are incredibly fragile and notoriously difficult to work with to generate meaningful results). Research projects he is involved in include testing new genetic agents in leukaemia and assessing exactly what occurs in leukaemia cells as they proliferate and how this differs to normal healthy blood cells. He has also been involved in developing models for leukaemia and myeloma to best replicate what happens in a patient. In addition, Dr Grundy is working on the role of the mutated nucleophosmin protein in leukaemia and has been using special imaging equipment to study what happens in real time in leukaemia cells as they grow and divide. He has found abnormalities in leukaemia cells harbouring the mutated protein. These results have been submitted for publication in the Journal of Cell Science and the nianuscript is currently under expert review. The work is continuing to identify how we might specifically target and kill the mutant cells without affecting the normal blood cells. The NLA are also funding Dr Alexander Kondrashov for five months. Dr Kondrashov is developing novel genetic models to recreate leukaemia initiating events. This involves growing leukaemia cells from patients in special culture to allow the production and manipulations of stem cell these are the cells that start the leukaemia. The aim is to develop a novel model of early onset leukaemia. The work supported fulfils the objective of the NLA to promote the advancement of research into the treatment of leukaemia in Nottinghamshire. The quality of the funded research is evident by publication in international peer-reviewed journals (three articles published in 2018, one in 2019, three in 2020, one in 2023, one under review 2024 and several others in preparation).
