A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO A Message from our CEO
==> picture [114 x 114] intentionally omitted <==
Dr Steve Smith
The need for KEYS continues to be massive. There are well over half a million people in England alone who are physically dependent upon alcohol and hundreds of thousands more misuse alcohol in a hazardous way. In fact, alcohol misuse is one of the top five risk factors in ALL cases of death, ill health and disability in our society.
And then there’s drug use.. it’s an enormous and painful problem! But as the KEYS Project enters its tenth year, I am both massively encouraged by all that we have achieved and truly excited by the prospect of continued and significant growth.
This year alone:
-
We’ve seen our clients’ quality of life score increase by 133% on average
-
We’ve established 5 new centres across England and Wales and relaunched one that had been unable to operate since the pandemic
-
We’ve continued to host nationwide support groups twice a week, on top of each centre’s local work
-
We welcomed 37 new volunteers, many of whom have been through the KEYS recovery programme themselves
-
We’ve conducted 4 in person training days and volunteers have completed 210 training modules
-
Our management team have graduated from a two-year incubator programme, developing critical operational skills to prepare us for an upcoming period of substantial organisational growth
-
We’ve formed new, key strategic partnerships, enabling us to expand the programme and depth of support we can offer clients, delivering forgiveness education training in 6 centres
-
We also held 2 celebration sessions, to acknowledge some of the incredible recovery journeys already taken
God has undoubtedly blessed KEYS and we have a truly great team of staff and volunteers, who are wonderfully supported by our faithful trustees and donors. As we work together to break the chains of addiction, it is a delight to continue to hear stories and testimonies as more men and women find true freedom and lasting sobriety through our work.
It is also exciting to be on the verge of potentially explosive growth as more enthusiastic teams join us from towns and cities across the country. Furthermore, we're beginning meaningful collaboration with both hospital and community agencies in the upcoming year - who themselves are struggling to meet the increasing burden of addiction across our society.
Despite the challenges we face, I have no doubt that you will also be encouraged as you read this report. I thank you for taking time to read this and for your interest in KEYS. My thanks also to all those who tirelessly uphold this work through their practical, financial and prayerful support. And my thanks especially, to our glorious God, who gives us the privilege of sharing His love for the broken.

Dr Keron Fletcher Chair of Trustees
In Matthew’s gospel chapter 11, Jesus gives out the most wonderful invitation anyone could ever wish to receive. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Who else, in the history of mankind, has ever given such an invitation, or had the ability to provide rest to the weary and burdened?
Jesus goes on to say, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Who wouldn’t want to take off an ill-fitting, chafing yoke and swap it for one that is comfortable, fits well, and is “easy”? Who wouldn’t want to swap a crippling, oppressive burden for one that is “light”?
The KEYS teams spread across churches in the UK, strive to help people wearied and burdened by addiction. Through their support, care, help, medical aid and prayers, the whole team both on the front line and behind the scenes works to achieve this goal and where it is invited, point those in need to the One who can give rest for their souls.
Welcome to Rachel de Jongh, Jo Harris and Lily Waters who have joined the Head Office team. Welcome to those new churches who have joined KEYS in the last 12 months. May everyone involved in KEYS know the help and strength of our Lord as you strive on behalf of those who are weary and burdened by addiction.

“Each year we see the impact that The KEYS Project is having, not only on the lives of those they support but also on families and communities they belong to. This year, the growth and development for KEYS has been unprecedented and I am greatly encouraged to know that this growth means more and more people have access to this life changing recovery support. I am thankful for all the teams, their dedicated volunteers and the churches and organisations who partner with KEYS to continue this vital work.”

