The European Doctors Orchestra registered as a foundation CIO in November 2013. The Trustees intend to organise two charity concerts each year, usually in November and May/June inviting players from across Europe to participate.
We were planning concerts in Olomouc, Czech Republic and Glasgow in 2019-2020. However, these concerts had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Olomouc concert subsequently took place in June 2022.
The Orchestra was invited to participate in the Nantes La Folle Journée festival in January 2022, however, as in the previous year the Covid pandemic forced the EDO to cancel its participation again. The trustees took the view that assembling an orchestra of doctor players from several different countries was impractical and ill-advised. Recruitment had started for the orchestra for Nantes, therefore after cancellation, those registration fees that had already been paid required refunding.
A full programme of three concerts was planned for the 2022/23 year in the UK, France and Germany.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main The orchestra played successful concerts in London in October 2022, achievements of the charity Nantes, France, in February 2023 as part of “la Folle Journée” music during the year festival and two performances of the Verdi Requiem in Wiesbaden and Bad Nauheim, Germany in April 2023. The last two performances were in collaboration with the German Doctors Choir.
The London concert raised a total of £14,788 for the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund. The two German concerts raised 26,000€ for several local charities. The Nantes concert raised approximately 20,000€ for the West of France Cancer Centre research charity. The exact amount is not known as it was handled directly by the organisers of the event and not by the European Doctors Orchestra.
Section E Financial review
Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
The charity has reviewed its reserves policy and now intends to maintain a reserve of approximately £40,000. This is in the light of the necessary concert cancellations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The reserves are required in any case to enable the Orchestra to fund advance deposits for venue hire etc. before funds for a particular event are received. It has also proved essential to mitigate losses should a concert weekend fail to take place due to factors outside our control. The charity held bank funds of £77,595 on 31[st] July 2023. However, for the concert scheduled in the next financial year for September 2023 we had collected registration income and sponsorship but had yet to settle many large invoices.

Further financial review details (Optional information)
You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:
-
the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);
-
how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;
The receipts and payments accounts for the year show net receipts of £84,901 and cash funds at this year-end of £77,595.
Players that participate in a concert normally pay a registration fee and fund their own individual travel and accommodation expenses. There is sometimes additional income from sponsors. This covers most of the cost of hiring venues, music, large instrument hire, etc. and paying a professional conductor and soloists. Therefore, the Orchestra expects to make a profit from ticket sales which can be donated to a charity in line with our charitable objectives.
- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.
