Trustees Annual Report
1[st] April 2021 – 30[th] March 2022
Registered Charity Number: 1154710
Foreword
The year 2021/22 has seen yet more change and growth within the charity. In a challenging environment the charity has continued to deliver significant changes in the areas of policy around estranged young people, in Scotland, and nationally across the UK.
Most notably new data points have been created by government agencies to measure and track the numbers of estranged young people who enter higher education in Britain without the support of a family. This work has been assisted by strong partnerships with UCAS, The Scottish Funding Council and The Office for Students. This work was kindly supported by The Robertson Trust and Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.
Furthermore, in Scotland, all key political parties pledged in their 2021 manifestos to bring about parity of support between care experienced young people and estranged young people, who may not have been picked up by the care system. This has been supported by the commencement of Scottish government research into the barriers and difficulties that estranged young people face – the first of its kind in the UK, and carried out in collaboration with the charity.
The organization has continued to keep research and evidence at its heart, during this period it has put the experiences of estranged young people and indeed all estranged adults into more research papers. Most notably, the experiences of adults who seek support with estrangement was explored by the charity and Cambridge University and within this period has been published. Findings show the stigma that exists in disclosing ‘irregular’ family dynamics where contact is not present.
As well as this more broad research on the topic, the charity undertook a study to understand the impact of meeting others who had experienced estrangement in its support groups. This involved looking at the data collected by the charity associated with its support groups in London, Bristol, Brighton, Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield and HMP Coldingly and HMP Northumberland. This was carried out by academics at Edge Hill University.
The operations of a small charity would not be possible without the support of the Trustee board. The board were keen to understand any blind spots and employed NCVO to carry out a health check of our governance during this period. The review gave the organization a new energy at board level, with the impetus to bring in changes in how the board operates and better schemes of delegation. As a result the organization went on to recruit new Trustees, and new Chair was identified as Dr Kieran Breen stepped down after seven years of valued service.
I am immensely proud of the work of the team, volunteers and those who take part in our work. The charity is still the only place for estranged adults to find support.

Our charitable objects…
“To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people who are estranged from their family or members of their family from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. For the purpose of this clause ‘socially excluded’ means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of family relationship breakdown. To advance education among the public on the subject of family estrangement.”
Our mission statement…
We want to build a society where individuals who are estranged from family members feel accepted and understood, and have the freedom to live without experiencing judgement, stigma or disadvantage.
We will increase knowledge and awareness of family estrangement, and influence change for individuals and society by:
-
Creating and promoting research about family estrangement
-
Building greater awareness about family estrangement
-
Influencing and collaborating with policy makers and professionals
-
Delivering support to individuals who are affected by family estrangement or disownment
How do we define family estrangement?
People who are ‘estranged’ have little or no communicative relationship with their family or key family member. In some instances people may experience a sporadically communicative relationship, but feel estranged due to a sustained lack of emotional availability and engagement, which is needed to feel connected, supported, accepted, loved or included by family member(s).
In our work, the term estranged applies not only to people who have decided to cut-off communication from their family or family member, but to people who have been disowned or rejected by their family or key family member, and are therefore not permitted a communicative or emotionally engaging relationship.
The people we support self-define as estranged from their family or key family member.
