Funding for the salary of Dr Martin Grundy has been extended until January 2026. Dr Gnjndy is in
charge of collection and processing patient sample5 and has a wealth of exF*rience in this technically
challenging area Ibloodlbone marrow Cells a￿ incredibly fragile and notoriously difficult to work with lo
generate meaningful resuttsl. Research projects he is involved in inclLtde testing new genet￿ agents in
leukaemia and assessing exacdy what occurs in leukaemia cells as they proliferate and how this
differs to normal healthy bloc%1 cells. He has also been involved in developing models for leukaemia
and myeloma lo best replicate what hap￿nS in a pab"ent. In addition, Dr Grundy is working on the role
of the mutated nucleophosmin protein in leukaemia and has been using special imaging equipment lo
study what happens in real time in leukaemia cells as they grow and dtvide Part of this project was
presented at an international leukaemia conference (European School of Haematok)gyl in Esloril,
Portugal in October 2023 and is now being written up for publication. Work is now on-going to i¢Yenl
how we might specifically target and kill the mutant cells wthout killing the nomial cells.
PhD students Lara Doolan and Mays Abuhantash completed their NLA-fvnded Betty Barton
sludentships and graduated in 2023. Their work focused on models of bthd cancers which can be used
to efficiently and quickty test new drugs to identify which have potential to kill cancer cells. Novel findings
on how different leukaemia's may beeome resistant to therapies have also been generated and work
within the Blood Can￿r and Stem Cell Group in Notbngham is continuing to develop these areas of
research.
The work supported knlfils the objective of the NLA lo pronv)te the advancement of research Into the
treatment of leukaemia in NottJ"nghamshire. The quality of the funded research is evident by publication
