## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**
- The Sikh Helpline received a total of **4,480 calls in 2023** (3,760 in 2022). 68.2% of total cases in 2023 fell into 4 main categories as follows: 1. **Abuse (16.1%)** - The largest form of abuse logged was Domestic abuse
2. **Health Issues (15.8%)** - Largest category for cause of health issues was Alcohol abuse.
3. **Mental Health (15.6%)** - Largest category for mental health was Depression.
4. **Family/ Relationships and Marriage (20.7%)**
Below is a summary of some key activities, highlights and milestones during this period:
- Proactive activities to help increase the mental and physical health of people in the community. Sikh Helpline launched regular learn to ride cycling sessions with over 37 new riders who have learnt to ride with their family members and over 50 individuals regularly attending weekly sessions to connect with the local community.
- Digital inclusion ‘train the trainer’ course completed and the start of free safety online 1:1 workshops to help in digital inclusion within the community.
- ● Further developed partnerships / collaborations with Sandwell's Faith Communities for Clean Air, Aasra Trust for safe housing, Mencap and Black country housing Group.
- Posted mental & suicide prevention social media posts each day across the year.
- ● Training and upskilling volunteers and staff with completion of 12 certified courses including anxiety management, suicide training and domestic violence.
- Invited by West Midlands Young Combined Authority and Faith Strategic Partnership Group to be an exhibitor at the first Mental Health Youth Summit in July 2023. The summit was an opportunity for young people to share their lived experiences around mental health with faith leaders across the region, with the aim to explore the relationship between faith and mental health. Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands joined as a keynote speaker.
- Nominee shortlisted on community building award 2023 with British Sikh Awards

- Participated on 11th June climate change air quality interfaith 14 mile ride in Sandwell.
- Various outreach events attended across the country raising awareness of mental health and services offered to the community by Sikh Helpline. Some examples below:

- Nirmal Pure Mind event - February 2023, Coventry
- Preet Singh Kingfisher 50+ Punjabi group/club event - Sutton Coldfield Four Oaks
- Welfare seminar for international students in the UK - March 2023 - Khalsa Aid, Leeds
- Mental health and wellbeing awareness programme - March 2023, Leamington Spa
- Spiritual and Mental Health Event - March 2023, Ramgharia Sikh Temple, Graham Steet, Birmingham
- House of commons - April 2023
- Mental Health and Wellbeing Day – May 2023, Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick
- Eco Event - Shared free grants and understanding of methods to reduce negative impact on the environment including insulation and boiler grants. Held in West Midlands to connect the community with grants to manage home bills and heating alongside awareness of looking at eco-friendly alternatives to reduce negative impacts on the environment as well as saving the pocket – May 2023, Gurdwara Guru Har Rai, West Bromwich

## **SIKH HELPLINE Independent Examiners Report to the trustees of Sikh Helpline**
I report on the accounts of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation, Sikh Helpline (Charity Number 1154449) for the year ended 31 December 2023, which are set out on pages 8-11
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act
- have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. Accounting Policies**
## **Basis for preparing financial statements**
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standards for Smaller Entities (effective April 2008) and in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP), "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" published in 2005.
## **Incoming Resources**
These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:
- the charity becomes entitled to the resources;
- the trustees are virtually certain they will receive the resources; and
- the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.
## **Resources Expended and Liabilities**
Expenditure is recognised on an accrual basis as a liability is incurred. Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out the resources.
## **Tangible Fixed Assets**
Tangible fixed assets are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least £500. Depreciation is provided as follows:
