Introduction by the co-chairs of the Trustee Board
Welcome to the Annual Report for Tankerton FC Charitable Incorporated Organisation for August 2024 to July 2025, our financial and reporting year coinciding somewhat with the start and the end of the football season.
It is always interesting to look back and reflect on the highs and the lows of the past season to see where perhaps things might have gone a little better and also where we need to be extremely grateful for things that have turned out the way they have.
Once again there have been successes on the football pitch as detailed below and some fabulous contributions across the board none more so than those recognised at this years fun and presentation day again detailed below.
Behind the scenes the committees have been very energetic and resourceful in keeping everything going and making us all proud to be part of this impressive charity.
As Co-Chairs of Trustees our jobs are made so much more worthwhile and rewarding working with likeminded individuals only wanting what’s best for the club, charity and associated groups.
We thank both the Executive committee and all our fellow Trustees for their time and commitment this year in helping us make the club what it is and delivering another successful year on and off the pitch.
And thank you to all the volunteer coaches, their assistants, those that referee for the teams, linesmen and women and all the other brilliant volunteers that help everyone enjoy their football at Tankerton FC; the players wouldn’t be able to do it without you!
It was very pleasing to note that one of the Trustees, who has done so much for the charity, was recognised by Kent FA for her work with our wonderful pan-disability section. Vanessa Oakes was presented with The Coach of the Year - Disability Pathway award by the Chief Executive of Kent FA at a ceremony in Maidstone in July. Very well deserved indeed.
A special mention is also necessary to Dean Gonsalves who has been such a huge part of everything Tankerton FC since he joined the club especially this year after our Chief Exec or Chair of Football Dave McGovarin moved to Wales. We are informed that
he will himself be moving during 25/26 and he will be a huge loss to the club when he goes so there is a massive thank you from us for all that he has done and at present continues to do.
Jointly the Co-Chairs would also like to express our appreciation for all that another Trustee and member of the Executive does and has done this year. Terry Whyte sits on both committees and does a phenomenal amount. It is hard to list everything Terry does from cutting the grass to line marking to liaising with Seaview to negotiating for new containers and new toilet units on the new ground, talking to contractors, arranging for gates to be put in, planting numerous trees, to helping get our new borehole in place as well as helping with the nature reserve and so much more. It’s been a tough and frustrating year at times but Terry has helped drive a lot of things forward at the club. So a massive thanks is due!
Also thanks to our unsung hero Iggy Tapsell who does so much behind the scenes with assigning referees to games and being the focal point in providing information for opposition teams, as well as team photography and checking and writing articles about events etc (and more!)
And also this year we would like to extend our thanks to Kate Devis who has helped compile this Annual Report - it hasn’t been an easy task.
Here’s to continued success both on and off the field in the coming year for Tankerton FC CIO!

Executives Report
With our Chief Exec/Chair of Football Operations Dave McGovarin moving to Wales, and much of the day to day activity passed over to some of the long serving coaches, it’s a bit of a different report here compiled by members of the Executive Committee which was largely led by Dean Gonsalves over most of the season. Being Deans last presentation and funday with us, well we had to mark the occasion and everything Dean has done.
Here’s an extract from Dan Nevill’s tribute to Dean from the club on the day:
“It’s never easy saying goodbye to someone who’s made such a massive impact to this club not just on the pitch, but behind the scenes too.
So Dean please can I ask you to come up to the stage so we can recognise your contribution to the club and the huge hole you’re going to leave behind.
I’m told the first time Tankerton crossed paths with you was when our Chair, Tim, saw you helping out at an Arsenal summer soccer school. Yes… Arsenal. But don’t worry, we forgave you eventually. Because while you might back the Gunners, your heart has well and truly bled black and blue for Tankerton ever since.
When Tim found out you were local, he asked if you’d be up for giving the girls’ section a hand. It was just getting going at the time, run by a couple of students and needed someone to bring some structure, some direction and someone who knew what they were doing.
Well, the rest is history.
From those early days, you helped build the girls’ section into a thriving, winning part of the club. But it wasn’t just about trophies. You backed girls’ and women’s football when hardly anyone was paying attention to it. You gave it your time, your energy, and your belief.
We all know one of your proudest moments coaching at that belief was never more justified than when the girls team won’t the Kent cup…
You’ve made such an impact that the girls you coached continue to make an impact with the club, assisting with the development squad and continuing, because of you, to support this wonderful club.
And as if that wasn’t enough, you took on the role of club secretary, and basically ran the whole exec team like clockwork. The emails, the registrations, stepping in for Iggy as fixture secretary and doing the boring bits no one else wanted to touch: you just got on with it.
On top of that, you looked after the development squad, year in, year out. Thanks to you, we’ve got a solid pathway for our youngest players, giving them a proper start in the game and helping build the future of the club.
