All Trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration for their activity.

The orchestra has clear guidelines regarding the conduct of meetings, selection of officers, managing the accounts and the procedures for recruiting players and planning charity concerts. These guidelines, agreed by the trustees and regularly reviewed, are included in the induction of all new trustees.

The trustees have a policy of maintaining a reserve fund to mitigate any financial risks. The risks policy is under periodic review so that there are appropriate mitigation plans in place.

Section C Objectives and activities

  1. To promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in the performance and appreciation of the art and science of music, by the presentation of public concerts and recitals. Summary of the objects of the 2. To further the work of other charitable organisations involved either in charity set out in its the relief, care, wellbeing and rehabilitation of children or in the provision governing document generally of medical facilities, medical treatment or medical research by promoting the work of these organizations through the presentation of public concerts and recitals and by making grants to these organisations for stipulated purposes. Summary of the main In planning our activities, the trustees kept in mind the Charity activities undertaken for the Commissions guidance on public benefit at our meetings. The focus of public benefit in relation to our activities is to promote the art and science of music through these objects (include within participation in and presentation of public charity concert performances. this section the statutory declaration that trustees have Donations by the European Doctors Orchestra are made from concert had regard to the guidance proceeds to a specific charity who participates in the planning and issued by the Charity organisation of that concert. Commission on public benefit)

Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

The Orchestra could not function without the enthusiastic support of the players who participate in our weekends of music, practise and perform in the charity concerts.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

The European Doctors Orchestra registered as a foundation CIO in November 2013. The Trustees intend to organise two charity concerts each year, usually in November and May/June inviting players from across Europe to participate.

We were planning concerts in Olomouc, Czech Republic and Glasgow in 2019-2020. However, these concerts had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Olomouc concert subsequently took place in June 2022.

The Orchestra was invited to participate in the Nantes La Folle Journée festival in January 2022, however, as in the previous year the Covid pandemic forced the EDO to cancel its participation again. The trustees took the view that assembling an orchestra of doctor players from several different countries was impractical and ill-advised. Recruitment had started for the orchestra for Nantes, therefore after cancellation, those registration fees that had already been paid required refunding.

A full programme of three concerts was planned for the 2022/23 year in the UK, France and Germany.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main The orchestra played successful concerts in London in October 2022, achievements of the charity Nantes, France, in February 2023 as part of “la Folle Journée” music during the year festival and two performances of the Verdi Requiem in Wiesbaden and Bad Nauheim, Germany in April 2023. The last two performances were in collaboration with the German Doctors Choir.

The London concert raised a total of £14,788 for the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund. The two German concerts raised 26,000€ for several local charities. The Nantes concert raised approximately 20,000€ for the West of France Cancer Centre research charity. The exact amount is not known as it was handled directly by the organisers of the event and not by the European Doctors Orchestra.

Section E Financial review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

The charity has reviewed its reserves policy and now intends to maintain a reserve of approximately £40,000. This is in the light of the necessary concert cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The reserves are required in any case to enable the Orchestra to fund advance deposits for venue hire etc. before funds for a particular event are received. It has also proved essential to mitigate losses should a concert weekend fail to take place due to factors outside our control. The charity held bank funds of £77,595 on 31[st] July 2023. However, for the concert scheduled in the next financial year for September 2023 we had collected registration income and sponsorship but had yet to settle many large invoices.

Further financial review details (Optional information)

You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:

The receipts and payments accounts for the year show net receipts of £84,901 and cash funds at this year-end of £77,595.

Players that participate in a concert normally pay a registration fee and fund their own individual travel and accommodation expenses. There is sometimes additional income from sponsors. This covers most of the cost of hiring venues, music, large instrument hire, etc. and paying a professional conductor and soloists. Therefore, the Orchestra expects to make a profit from ticket sales which can be donated to a charity in line with our charitable objectives.
