Warrington Youth Orchestra Limited (Registered number: 08666710)

Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 August 2024

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

The objectives and principal aims are:

  1. To help young people, especially but not exclusively through musical activities, so as to develop their capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society;

  2. To offer young people in Warrington and the surrounding areas the chance to perform in a real orchestra.

We want to have an impact on as many children as possible. Particularly as we come out of the covid pandemic, access to music has become increasingly important. Research shows that playing music together is incredibly beneficial for:

o improving mental wellbeing

o boosting confidence and self-esteem

o developing a sense of belonging and being part of something special

o reducing feelings of isolation

o bringing a sense of achievement with learning a new skill or improving an existing skill o meeting new friends across diverse socio-economic groups

o developing crucial skills in teamwork and communication.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for children whilst they are attending our orchestra and this is delivered through our Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy and Procedures.

We are fully inclusive, and welcome everyone regardless of their race, faith, religion, gender or disability.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Achievements and performance

Warrington Youth Orchestra continues to thrive, with excellent numbers across all our groups and orchestras.

In October 2023, 31 young people from Warrington Youth Orchestra travelled to Cleobury Mortimer, Worcestershire, for a music residential weekend. Here, they were joined by members of Hilden Music School, Germany. This was the first trip Hilden Music School had made to the UK in 4 years so it was very special indeed. Following the residential, there was a Mayors concert held at Bridgewater High School, which was attended by the Mayor of Warrington Steve Wright.

December 2023 - We returned to Dallam Primary School, where we held music workshops with over 200 children. Dallam Primary School is in an area with the highest level of deprivation, and has the highest percentage of children receiving free school meals. In particular, the Special Educational Needs (SEN) pupils really enjoyed the music sessions, where they got to play a variety of orchestral instruments.

December 2023 - We held our Christmas Carol Concert at Bridgewater High School, where parents and children sang to carols played by our Symphony orchestra, Chamber orchestra, Pre-chamber Strings and Concert Band.

December 2023 - Some of the parents and players helped on the Santa Float raising money for WYO and the Rotary of Lymm.

February 2024 - Some of our teachers went to Warrington Youth Zone to take part in special lunar new year celebrations in connection with Mulan Culture. They held workshops through out the day, teaching kids to play the violin and recorder.

March 2024 - We held our Spring Concert at Bridgewater High School. Three concerts were held back to back which was the first time we trialled this format. The new layout meant that parents could more easily see their child which was very much appreciated.

April 2024 - For the first time, we offered a trip to our older players to see the National Youth Orchestra and National Youth Brass Band at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. This was such a treat for the children, and they even got interviewed by NYO and were featured in one of their promotional videos!

May 2024 - Our newly formed strings ensemble, led by Josh Monks, played their first performance at Proms in the Square in Warrington on May bank holiday. This was a community event attended by the local people, and was part of Warrington's music month.

June 2024 - Our Symphony and Chamber orchestras were part of the renowned Lymm Festival. They played music from popular films to the audience of parents and the community at Lymm United Reform Church.

July 2024 - We held our summer concert at Bridgewater High School. This year, we tried something different, and decided to have a 'beach party' theme. This was a huge success with the children really enjoying the lively and fun atmosphere.

In terms of the number of children at Warrington Youth Orchestra, we had 148 children in June 2023 and this rose to 154 by June 2024. The breakdown at June 2024 was as follows:

During 2023/2024, as well as membership subscriptions and funds raised at the concerts and other fundraising activities such as the Rotary Santa Float, we were supported by Accent Music Hub.

Regarding music teacher movements, Matt Shaw was promoted to Symphony conductor in September 2023 and Joe Mahin joined as the new beginners brass and joint concert band tutor. In April 2024, Paul Eaton McGuiness and Karl Thomlin stepped down as Chamber conductor and Pre Chamber Strings teacher respectively. They had both been part of the WYO family for many years and will be greatly missed. Georgina Hazell, one of our cover teachers, joined the team to help with Junior Strings and Pre Chamber Strings. Finally, in July 2024, Joe Mahin left to go back to the United States.

We wanted to say a special thank you to Catherine McQuillan for her amazing work organising the Hilden exchanges. This is an enormous task, taking up a huge amount of time and effort. We also wanted to say a special thank you to Donald Reid who continues to support WYO by repairing our instruments. Both Catherine and Donald had children at WYO, but they left some years ago, so we are especially thankful.
