WORTLEY RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED
TRUSTEES’ REPORT (Incorporating the Directors' Report) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] MAY 2025
Chairman's Report
Well, this is now my tenth year as Chair Wortley Rugby Union Football Club. It’s been a very productive year for the club with many great achievements both on and off the great pitches often referred to as ‘the hallowed green turf of Wortley’ . With this in mind, the Grounds Sub Committee have done an exceptional job under the leadership of Lee Marsh in keeping the pitches at such a high standard we now find them.
It is with great sadness that Paul Harrison is stepping down from his role of First Team Coach. Paul as worked tirelessly to improve skills, fitness, teamwork and general ‘esprit de corps’ . Along with the rest of the Club I wish Paul all the best for the future and would ask him still to be involved whenever available.
We continue to strive for the ongoing development and the continuous improvement of facilities with the action of the club members, who surrender time, effort and enthusiasm to drive Wortley Rugby Club to bigger and better places. If I could ask one thing of the anyone who reads this document, may it be that you become one of these great supporters who work tirelessly in order to sustain the growth the Club and to make it flourish.
As we move into Wortley's 22th Rugby Union season, it is fantastic that the club continues to develop across all fronts. From the vibrant minis (U6s-U16s) to the seasoned, senior men and women's teams, the Touch and Walking Rugby, and most recently the T1 Rugby sessions, it’s clear that growth has been the defining theme.
Throughout, our club membership has blossomed, not just in rugby prowess, but in confidence and character, embodying the core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship at every turn.
The Men's First XV Season, started with the Clubs first venture into the Yorkshire Leagues, to play in Yorkshire 4. This was a big step up for the first team, with fierce competition amongst well established Clubs. We certainly seem to have stepped up to the mark and have played great and valiant rugby through the season. We were aware that some people questioned the decision but the players were confident.
After a strong pre-season, any minor doubts that lingered were quickly cast away after a comprehensive victory away at Yorkshire 3 Barnsley, even with 8 first team regulars missing.
First up in the league were the eventual runaway, champions Dearne Valley. A great performance but ultimately a loss, our first taste of Yorkshire 4 rugby and we'd more than held our own.
Determined not for it to turn into a season of plucky losses, we found our groove and won 3 out of the next 4 games, including a big win over Stockbridge and a huge victory away in the rain of Hessle
By the Xmas break we were in second, sitting above some more established clubs.
The Christmas period brought with it a spell of bad luck with the turning weather disrupting training and a number of unfortunate injuries meant the first few months of 2025 were played with a skeleton team. The core of the lads that showed up week in week out truly show what the club is all about.
A tough run in only meant one victory towards the end of the season but the lads more than proofed they belong as this level.
The season ended on a more positive note though as players returned from injury we enjoyed done memorable road trip victories at Tupton and Linley.

TRUSTEES’ REPORT (Incorporating the Directors' Report) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] MAY 2025
Some fantastic rugby, some worldly tries and done great memories were made in this first season in Yorkshire 4. With a bit more luck, we should be pushing for top 3 next year.
Captain’s Highlights
-Beating our local rivals Stockbridge in the first round of the Fox Valley cup!
-Highest place in the league of 3[rd] before Christmas.
-Nick Riggs managed to play again this year at the age of 61.
-We beat the team in Stoke and had an eventful coach trip.
-We played away at Hessle during a storm with minimal players and managed to secure the victory. -We have had multiple touch rugby training sessions with the Women's team throughout the season helping to keep us as one club.
Without further ado, let's celebrate this season's outstanding award winners:
Best Newcomer: George Peacock Most Improved: Myles Scholefield
Player of the Season: Dan Trainer
This year, for the Ladies Team , Justine Keen has stepped into the role of captain for pretty much the whole season, not only has she arranged games, sorted majority of the season out. She's kept the passion for the game at Wortley for the Women’s Team. She's been a real asset to the club and the whole club want to thank her for all her hard work and effort this season.
The Women’s Team is growing from strength to strength with coaches Mick O'Toole and Sean Hopper. Contact training is weekly and the women are learning and pushing themselves into the contact which is awesome. This season we played our first ever contact game at home, we've had a number of players to help NC3 teams and have a forever growing team of talented women who strive for the best in themselves but also come to see team mates. ( from Justine )
“This has been another great season for the women’s team who played their second year in the Allianz inner warrior series.
We have welcomed new players and maintained an excellent core group who continue to grow in confidence and experience.
This year has seen the development from playing touch to playing contact rugby which is a huge step forward. The club saw a significant milestone towards the end of the season with the Wortley Women hosting their first ever home contact fixture which resulted in victory.
The team have worked really hard to improve and keep the momentum going. Overall, it has been a very successful season and we look forward to continuing to grow in both touch and contact next season.”
Finally, our Junior Section stands as a beacon of pride, their achievements resonating both on and off the field, showcasing exemplary character and sportsmanship. Each young warrior has upheld the club's legacy with honour, demonstrating to other clubs the formidable spirit of Wortley. With such promising talent, the future gleams brightly ahead.

