Flnanclal revlew
Revlew of tho charfty's flnanclal posftlon at the end of the perlod
During the 202>24 financial year RAY received income of £277,898. which was a reduction of 16% from
the previous financial year. and spènt £331,463 (increase of 43%). Th• majority of FIAY'S funding
comprised grants from charltles and local government. Grant income was lower than last year, when RAY
received some large one￿ff grants and additional funding following a significant increase in demand, when
a hotel in York was opened to 450 asylum seekers. Regular donation income was consislent with previous
years, but there were mor8 one-off donations in 2022-23, in response to high profile avents including the
8rr¢val of refugees from Ukraine. Expendtture incre88ed in 2023-24 because of the $u$talned hlgh demand
for RAY'S sa￿lC8s. RAY employed more staff and ran mor8 activities to support th8 increas8d number of
service users. This level of demand has continued into the 2024-25 financial year. As a lemporary measure
following a large number of new arrivals in York in winter 2022. RAY coordinated and ran a clothing bank
ft)r several months In 2023-24.
In accordance wlth RAY'S flnanclal strategy, fundlng was Sought and obtalned from dfverse sources in Ihe
2023-24 financlal year, to ensure financlal 8tablllty. RAY 8eeks a mlxture of multi-year and Ind(vidual grants.
The funding environment remains challenging and comp8titive. Generous donations from the public
continue to provlde 8 vftal Source of unrestrlcted funds, which allow RAY the Ilexibillty lo be agile and
respond rapidly to global events that cause people to seek refuge and asylum in the UK and. ultimately,
York.
gtatement explalnlng tho pollcy for holdlng re8erve• statlng why thoy are held
Th8 charty relies on grants and donations to meet its objectives, FIAY has a policy of holding a18vel of
unrestricted reserves In order to be able to fund operating expendtture for three to Six months, should
grants and other funding obtained not be sufficient to maintsin services and react ftexibty to extemal events
Sn the short tenn. The trustees have designated a small fund to ensure that reserves remaln avall8ble for
hardship payments to th088 m¢)st in need.
Amount of re8èrvM held
Al the year end RAY held reserve8 of £210,513, over 96% of whlch wa8 held In ca8h. Around 84% of totsl
reserves represented restricted funds, monies given to RAY for Specific purposes. Tho charity held
unrestricted re88Nes of £65.670 at 31 March, equlvalent to 2.4 months of expenditure, wthlch 18 sllghtly
