Northern Butterflies provides a safe, healthy environment to flourish, grow, learn new skills and add value to their lives. Students who access the services we provide are vulnerable adults who have a learning disability, physical disability, suffering with their mental health and who are neurodivergent.
The activities we deliver have a positive impact upon the students and volunteers’ health and wellbeing we know this through conversations, regular meetings, impact stories to ensure students are engaged and all needs by attending are being met.

“Helped me improve my overall mental health development, confidence, and anxiety. I feel motivated doing activities such as arts and crafts and IT. I now help students on a Monday with maths. This has given me a sense of self-worth and more selfconfidence. I have made some lovely friendships here. I feel very safe and content at Northern Butterflies and I don’t feel like an outsider/weird and I feel myself and can be and act myself. Staff always support and help me. I always enjoy my time here and I happy here.”
“I have been a volunteer with Northern Butterflies for 3 years. I have mental health problems. It has brought my confidence up, I can manage my depression much better now, I am achieving things I would not have thought I could do. It is a safe place I can go to, and I can help everyone there. If butterflies were not here, I would go back to my old self, I feel I can help people with anything. It has given me so much.”
We draw upon what the student’s needs are and draw upon each success they have achieved locally; this all shapes the practice and the work moving forward. We also have students who have now completed accredited volunteer training and are supporting the maths tutor with learner support. The programme presently consists of weekly digital sessions, under the
umbrella of arts we have fine art, arts and crafts, textiles, everyday maths, everyday English, performing arts and monthly music sessions. Weekly horticulture sessions at the community allotment with ad hoc willow weaving sessions and recent courses in carbon sense.
We also embed regular sessions in the studio in meditation, yoga, aromatherapy.
Everyone has a voice in the programme, continuing our commitment to the local community and bridging the gap. There is a quite often a lot of word of mouth by sharing good practice through community events, exhibitions that we have attended. There are new friendships being created, training opportunities, up skilling and we continue to support those with mental health.
We are in year 2 of delivering Multiply, this consists of weekly maths sessions via Thriving Together. We are part of a partnership with thriving together delivering a varied provision. This has allowed us to expand and grow, employ new staff and continue to make a positive impact within the community.
## **1. Partnership**
We Continue to network and presently we are part of the Northumberland partner employment and are part of the work smart, live well monthly events at the hub in Cramlington. We are in a partnership with Thriving Together for delivery of multiply and adult education and collaborating working with Adapt and splinter group creating an advice, information, and guidance hub for people with autism. We are part of several partnerships, networking some of these include: DWP, Northumberland wildlife trust, Northumberland County Council, Artichoke trust, social prescribers.