Laura Waters
Operations Director
Welcome to our Annual Report, which gives an overview of the year's achievements, milestones, and the impactful work undertaken by KEYS Community Detox in our ongoing commitment to transforming lives through our powerful recovery support programme, including detoxification from drugs and alcohol.
Over the past year, KEYS has continued to be a beacon of hope and a lifeline, offering a path for individuals seeking recovery from addiction. We understand that addiction is a pervasive issue with deep-seated roots. Subsequently, our multifaceted approach and dedication to creating a safe, supportive and compassionate environment for individuals on their journey to freedom from addiction remains resolute.
We aim to share this journey with you through these pages. This report will provide you with an insightful glimpse into our operational activities, strategies, and outcomes, highlighting the tireless efforts of our teams, the remarkable stories of those who have found hope and freedom through the KEYS programme and the progress we've made in addressing the complex challenges of an expanding and developing charity.
The success of the programme is intertwined with your unwavering support, which empowers us to make a lasting impact. Together, we strive to create healthier and more vibrant communities, where addiction is met with understanding, care, and evidence-based solutions.
Thank you for standing with us on this journey, and we invite you to explore the pages that follow to witness the change we've ignited within KEYS Community Detox and the lives we've touched.
With gratitude and determination,
Laura
OUR MISSION AND VALUES
Our mission at KEYS is to equip churches and Christian organisations to reach their communities and support those struggling with addiction to find freedom. This support is given through the three “keys to recovery” that our programme provides: community, spiritual and medical support.
Our programme is Christ-centred, practical, and relational. We provide holistic support to address addiction, its emotional or spiritual root causes, and the ongoing impact it can have, bringing hope, healing, and lasting freedom. Our work is client-driven - we work with individuals, their local church, and their existing support networks to provide support tailored to their needs, through every stage of the recovery journey. This enables us to see lives saved and transformed, relationships restored, and helps people find new hope for the future.
6
HOW WE DO IT
We support people both when they are in the full grip of their addiction with individual recovery planning, mentorship and liaison with their drug/alcohol services, as well as when they have achieved abstinence, offering one-to-one support through our Christian-adapted 12-step recovery programme.

Community key
-
Being part of a loving, supportive community is vital to maintaining freedom from addiction. We work with the individuals’ own support network as well as connecting them with others in recovery and with their local church. The journey to freedom can be long and we remain engaged in the long term.
-
Through a Christian-adapted 12-step programme, one-to-one support and recovery mentoring via experienced peer mentors.
-
Our Befrienders also connect individuals with services such as financial advice, housing support, foodbanks, employment or volunteering opportunities to counter the disadvantages often connected to addiction. This increases the chance of lasting recovery.
We also offer open online support meetings and prayer check-ins twice a week.
Spiritual key
-
The heart of our approach is not only to address the symptoms but to help individuals work through the deeper issues at the root of their addiction - engaging in a spiritual route to recovery, rooted in God’s unconditional love.
-
Offering prayer ministry when desired, we support individuals to find inner healing as a key part of their ongoing freedom. Whilst we support those who are seeking a spiritual route to recovery, there is no requirement for individuals to be Christian.
Medical key
-
KEYS offers an advocacy and liaison service for our clients and our detox programme can be provided by centres across the country. Developed by our medical team of expert NHS professionals, our proven protocols support our clients in stabilising and safely reducing their alcohol or drug consumption on a path to abstinence.
-
The programme is delivered by trained volunteers, in liaison with the individual’s own GP and/or drug service and overseen by our medical team.
-
We also offer alternative high-level support, developing individual recovery plans for people, advocating for them, if need be, to access relapse-prevention medication. We also make use of alcohol/drug testing.
7
OUR IMPACT THIS YEAR
==> picture [388 x 548] intentionally omitted <==
We are partnered with thirteen centres across the country and have established four new partnerships this year, alongside our online National Recovery Group (NRG). Our full recovery programme supports an individual to journey through readiness for recovery including:
individual recovery assessment and planning
-
supported controlled reduction plans for substance and alcohol misuse where required and appropriate recovery foundations supporting those in early recovery
-
12-step mentoring to support and maintain long term recovery
The programme can be accessed by anyone at any stage of their recovery journey.
8
-
We have had 64 referrals this year, by individuals themselves, professionals and family/friends. 50 have been assigned to a centre and the remainder have been referred to the NRG, been given advice or signposted to other services.
-
We have had over 1500 attendances at our recovery groups nationwide this year.
-
13 people have undergone a controlled alcohol reduction programme.
-
Over 20 clients participated in structured spiritual support sessions, some of whom engaged with multiple sessions and several others engaged with other church based support.

The KEYS Project employs a comprehensive Client Outcome Assessment Tool (COAT) to systematically evaluate the Quality-of-Life improvements resulting from addiction treatment and recovery support. The COAT assesses 10 key dimensions of Quality of Life that are particularly affected by addiction, widely recognised in the field of drug and alcohol services.
Through our KEYS Detox programme this year, we have seen an average client quality of life improvement score of 133% .