Dean, you’ve been an absolute rock. Quiet, dependable, always getting stuff done, not for the glory, just because it mattered.
==> picture [481 x 366] intentionally omitted <==
We honestly can’t thank you enough. What you’ve done for this club isn’t just about what we’ve won, it’s in every young girl who found her confidence through football, in every kid who got their start because the system was in place, and in everyone who’s seen what it really means to care about a grassroots club.
Now we would like to take the opportunity for a couple of coaches to say a few words; (Sam Burford and Chris Rowley said a few words)
Finally, we wanted to give you this gift as a token of our appreciation and wish you all the best with whatever comes next. And just remember—even if you support Arsenal, you’ll always be part of the Tankerton family.
Thanks, Dean. You’ll be missed.”
A great tribute to a really fantastic guy as Dan said he will be missed by us all.
The next sections pay tribute to the other coaches and volunteers and outline their successes over the season.
Thanks to everyone who make each and every team work so well!
Our pan-disability provision
Everyone is welcome at Tankerton Football Club (TFC) regardless of ability or impairment and the club’s focus remains firmly on community, accessibility and inclusion. We aim to reduce barriers to participation and inspire those with disabilities to be more active.
Adults pan-disability team
With coaching support from Inclusive Sport CIC and dedicated volunteers from Tankerton FC, our adult pan-disability team continues to thrive, enjoying weekly football sessions at the excellent facilities of the University of Kent.
The team was thrilled to secure second place in the Kent Disability League during their third season, an incredible achievement that reflects their hard work and passion. The monthly league

fixtures are a real highlight, offering players the exciting opportunity to compete against a variety of teams in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Children’s pan-disability team
Participation remains strong and the sessions continue to be thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. Thanks to funding from Canterbury City Council, the coaching team has been expanded. This growth allows coaches to maintain a personcentered approach, ensuring that each child receives the support they need to enjoy a fun, inclusive, and engaging football experience tailored to their individual needs

‘Females who Football’ – the Women’s Team
Our Wednesday night recreational woman’s team is fun, friendly & relaxed. Just turn up and play.
We are always looking to increase numbers to keep our team going. Numbers are picking up again after loosing a few players who have moved on to more competitive teams in the area. It’s great to know woman’s football is growing more popular in Kent. We want to keep our team relaxed and open to everyone, non competitive, all abilities and ages.
We vary in age from 16 to 50+ at the moment but always have the same smile on our face at the end of each session, some looking a bit more red and worn out than others.
So it’s come along and join in, bring a friend or make new ones. Have an hour of ‘me time’ enjoying some exercise and fun.
Summer training, Wednesday evenings 7-8pm at Seaview. Winter training Wednesdays at The Whitstable school 7.30-8.30pm.
Tankerton Football Club Youth Council 2025
The Youth Council at Tankerton FC meets quarterly and is made up of seven dedicated young people who play an active role in strategic decision-making. They work to improve communication between players, parents, and trustees, and most importantly, lead initiatives that directly benefit the club’s young players.
One of their standout achievements this year was raising an impressive £1,000 towards new changing room facilities at our future grounds. This was made possible through their confident and passionate presentation at a breakfast meeting with Chestfield Rotary, where they clearly explained the importance of these facilities to the development and wellbeing of our players.
In addition to this, the Youth Council played a key role in the club’s Presentation Fun Day in July. They not only attended and helped, but also organised a successful cake sale, further boosting funds for the club.
Continuing their incredible fundraising efforts, they also organised a sponsored keepy-uppy competition; another fun and engaging way to bring everyone together while supporting the club.
Please get in touch if you are between 13 and 21 years old and would like to be involved, with a view to influencing change and decision making within the club. Participants will be asked to feedback observations, ideas and improvements from their perspective to The Board.
Through producing newsletters, volunteering and training, this is a great opportunity to enhance a CV or support applications to study various sports subjects at colleges and universities. Many previous members have gained the skills and confidence to successfully pursue careers in sports coaching, PR and administration and work for clubs at County level and National FA’s.

The New Ground
Another hugely frustrating year for us regarding the new ground. You may or may not have seen much on the ground apart from the grass growing, but lots has been going on behind the scenes.
We did actually expect to have the pitches signed off fand ready or use at the last inspection but the weather over this last season 24/25 had a tremendous impact with lack of rain fall making the drainage channels sink very slightly in places leaving some surface rutting and a need for the contractor to comeback and address the issue during the autumn period. We have though despite the weather issues worked tirelessly with many people to try and get us on to the pitches for September 2025, but as we approached midsummer, it soon became clear that it was looking less likely we would make it for the start of the season, having had once again more than our fair share of setbacks.
As reported last year ISG, the large international company who were helping with the entrance roadway and car parking, went into administration. This left a big void: £1/4 million worth of input vanished.
