Aim and purpose
To provide a venue, base and coaching facilities to further the sport of fencing to all members of the community.
Objectives and activities
Newcastle Fencing and Sports Trust provides coaching in fencing and shooting to a wide variety of participants ranging from 4 year olds within our child development programme to veteran fencers (40+), plus numerous schools and community groups.
We provide a venue for other community groups, for example the Newcastle Fencing Club, Newcastle Pistol Shooting Club, Newcastle Pentathlon Club and Lindisfarne Fencing Club on a weekly basis.
We host a range of competitions; local youth and school, local senior development and British Fencing Ranking events.
Achievements and performance
We opened the Newcastle Fencing Centre, based in Benfield, Newcastle upon Tyne in January 2015. This was a result of hard work and fundraising from a dedicated team of volunteers and the generosity of our sponsor, Owen Pugh.
The Centre has provided a base for the fencing clubs; Newcastle Fencing Club and Lindisfarne Fencing Club and also for Newcastle Pentathlon Club since that date.
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Fencing Centre has been closed for most of the year covered by this report. During this period, normal operations, such as providing fencing coaching to local schools and the University, have not been possible.
The Trust has taken appropriate steps to ensure its survival, putting the Head Coach on furlough and applying for Coronavirus support grants where appropriate and possible. In addition, grant funding for specific projects has been sought, successfully in most cases. The Trust also made a claim on the insurance policy for Business Interruption which was unsuccessful.
The closure of the Fencing Centre provided an opportunity for some refurbishment of facilities (toilets and changing rooms) while the Trust has continued to acquire suitable equipment as opportunities have arisen to replace that which was damaged in last year’s flood.
A new website incorporating an e-commerce facility has also been developed, funded by grant-aid from Sport England. The website has been an outstanding success, attracting a wave of new recruits within the first few weeks of launch and in the absence of any advertising. The facility for participants to book and pay for sessions on-line is extremely valuable and greatly simplifies administration.
Trustee Recruitment and Training
The Governing body requires breadth and depth of experience to carry out its duties effectively and efficiently. All five trustees continued to serve throughout the year.
Financial Review
Income generated by normal operations fell by 85% from the previous year to £6,026 but was more than compensated for by grant income summarised below:

Part of the Sport England / Lottery grant was intended to fund the new website and e-commerce platform.
Well before the start of the present reporting period, the decision was taken to change the method of remuneration of the Head Coach. All coaching work was thus brought in-house with the Coach being paid a full, pensionable, salary instead of charging for coaching work as a self-employed contractor. The result has worked well, the total costs of Wages & Salaries, Expenses and Coaching increasing by only 2.8% over the previous year.
The remaining categories of expenditure remained more or less in-line with the previous year with the exception of Rent & Service where work to reconcile the account came to fruition and resulted in a substantial catch-up of previous un-paid or part-paid invoices, and Miscellaneous which includes £2,040 for refurbishment of facilities and £5,874 for the new website and e-commerce facility.
A total of £16,524 was spent on equipment and kit to replace that which was damaged by water ingress in January 2019. This is shown in Note 1: Fittings. It will result in a higher depreciation charge in following years.
The reserves are retained to further the aims and objectives of the charity.