“Through early recovery and abstinence, the KEYS National online group has become a regular part of my journey. The hosts are committed to their roles and its good to have that familiarity. The online group gives everyone the opportunity to check in and it's good to feel included because we are all seeking to maintain a sober lifestyle. It has helped me open up and the scriptures are often thought provoking. I have attended these meetings throughout different life experiences and emotions. I feel comfortable and reassured that I can attend without feeling judged.”
Client and NRG attendee
Tracy, one of our trustees, faithfully leads our weekly online ‘check in and pray’ session. This group is accessible to all and is an opportunity to connect with a supportive recovery community towards the end of the week, pray and enjoy connection and reflection. The aim of the group is to encourage each other to draw closer to God and to pray together about struggles and concerns that may have come up during the week. Clients often express how they feel more at peace at the end of the session, and it is a privilege to be able to share this time together.
==> picture [102 x 102] intentionally omitted <==
“I came to KEYS recovery about 6 months ago and started attending the online groups which filled the void I was feeling, trying to do recovery but without God. KEYS recovery was different to other recovery programmes I had tried before as adding scripture to the meetings was powerful and I can always feel God's presence in the meetings. I started working through the 12-Step work with KEYS, which helped me have a stronger relationship with God but also helped me see where and why I was reverting back to old patterns that I am now aware of. From personal experience, after putting the drink down, I was left with a lot of trauma and unresolved past issues. KEYS Recovery step work has helped me through this and has led me on to having a passion to help others with addiction and domestic abuse and share what God has done and how He has helped me get to where I am today. I am very grateful to KEYS and everyone who is part of it.”

Recovery Celebrations 2023
Two Recovery Celebrations were hosted this year in Horsham and Seaford, with nationwide participation via Zoom. It was great to gather together for a time of testimony and celebration. Acknowledging progress is critical to the recovery journey and these events were inspiring as people shared stories. We are looking forward to our first recovery celebration in the North at the end of 2023. It has been heartening to witness individuals who were once beneficiaries of our projects remaining connected and providing peer support, inspiring hope to others on their journey to recovery.
==> picture [184 x 149] intentionally omitted <==
“KEYS has helped me not only in the early stages of my recovery, showing me God's grace as I resisted the change, but, like true friends and followers of Jesus, the team have held my hand through every step of my journey. I am now coming up to 12 months clean and sober thanks to their support!”
KEYS client - Sussex
Spotlight on Keighley
This year has also seen centres join together to provide new offerings...
In August, a remarkable collaboration took place at a Sussex farm, where two of our KEYS Centres converged. During this period, our dedicated team provided support to achieve abstinence for four clients from our Keighley centre who would once have described themselves as street drinkers.
Throughout this process, campfire recovery groups were organised, uniting our Keighley clients with members of the Sussex KEYS recovery community for mutual peer support and encouragement. The cohesion and dedication of our teams was evident as they diligently delivered KEYS early recovery interventions and crafted comprehensive follow-up recovery plans for the participants.
Upon their return home, the Keighley team continued to provide invaluable support. They assisted two of the men, who were without suitable housing, to secure appropriate accommodation and the necessary financial resources for their transition. These individuals have now found stability in their new homes and are diligently working on their paths to recovery, embracing newfound freedom and a transformed life. Importantly, all participants maintain a strong connection with and active involvement in the Keighley KEYS recovery community.
The heart-warming outpouring of love and support from both the Sussex and Keighley communities, as well as dedicated volunteers, was truly overwhelming. This encompassed acts of kindness such as providing nourishing meals, offering haircuts and chiropody services, donating essential computer equipment for programme participation, arranging trips to the seaside, engaging in field games, donating tents and clothing, and the generous hospitality of the farm hosts who graciously opened up a peaceful and beautiful space for these endeavours. This exemplifies the remarkable synergy of God's church in action.
This inspiring collaborative effort underscores the positive impact that can be achieved when communities unite to support individuals on their journey to recovery, ultimately reaffirming the power of compassion and collective action.