We have been working with the council and the Football Foundation, trying to plug the gap. Our local MP is also involved. But it's been like wading through treacle - slow progress and reluctance to help fund the final piece. It has been so frustrating. Yes, some little movement, but not the sort of investment we would hope to see to get this fantastic community project over the line for the start of the new season.
==> picture [395 x 558] intentionally omitted <==
Canterbury City Council’s Head of Planning and KCC Highways have been helpful in the technical aspects of the entrance design and civil engineering complications, but these have all been predominantly passed now and the final stage is to run them past the KCC flood team to see if any of the spec needs tweaking. This has taken longer than anticipated as ISG had been funding the contract civil engineers who were helping and we lost that expertise when they folded.
That said, the firm that has taken over from ISG, Morris and Spottiswood (M&S), and the former
==> picture [405 x 228] intentionally omitted <==
ISG area MD who bought into M&S have been fantastic. Over the coming months, M&S will deliver adapted and newly fitted out changing rooms and a walkway from the industrial site car park to the ground. It has been agreed that the club can use the industrial site car park at the weekends and out
of hours during the working week.
Car parking on-site may take a bit longer to achieve, but with the use of the industrial site car park at the weekends, at least we can begin to use the new ground once the pedestrian access is established.
To go alongside the storage container already on-site, the new metal gates, and the new mower-tractor we have purchased, and with investment again from our own funds, you can expect to see a brand-new toilet block arriving soon and a borehole going in to help irrigate the pitches and provide water to the facilities. This is all in train and will be happening through September 2025.
==> picture [331 x 249] intentionally omitted <==
==> picture [309 x 199] intentionally omitted <==
We are also went out in late summer 2025 with two campaigns - one to try and get more partners on board to support our teams and help support the club generally from across the community, and secondly, a wider campaign to highlight our plight regarding the need for vehicular access and car parking on-site, which our previous partners were to provide before they went into administration. We actually made Meridian News and thanks to all those that took part in the TV Interview for the club including the U15 Girls.
So, lots has been to get the new ground ready for us to start using, but alas, not for the start of the new season. We will continue to use Seaview for the foreseeable future, which was always in our plans because of the number of teams, but we hope to allow some teams to play at least some of their matches on the beautiful new grass surfaces of the new ground over the course of the 25/26 season.

Colewood Nature Reserve
Some maintenance was undertaken in the early summer, but a significant amount of work is required to restore the reserve to its pre-pandemic state. Difficulty accessing the site along with the clubs main focus devoted to developing the new ground has contributed to the deterioration in the reserves condition. Attention needs to be given to re-energising The Friends of Colewood Nature Reserve - a fully constituted organisation with its own policies, codes of conduct, affiliations and insurance – as this body is responsible for undertaking the maintenance of the reserve.
==> picture [274 x 307] intentionally omitted <==
There needs to be a drive to recruit more volunteers to help with the pruning and to reestablish the pathways and enable easy accessibility. Some grant funding will be required to help with this and to repair some damage to a couple of the hides.
The motivation in establishing the reserve was to encourage young people, adults, those living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to interact with nature and each other. Hopefully it will act as a catalyst for developing cross-school friendships, for learning about nature and social responsibilities and for community interaction.
Tankerton FC Maintains Its England Football Accreditation Status
Tankerton FC successfully renewed its England Football Accreditation status during the 2024/2025 season. As part of this process, the clubs playing pathways were also assessed to determine its star rating once again, with clubs either assessed as 1 star, 2 star or 3 star and the club successfully renewed as a 2 star accredited club, which highlights the club offers multiple playing pathways. The club are just one of 75 clubs to hold 2 or 3 star Accredited Status across the county, which has over 650 clubs in total.
The renewal process last season involved ensuring the club readopt the FA policies and procedures around safeguarding children, safeguarding adults and reaffirming its commitment to the FA’s equality charter and the FA’s RESPECT codes of conduct. The renewal process also required the club to renew its declarations around holding regular committee meetings, having a bank account, and providing accounts.
The most important part of the accreditation renewal process is ensuring that all the coaches and volunteers within the club hold the correct qualifications for their roles and that they are upkeeping these. This includes all members of the clubs committee having an in-date DBS and safeguarding for committee members qualification, the club welfare officer holding the Welfare Officer Workshop qualification and all coaches holding an in date DBS check and FA Safeguarding children qualification, as well as at least one coach with every youth team holding a minimum of a FA Introduction to Coaching Football qualification (or equivalent) and FA Introduction to First Aid in Football qualification. The club had all of this in place very early on during the renewal window, thanks to the hard work from the Club Secretaries and Club Welfare Officer and were therefore able to submit their renewal in early November 2024, within a matter of days of the window
opening and well ahead of the end of March 2025 cut off deadline. The club’s renewal was again successful and approved by the Kent FA immediately.
