Aim and purpose

To provide a venue, base and coaching facilities to further the sport of fencing to all members of the community.

Objectives and activities

Newcastle Fencing and Sports Trust provides coaching in fencing and shooting to a wide variety of participants ranging from 4 year olds within our child development programme to veteran fencers (40+), plus numerous schools and community groups.

We provide a venue for other community groups, for example the Newcastle Fencing Club, Newcastle Pistol Shooting Club, Newcastle Pentathlon Club and Lindisfarne Fencing Club on a weekly basis.

We host a range of competitions; local youth and school, local senior development and British Fencing Ranking events.

Achievements and performance

We opened the Newcastle Fencing Centre, based in Benfield, Newcastle upon Tyne in January 2015. This was a result of hard work and fundraising from a dedicated team of volunteers and the generosity of our sponsor, Owen Pugh.

The Centre has provided a base for the fencing clubs; Newcastle Fencing Club and Lindisfarne Fencing Club and also for Newcastle Pentathlon Club since that date.

The year covered by this report saw some recovery in activity after the pandemic though the income for the Trust is still not back to normal levels.

Trustee Recruitment and Training

The Governing body requires breadth and depth of experience to carry out its duties effectively and efficiently. All five trustees continued to serve throughout the year.

Financial Review

Income generated by normal operations (non-grant income) increased from £25,854 in the previous year to £27,905. This level of income is depressed by the condition of the building. There were several flooding incidents during the year both from over-flowing gutters and the burst of one of the landlord’s water pipes. The latter incident gave rise to an insurance claim of £46,739 to cover damaged equipment of which £13,338 had been spent on replacements by the year end.

The landlord is well aware of the problems and we are negotiating a move into a smaller, refurbished space on the estate which will hopefully take place in the next financial year.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle Fencing Club has fallen into disarray as a result of the lack of willing volunteers to run and administer the club. It is hoped that the move to new, better premises will help the club re-launch. The club’s contributions towards the rent at £3,758 for the year, are still insufficient.

Service charges of £25,557 were paid in the year reflecting a partial catch up on the previous year.

Towards the end of the year in January 2024, the Trust’s only employee, the Coach, secured alternative employment and left the employment of the Trust. From this time onwards, coaching in local schools will not be possible.

A grant of £2,000 was received from the Sported Foundation during the year.

The Trust recorded a deficit of £321 at the end of the year.

The reserves are retained to further the aims and objectives of the charity.