CENTRE UPDATES
-
We have formed four new partnerships with churches and organisations: KEYS Morecambe, KEYS Norwich, Voice of Hope Stoke (our second KEYS centre in Stoke), and KEYS Swansea. We eagerly anticipate the growth and impact of these KEYS Centres in their respective communities.
-
Centres established and nurtured last year in Keighley, Stoke, Seaford, and Preston have demonstrated exceptional progress, offering recovery groups and providing comprehensive support through delivering the full KEYS programme.
-
The Head Office team have enjoyed being able to deliver three in-person training days in Stoke, Keighley and Chesterfield and to meet the local teams. These training days have greatly enhanced what these centres can offer to the clients they support.
We’ve recruited thirty-seven new volunteers.
- We’ve been able to support people across Eastbourne as dedicated teams in Hailsham and Seaford have come together to create an additional group, addressing a keen need for faith-based recovery options in the town. We extend our gratitude to the Kingdom Way Trust for their support in providing an ideal location for this initiative.
We have supported the relaunch of an in-person recovery community in Brighton.
‘From a church leader’s point of view, KEYS Community Detox really is an answer to prayer. We have people in our community with addiction issues and many find it really difficult to get detox from local authorities because of the sheer volume of people needing it. The fact that we now do have the tools to help people stop drinking ourselves, and have helped a number break free from their addiction has been wonderful. And then of course we also now have a community to bring them into - a recovery community which has Christ at the centre and that has made all the difference. As a recovered alcoholic myself, I know how important it is to have the spiritual side of the programme.’
Rev Malcolm Mycock - St Johns Welcome Centre Stoke
National Online Recovery Group
The KEYS National Recovery Group is an online recovery community that meets every Tuesday evening on Zoom for mutual support, encouragement and for the discussion and application of key recovery ideas and tools. This is always facilitated by an experienced member of the KEYS team. The content of the National Recovery group is based on biblical and 12-step principles with plenty of opportunity to explore how we connect faith to sobriety and ongoing recovery in a way that is truly effective and sustainable.
In the three and a half years that the NRG has been operating, a number of people have started their recovery journey in the online group, going on to sustained sobriety, increased faith and connection. A number have also gone on to become core members and mentors with KEYS. Others have found the group to be a lifeline at challenging moments in early recovery, knowing there is a community not connected to their locality but with people ready to listen, support, pray and help them to find the help that they need. We have been delighted with the feedback from NRG participants on the difference it has made to their recovery journeys.

OUR STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS
Ashburnham Memorial Tree
We have been blessed by the hospitality and support of Ashburnham Christian Trust and are particularly grateful to them for allowing us space to plant a memorial tree in loving memory of members of our KEYS community who were dearly loved and deeply missed. Loved one and friends are welcome to visit the prayer labyrinth in the beautiful and peaceful grounds of Ashburnham where the tree is planted.

Cinnamon Network
Following on from the update in the midterm report, our management team have completed the two-year Cinnamon Network incubator programme, building critical organisational knowledge across finance, HR, governance, leadership, marketing and promotion.
==> picture [175 x 67] intentionally omitted <==
This will be integral as we grow over the upcoming year and has proven to be a well-timed and valuable endeavour. We have benefitted greatly from connecting with peers also running other social action projects across the country and have signed up for the Alumni Stream in 2024.
Big Green Heart
We understand that at the root of addiction there is so often deep emotional pain. Addressing this pain, dealing with resentments and the lasting scars of painful life experiences plays a significant part in finding freedom from addiction. The Big Green Heart is a very effective, gentle and supportive tool that KEYS has adopted. It can be used effectively by people who have a Christian faith and also by those who don’t.
==> picture [234 x 114] intentionally omitted <==
KEYS volunteers have accessed training to become practitioners in the Big Green Heart (BGH). We are thankful to The Big Green Heart for their thorough and robust training, support to our volunteers, the sessions our clients have been able to access and for their partnership and collaboration with KEYS.
Live From Rest
==> picture [65 x 71] intentionally omitted <==
Live from Rest is a resource to support people to develop the practice of mindfulness and meditation, widely recommended by Mental Health Practitioners and key to 12-step recovery work. We are delighted to have partnered with Live from Rest as this will help strengthen the recovery focused content on Live From Rest and will enable us to share helpful resources between KEYS and Live From Rest.

