In April 2020 Wales was in lockdown as a result of the pandemic Covid 19
We had long been involved in the fare share project and decided that it was within our remit to now share that food locally rather than through our normal members who were not allowed to travel to collect items. We soon received a grant via Interlink RCT for £2000 to provide food parcels locally and used this to buy essential items such as toilet rolls, washing powder etc from In kind direct where we have been members for some time. This meant that local people had more money left to spend on their choice of food stuff not just what we could provide. By far the largest part of the money was spent in Supermarkets on kitchen essentials such as pasta and rice for food parcels. Local families were a great support in helping us identify what might be most useful particularly for families with older family members as well as identifying families who were struggling. Local families also stepped up to deliver most of the food parcels.
Talking online to families allowed us to consider what else they might feel was important to them in the circumstances we all found ourselves. The message that came back was that families felt that the children needed something. Many local families had limited resources and needed some more practical help. Tesco kindly donated lots of paper and craft items and we spent considerable time making people aware of the laptops being distributed via schools. Then we managed to acquire a small grant £1000 to start a toy library.
Toys were purchased that we hoped to use to catch the interest of children and encourage them to learn a new skill, be active and stay positive. These included hula hoops, stilts, juggling plates as well as other items.
In September 2020 our committee members moved the charity to a new area, and the toys were handed over to the local community council running activities where we had been based.
