Structure, Governance and Management
Liquid Listening is a limited company (no 07344059) and a charity (no 1154224) governed by its memorandum and articles incorporated 28 July 2010 as amended by special resolution registered as Companies House on 2 September 2013 and 31 August 2023.
The Trustees are responsible for monitoring the charity’s activities, overseeing governance and ensuring the charity meets its aims and objectives. New Trustees are elected by existing Trustees based on their previous experience. They meet at least four times a year.

Objectives and Activities
Co-Founded by Adele Drake and Joel Cahen, Liquid Listening aims to increase the well being of children with special needs and explore ways to promote their education and health, increased awareness and meaningful involvement with their environment.
Liquid Listening achieves this by providing underwater listening sessions for children with special and complex needs and training for their carers.
Achievements and Performance and Financial Review
During the year ended 31 August 2024 incoming resources from listening sessions, training and donations was £90,190 (2023: £102,781). Charitable activities expenditure was £63,258 (2022: £54,158). Governance costs were £32,815 (2022: £25,697). Resulting in a deficit for the year of £5,883 (2022: £22,926 surplus).
We are delighted to report that we have had a third year of increased activity this year, after the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/21. The now-established team of Joel, Alice and Judith is working well and this is paying dividends in terms of the numbers of schools, teachers, individual practitioners we can reach, and the numbers of disabled children benefiting from our work.
During the year, we were able train seven new schools in Musical Hydrotherapy, as well as completing the training of another two who had commenced theirs the previous year. The schools included St Nicholas in Canterbury, which had been one of the very first schools we worked with when still developing our work, as well as being able to renew another early relationship with Heron Academy (previously Michael Tippett School). Other schools in England include Ivy House in Derby (one of those we first worked with through our Arts Council tour in 2022), Dee Banks in Chester and Fox Wood in Warrington. Our first school in Wales, Ysgol Maes y Coed was trained in May, whilst two schools in Glasgow, Ashton Secondary and Croftcroighn Primary also received training.

A new initiative for the 2023/24 year was to offer a Musical Hydrotherapy training course for individual practitioners. Held in October 2023, three individuals attended and will all complete their training, including equipment installation back in their “home” pools. Undertaking this project was a learning experience for us as we worked for the first time with practitioners not working in specialist schools. We were pleased to train two people from a swim school and a third person based in Northern Ireland, completing our tour of the four nations this year!
Thanks to the membership scheme launched last year, we delivered three refresher sessions at Valence School in Kent, Bedelsford School in Kingston and Marjorie McClure School in Bromley to help support the on-going delivery of Musical Hydrotherapy in the schools. Two other schools booked refresher training but cancelled at short notice and we have worked to address how to try to avoid this happening in future.
The music production strand of Liquid Listening’s programme is also gaining in strength and this year, thanks to funding from the Margaret Engering Music Trust, we were able to visit both Fox Wood and Dee Banks schools to work with pupils in the summer term, resulting in informal performances and the creation of music tracks for use in the school pool and classroom. Support for music within the schools we work with is an emerging area of work that we will continue to address in future.

Independent Examiner’s Report
Report to the trustees/ Charity Name members of Liquid Listening On accounts for the year 31 August 2024 ended Set out on pages 6 to 8 (remember to include the page numbers of additional sheets) I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the year ended 31 August 2024. Responsibilities and As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the basis of report accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Liquid Listening is a private company limited by guarantee incorporated in England and Wales. The registered office is 28, Broad Street, Wokingham, Berkshire, RG40 1AB. For the year ended 31 August 2023 the company was entitled to exemption from audit under section 477 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.
The directors acknowledge their responsibilities for complying with the requirements of the Act with respect to accounting records and the preparation of financial statements.
The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its financial statements for the year in question in accordance with section 476.
These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with SORP 2005 and in accordance with FRS 102.

ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The following accounting policies are used consistently with items that are considered material in relation to the charity's accounts:
Basis of accounting: The accounts are prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income and expenses: The income and expenses are stated using the "accrual" concept in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice for charity accounts.
Depreciation : Depreciation is provided at an annual rate of 15% on all tangible fixed assets under the reducing balance method.