ISAAC International
==> picture [64 x 64] intentionally omitted <==
We are now a member of ISAAC International (International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition). This connection is incredibly beneficial for our growth in the addiction and recovery field. This August, members of our HQ team attended ISAAC training with a view to developing this useful training resource for our Centre Managers to access as part of their continued professional development.
We are keen to continue to be part of the ISAAC regional networks as we believe these connections will enhance our local partnerships with other Christian organisations, providing support in both the North and South of England.
Jubilee Plus
Jubilee Plus is a national charity with a mission to equip UK churches to change the lives of those in poverty in their communities. We remain grateful for our connection with Jubilee Plus who continue to inspire and equip us to support and serve those in our communities who are often marginalised.

THE YEAR AHEAD
As we embark on the next financial year, we carry with us a sense of hope and anticipation, especially for those individuals we support on their recovery journey. The upcoming year promises exciting opportunities as our new centres take root, and our existing ones mature and expand. KEYS is poised to journey alongside more individuals than ever before.
We are dedicated to meeting the increasing demands as a growing and thriving charity, continually refining our strategy to navigate the evolving landscape. With growth comes new opportunities in diverse areas, accompanied by fresh challenges. To address these challenges, we will continue to develop comprehensive strategies.
Annually, we review our policies and procedures, focusing on specific areas to achieve excellence. Our 2024 goals include:
-
Operational Guidance and Policy: Further developing our volunteer training programme and guidance to ensure volunteers are well-equipped, confident, and supported, catering to diverse learning styles and professional backgrounds.
-
Service Delivery: Building upon our client recovery pathway, ensuring that each client who wishes to do so, can take advantage of all aspects of the full KEYS programme. Advancing our protocols and systems to excel in record-keeping, ensuring consistency and maintaining high-quality service delivery for an enhanced client experience.
-
Safeguarding: Striving for excellence in safeguarding vulnerable adults, ingraining it into the very fabric of who we are. Our goal is to create exceptionally safe spaces for individuals to heal and thrive.
-
Equality and Diversity: Ensuring accessibility for all, with a special focus this year on those with learning needs. Our commitment to equality and diversity remains unwavering.
In addition to these focused projects, keep an eye out for our upcoming new brand identity and the reveal of our new KEYS Project logo.
Finances and Fundraising
As we grow and continue to endeavour to meet the ever-increasing need of addiction support, so our funding needs grow. Our strategy for this year focuses on becoming less dependent on grant funding. Whilst our fundraising target for 2023-2024 is £84,400 and we will be seeking grant funding, we want to be able to grow a more stable and secure funding source of regular individual donations alongside other new funding options.
We intend to launch a new fundraising campaign with a focus on increasing regular individual donations. Our QR code can be used to help supporters set up a donation. The KEYS Project website will soon be developed to make it easier for supporters to undertake fundraising activities on our behalf. We are set up as a charity for Go Fund me campaigns and Facebook birthday fundraisers that anyone can undertake on behalf of KEYS. Our head office team are equipped and able to help anyone create a fundraising campaign.

OUR HEARTFELT GRATITUDE
As we reflect on the past year, we extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors, grant funders, and partners who have been pillars of support for KEYS. Your generous commitment to our work has made a profound impact, enabling us to carry out our mission and make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve. Your financial support has been instrumental in bringing hope, healing, and opportunities to individuals in need. It is through your generosity that we can continue to grow and make our programme available in new locations.
To our donors, who faithfully contribute to our work, your contributions, whether big or small, have collectively formed the backbone of our success.
To our grant funders, who have recognised the value of our endeavours, thank you for entrusting us with the resources to bring about meaningful change.
To our partners and to our volunteers, partner churches and organisations who stand beside us in our endeavours, thank you for your dedication, collaboration, and collective efforts. Together, we have forged strong alliances that enhance the impact of our work.
We thank those who pray with us and for us. This forms the foundation and bedrock from which our work flows.
As we express our gratitude, we also acknowledge the responsibility that comes with your trust. We are committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that we steward our resources well and efficiently to fulfil our mission.
In the coming year, we look forward to continuing this journey together, united in our commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. Once again, thank you for making it possible.
We extend a special thanks to all the children of Lottie’s family who chose, in their grief, to do a sponsored walk to benefit KEYS in loving memory of Lottie, a mum, auntie, nana, sister and daughter. Please join us in continuing to pray for them.
Thank YOU
