Structure, Governance and Management
The charity, number 1154209. operates as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) by
a constitution dated 1 Odober 2013. Education Uganda previousty operated as registered
charity 1121842 under a trust deed dated 24 September 2007. All the assets of the okl
charity were transferred to the new charity Wbth effect from 1 January 2014 and the old
charity was dissolved duriNJ 2014.
Trustees have been appointed for their educational. financial and fundraising skills. They
serve for a period of from one to three years when they then stand for re-election. A Child
Protection Policy is in place.
Policy decisions are made by the trustees who generally meet four times a year for this
purpose, although this meets'ng pattem has been disrupted during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Operab'ng decisions in Uganda are made by a local management Committee who are
directed by the trustees to work within an agreed plan arvj budget and report regularty to the
trustees.
Objectlvos and Acilvftle8
The Objectives of the Charity are:_
the improvement and development of primary education. indLKling t8ach8r training,
for the benefrt of children of Prim￿ school age. their families and the wider
communty in Afnca and, in partscular. Uganda (which is the Charity's ar88 of benefit).
b)
the relief of financial hardship and unemployment by assisting in the provision of
education, training, w0￿$hOp$ and other stth s8rvtces as th8 trust88s deem
appropriate so as to improve the condrtions of lrfe of persons INirg in Uganda.
The principal adimty of charity is thè improvement of primary educatlon In Uganda by the
use of individual children's blackboards, known as slates,. a technique that has been used so
successfully to rai88 standards in English primary schools.
Publlc Benefft
The beneficiaries of the charty are prlmary school chI￿ren in the nearly 600 schools withln
the Kasese region of South West Uganda 800/0 of the population live at or below
povety ￿Ve1 and prlmary school Clas￿ can reach 100 pupils. The charity believes that
social and economic improvements in Africa have to be thrO￿h education arKI the potential
of the approach we are taking enormous.
A¢hlovam•nt and Pèrforniancè
The team in Uganda have continued to support and develop the 52 libraries in the inikn'al
plan. although this has been severety wrtailed as a resuli of the Cowd-19 pandemic in 2020
and 2021 with sthocAs dosed for kjng periods of tlme. Ugandan schools have endured
full lockdowns. Trainin9 has eontinuad to bo given to all library schools. with the continuing
aim that pupils in neighbouring schools will be able lo use these libraries as borrowing and
reference hubs but again this has been limrted owng to the pandem￿. Schools only opened
to classes again in January 2022.

Other events have also been severdy Curtai￿ indudiTVJ.'"

Flnancial Revlew
The Trustee$, aim was for the projed to become self4ustainiry in Uganda by the end of
2021. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affect*J thése plans and the target
date has been moved to the end of 2023.
Incomo in 2021 retumed to morè nomal levels followifVJ the fvndraising in tha wevious year
to help with the repairs to schools and libraties following flooding in the area (£4,074) and to
make the Chalk Project more effi¢ient (£3,QCQ). Accordingly. total income in 2021 amounted
to £5,560 compared with £15,038 in the previous year.
Unrestrided Income in 2021 of £2.028. ind￿ing Grfi Aid tax r8coverabl8. consisted of
almost entirely of grants from lnd1vhdua￿ Restricted income amounted to £3,533. Thls
represented grants from UK irKIivKluals and Organisatio￿ for sp8Crf￿ Ugandan schools,
organisations and Indivlduals.
Total Expenditure in the period was £12.924. Grants made to the South Rwenzori Diocese
EduGation Department to further the work of the charity in this region of Uganda amounted to
£8,048. Restricted expenditure amountad to £4.152 and refiects the expenditure of th8
restricted income Outlin￿ abo￿.
The resu￿ of the above income arKI experKliture was a deficit for the year of £7,364 {2020 -
deficit of £6,583). Wth the charity now reaching the end of it6 life the Trustees would expect
deficlts In future peri¢xls until all of the funds have been spent.
Cash balances at the end of the year amounted to £17.661. The chanty entered 2022 with
sufficient funds to continue its work through to the end of 2023. when rt is anticipated that the
work of the Charty will end.
Futur• Plan¥ and Challenges
During 2021 Education Uganda continued to fund Iwo fvll time stsff, who arè @mployed by
the South Rwenzori Diocese. Rov Alice Nabirye ts projec* coordinator and Keesi Bwanbale
has been replaced by Baluku Charfes as driver and chalk project ￿ordInatOr. Baluku
Chades has now established his rde as chalk project coordinator aItt￿￿h there was little
activity in 2021.
The office used by the team in Kasese conb'nues to be a fretrstanding buikling of two rooms
opposite thè eathadral. This providas office accommodation and space for chalk making.
The Trustees continue to explore opportunities to embed the use of slates alongside the use
of lextbooks for the USAID sponsored '1 Can Re￿ and Write, literacy programme for P11213
as this is Intr0dL￿ed in Kasese District sthools. Further training sessions have been
delivered by the project coordinator and these have showed that such training is both
welcome and viabl8. Many teachèrs are naturalty using slatés to support this currF¢xlum but
need guidance to get the full benefft fr￿7 them.
Chalk continues to be in commercial woduction, but sales arKI proffts have baan very low
due to the Contin￿1 closure of schools and lack of dwnand. Two staff continue to be

employed when possible. At full capaoty, the enterFKBe would be able to produ￿ 1,280
boxes of chalk per week which would enable chalk to be sold commercially well beyond the
Kasese School Distrid. Trte woiecvs aim is to produce 1,800 cartons of 24 boxes per
annum which should generate enough wofft to run the charity as it is organised at present
and make it sdf-sustsining.
The Trustees aim had always been to put the project on a fimi footing to be financialty and
slrate9ically self-sustaining in Uganda by the end of 2021, revised to end of 2022 but in view
of the continued impact of the pandemic now revised to of 2023. Operational funding to
the project from the UK will be reduced duriNJ 2022 and 2023 anticipating that the net profft
from sal8 of chalk will reach the target numbers set.