In terms of what being accredited means, the club take huge pride in holding its accreditation as it is designed to show that club hits consistent standards and raises the bar to ensure its players can access the best of football in a well-run, high quality, safe and sustainable environment. It’s in place for clubs like ours to show that our infrastructure is sound, robust, efficient and effective and that as a club, we are built to last off the pitch.
The club is in a fantastic position heading into the next England Football Accreditation Renewal Window due to open in November 2025 for the 2025/2026 season and is expected to be able to renew its accreditation immediately once the window is open, to maintain its 2-star status. A huge thank you to the club committee and the club coaches for everything it does to maintain compliance and standards.
The club has also recently enrolled onto the FA’s Thriving Community Club Programme, part of the England Football Accredited offer, and this is a programme designed to support clubs to continue to develop and grow and ultimately ensure they are sustainable and fit for the future. The club has aspirations to become 3 star accredited and is actively engaging with the new programme to look at how it can continue to evolve and serve the community it proudly sits within.
Tankerton FC Supporting FA RESPECT and Positive Environment Initiatives
Tankerton FC took part in several FA RESPECT and Positive Football Environment Initiatives across the 2024/2025 season. The main initiatives the club supported were the Play Safe weekend in September 2024, which was designed to raise awareness around safeguarding in football and ensure football is
played in an environment where young players feel safe, included and supported by their clubs. The second initiative the club supported was the national silent support weekend that took place on the March 2025. The Silent Support Weekend was once again impeccably observed by parents, carers and spectators across the club as the side lines of games fell silent, with the emphasis placed on allowing the players to play free from instruction and pressure from those at the side of the pitch, encouraging the players to make decisions for themselves. The club continues to be a proud proponent of the FA’s ‘Respect the Standard’ campaign. The campaign saw the introduction of a new Grassroots Code in the 2024/25 season, which was designed to unite everyone across grassroots football by driving positive standards of behaviour we can all get behind.
The Grassroots Code includes Standards of Behaviour which ensure a positive football environment for all. At Tankerton FC we are fully supportive of the code and encourage all our members to familiarise themselves with the 5 pillars of the code, which are:
-
Enjoy The Game: We’re here to enjoy ourselves…win, lose or draw.
-
Give Respect: We always treat others as we’d like to be treated.
-
Be Inclusive: We embrace our differences…football is a game for everyone.
-
Work Together: We’re a team, on and off the pitch.
· Play Safe: We all have a role in safeguarding children.
The club looks forward to supporting further initiatives across the 2025/2026 season that ensure the game we all love remains fun, inclusive, fair and for all.
Structure, governance and management
As a governing body under the Charity Commission requires that the Trustees oversee the direction and governance of the club and are responsible for its financial management, ensuring its reputation is upheld, and that the charitable objectives of the club are carried out.
Whilst the Trustees delegate day-to-day football and operational matters to the Executive Committee, led by the Chief Executive (formerly the Executive Chairman), the Trustee Board retains overall legal responsibility and does not delegate beyond the extent provided for in the governing document or applicable legislation. The law describes charity trustees as “the persons having the general control and management of the administration of a charity” (Charities Act 2011).
Tankerton Football Club became registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation under Tankerton FC in May 2013 to allow the club to hold assets in its own name and to allow eligible youth players to be elected Trustees and contribute to the running of their club. The latest constitution in respect of this reporting year was issued on 25th January 2021.
The club is run on an unpaid voluntary basis. Day-to-day matters are dealt with by an Executive Committee which reports on a quarterly basis – and more regularly, as needed – to the Board of Trustees. The Trustees have the ultimate authority at the club.
Team Managers run their respective teams according to club rules and report to the Executive Committee.
Players, parents, grandparents, carers and guardians etc. make up the bulk of the associate membership of the club.
Anyone can become an associate member. Membership works on a subscription or donation basis. The club is also an FA Charter Standard Community Club affiliated to Kent FA and governed by the rules of the English FA. Public Benefit Statement: In planning and conducting our activities over the year we kept in mind the Charity Commissions guidance on public benefit and looked to align these activities against our objectives regularly at our quarterly Trustee meetings, our club’s monthly Executive meetings and throughout the season. This Annual Report outlines the activities and events the charity has undertaken throughout the year to deliver those objectives.

The Committees
The Charity Trustees have been driving an initiative to try and make volunteering a lot less onerous across the club and have been trying to put together a framework from which the charity and the football club and nature reserve can function better. New roles have been created and a structure set out. This is ongoing work and we hope to get a lot more volunteers on board to share the fantastic work that is being done behind the scenes and keep workloads to a minimum.
==> picture [317 x 314] intentionally omitted <==
Workloads itself is probably the wrong word to use as a lot of what is need to be done on a regular or even irregular as and when basis takes on an hour or so a week or a few hours a month.
So anyone with the slightest interest in any of the things on the wheel above is welcome to come and join us!
