In September 2021 Wales was finally coming out of the Covid 19 lockdown restrictions. We reopened in the YMCA Plas Centre in Shakespear St Cardiff. The YMCA opened its doors to us and allowed us to use the new youth wing in the building and all its facilities.
Covid has seen a huge number of children deregistered from schools across Wales and along with them came changes in the way the Welsh Assembly Government viewed Home Educating families. Local authorities have been given funding to distribute to families to support learning and legal moves are being pushed forward to force families to register as home educators. This constitutes the first time historically that families have been forced to register for a lifestyle choice.
We made the decision to change the public face of the charity in order to make it more accessible to new families and easier to find. In 2022 with the consent of both Companies House and the Charity Commission we changed our name from New Foundations Home Education to Home Education Wales.
Our new home at the YMCA has been very supportive we have started to use their small garden to grow vegtables with the children, and we are running creative activities each week. Post covid the children we are meeting are now less interested in organised activities and more in playing freely with their friends. Following 2 years of lockdowns and restrictions we feel they need time in which to do what comes naturally and not be pressured to help them transition into the new ‘normal’.