TRUSTEES’ REPORT (Incorporating the Directors' Report) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] MAY 2025
(Report from Martin Wright )
“As we bring this fantastic season to a close, it’s time to reflect on what has been a year of growth, resilience, and community spirit across the Wortley Minis and Juniors section.
First and foremost, a massive thank you goes to the incredible volunteers in The Shack, who’ve kept us all fuelled and warm with much-needed catering week after week. Your efforts have not only nourished our young athletes and supporters but also created a welcoming and friendly environment for visiting clubs. To all our volunteers, your time and dedication do not go unnoticed — this club thrives because of you.
A special mention must go to the Kirk family, whose breakfast box raffles raised over £1,000 this season — an amazing contribution that makes a real difference. Thank you for going above and beyond.
On the pitch, the season has been just as impressive. Our coaches have worked tirelessly to develop the rugby skills of every player while ensuring the core values of Rugby Union — teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline, and sportsmanship — are firmly embedded in all that we do.
U12s: After a slow start, this squad showed what hard work and commitment can achieve. Their progress was clear to see, with impressive victories over teams like Dinnington, Rotherham, Sheffield Tigers, and Thorne. But more than the results, it was the boys' attitude — in both victory and defeat — that stood out. They’ve been a credit to the club, to their families, and to themselves.
U11s: What a team! The growth of these young players has been phenomenal, not just in terms of size and strength, but in their spirit and unity. They play for each other and with heart, week in and week out. The bond they share is special, and it’s been a privilege to witness.
U10s: Now 10 players strong and joined by some complete newcomers to rugby, this squad has embraced every challenge. They’ve learned and executed skills like rucking, mauling, and scrummaging with increasing confidence and have been recognised by opposition coaches for their tenacity and technical development. Their coach and families should be incredibly proud.
To all our Mini Warriors: you’ve made us proud every single week. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned player, you've shown bravery, effort, and joy — all the things that make rugby such a special sport. As we look ahead, we hope to grow next season with new teams, more coaches, and fresh opponents. But no matter what, our core will always be the same: a passionate, welcoming, and hard-working community that puts kids at the heart of everything.
Thank you for an unforgettable season. See you all next year — bigger, stronger, and ready for more!”
With regards the U16’s Richard Marshall prepared the following statement
“A number of key players left the club over the summer to pursue a combination of opportunities at other clubs (1) or other sports/activities (6). This left us with a squad of 14 with no specialist scrumhalf or full back.
Following a pre-season friendly with Rotherham Phoenix, who expected similar numbers by the start of their season, an agreement was made to combine our two clubs to form a single competitive squad for the 2025-25 season and to ensure u16 rugby continues at both clubs.

WORTLEY RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED
TRUSTEES’ REPORT (Incorporating the Directors' Report) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] MAY 2025
As ‘Phoenix Warriors’ we entered the Yorkshire Cup and arranged an additional 18 friendly fixtures against a combination of Yorkshire and NLD teams. Home fixtures were divided between Rotherham (Herringthorpe) and Wortley.
Excluding cancellations, 17 fixtures were played in total with 4 wins, 1 walkover in our favour and 12 defeats. However, the waterfall structure of the cup competition ensured that we were finalists in the ‘Americas’ group with the final played on 23 March at home against Aireborough. Unfortunately, this resulted in a 15-43 defeat. Bringing together two groups of players has come with its own challenges, but the coaches have worked hard to create a single team ethos, forming a single tactical plan whilst continuing to coach key skills. We ended the season with 20 players and a 7-57 away win at Worksop.
It is expected that we would retain 10-12 players over the summer as several look to focus on college rugby or future work commitments. As this is insufficient to enter a colts competition in our own right, we have arranged a number of joint training sessions with the existing Rotherham Phoenix u17 colts team - who are already combined with the Dronfield Colts team.
All of the existing u16 squad have been invited to join and we expect around 6-8 to take up that offer for the 2025-26 season with others joining Doncaster or Wath. I expect a number will be interested in joining Wortley first team squad the following season.
Gareth and Richard, on behalf of the players and parents would like to place on record their thanks to Wortley RUFC for the support and opportunities provided and we hope to see a few of them back in a Wortley shirt in the coming years”
We have had continued support from our sponsors:
Darwin Dairy’s, Glide, Sheffield Distillery, Leggett & Platt, Strolling 4 Shoes, Parker Roofing, Sharnis Pet Service, Unique Physio, Belmayne and obviously CBC computers that haven’t only sponsored the club but been sponsors for many years.
Without the kindness of these company’s we wouldn’t be able to run any teams let alone the club I would personally like to thank them for all the help and assistance provided Moving forward into the coming season Wortley RUFC will welcome Patrick Fitzpatrick as the First Team Coach and I am convinced he will add significant value to the Club has he has done for many years, a great asset.
Our volunteers are our life blood not just of the club, but for the whole game and we need to treasure them. We are so blessed as a club to have so many wonderful volunteers who work so hard on our behalf, hopefully we can attract more over the coming season.
As chairman, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who as contributed in any way to our success, and all we have achieved in this last season in challenging times, the commitment and dedication we see at Wortley is truly inspiring, any club is only as good as its members.
Thank you all
Tim Smith Chairman
