Introduction
2023 marked a record-breaking year for York Pride, with the festival reaching new heights in attendance, quality, and impact. From our expanded line-up and bustling festival stalls to a seamlessly executed Parade, this year’s Pride event was undoubtedly our biggest and best yet. It was a remarkable achievement, and a testament to the dedication, creativity, and hard work of our incredible team of volunteers.
With bold ambitions to grow the event further, York Pride 2023 proudly stood alongside some of the best free Pride events both locally and nationally. We also made significant strides in improving inclusivity and accessibility—introducing features such as an additional Mobiloo facility, expanded disability viewing platforms, BSL interpreters on stage, and improved tracking across the site. These enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to making York Pride a safe, welcoming, and celebratory space for all members of the LGBT+ community.
Financially, we are in a strong position, having surpassed £100,000 in income for the first time. This milestone brings new responsibilities—particularly around VAT administration—but also creates opportunities to invest in tools and technology that will support our continued growth.
The Parade, always a highlight, ran smoothly thanks to the meticulous planning of our volunteer organisers. Meanwhile, a committee restructure in the autumn created a more harmonious and efficient working environment—laying solid foundations for the future.
We were also pleased that, despite a more powerful sound system, careful management ensured not a single noise complaint was received. However, we remain mindful of the evolving challenges ahead—including rising costs and the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis—which could affect both our income and expenditure in 2024.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors—particularly our main sponsor and partner, Aviva—and of course, the dedication of our volunteer committee. Whether long-serving or new this year, every member’s contribution has been vital in delivering one of the most vibrant and inclusive Pride events in the country.

About York Pride
York Pride is a registered charity which aims to promote equality, diversity, and advances in education, in order to eliminate discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.
York Pride raises awareness of LGBT issues by promoting and staging events, taking part in campaigning and commentary in the media, and providing support to other LGBT charities and voluntary organisations. We also promote the provision of information, advice, and support that celebrate LGBT lives and history. We aim for York to be a place where everybody knows that the diversity offered by the LGBT community is something to be celebrated and in which LGBT people can feel safe and accepted.
We believe that inclusiveness improves the self-esteem and provides a sense of belonging, which helps to diminish the psychological effects of discrimination faced by individuals in daily life.
Our summer Pride event, which takes place within a Pride festival week, provides our main platform for a celebration of the diversity of the LGBT community in a context of entertainment, inclusivity and fun. The event is a focus for the visibility of the LGBT community in York and provides an opportunity to draw attention to important LGBT issues.
York Pride is operated by a small team of unpaid volunteers who are working hard to continue to improve Pride for the benefit of the LGBT and wider community. We depend upon sponsorship, donations from events, local businesses and supporters and money we raise through our fundraising activities.
We are always keen to improve what we do and to be welcoming to all members of the community. If you have any comments or feedback or would like to get involved in any way, we would love to hear from you.

Chair’s Report – 2023
York Pride 2023 has without doubt been our biggest to date, the festival, Stalls, Line Up and attendance all exceeding past records which was a fantastic achievement by the team.
This year we had strong ambitions to continue to step up our lineup, size and quality of event, when you look around at other free pride events both locally and nationally we are up there as one of the best, this is something everyone should be super proud about.
I’m sure Colin will be giving more specifics but i’m pleased to say our financial position remains strong and our income has now passed the £100k mark which is incredible! Whilst this will create extra burden of admin around VAT for the future I’m sure we can make this pain free with the investment in the right technology for the job!
The Parade, often the highlight for many, ran smoothly thanks to the diligent organisation of David M, Simon and the team.
We also continued on our journey to make York Pride more inclusive and accessible than ever before this year we added an additional, Mobiloo - A Mobile Accessible Toilet, extra tracking around the site & larger disability viewing platform. We also had BSL signers on stage throughout the day including when acts were performing. Whilst we celebrate these successes we also acknowledge things can be improved it’s important we continue to push for greater inclusion and seek help and support where possible to deliver this. To ensure York Pride is inclusive for all members of the LGBT+ community.
I’m pleased to say the restructure carried out in the autumn time to the committee and the roles has been very successful and has made for a much more harmonious and enjoyable experience for all involved.
Our worries around noise were unfounded and thanks to careful management and monitoring we didn’t receive a single noise complaint during our event, Despite us having a bigger sound system for our main stage. This js something we still need to pay close attention to and as our event grows our health and safety and internal policies and procedures need to grow with it.
We should also remain mindful with cost of living crisis and continued inflation this has the potential to hit us hard on potential revenue streams and also costs for 2024. We have managed this very well this year but the potential for a large drop in income or continues rises in costs remains.
Of course i’d also like to thank all our Sponsors including our Main Sponsor and Partner Aviva!
Finally i’d like to finish the same way I always finish and that’s thanking all of this years committee, whether you’ve been doing this since 2009, or 2023, whether this has been your first or your last year for the moment, your contributions, big and small, are what makes us

collectively a fantastic team and event in these trying times a force to be reckoned with and in my opinion one of the best Pride events in the country.
Financial Review
York Pride remains in a strong financial position. This is due to the hardwork and dedication of the committee and trustees.
Our aim is to have enough is reserve to be able to afford the next years Pride event, should some unforeseen circumstances effect us such as loss of major sponsor, weather related issues such as loss of income on the day due to rain and lower attendance.
