National Youth Recorder Orchestras GB Administrator’s

Report 2024-2025

30 players booked on events during the year. Of these, 9 were new to NYRO and 9 attended 2 or more events. Altogether, there were 40 bookings. That was down by 8 on last year and was largely due to the disappointing response to Recorder Days.

Totals 7 4 £245.00 £1,972.75 (£1,727.75)

The average cost of the Recorder Days throughout the year was approximately £430.

Scheduled Recorder Days in Ipswich and Oxford were cancelled, as there were no bookings. The Recorder Day in Bristol was also cancelled, as one of the two players booked on broke his arm.

Easter Course 2025

We were back at Rugby School for our Easter Course. Numbers remained the same as last year, with 10 players attending, of whom 2 were new to NYRO. There were 11 bookings but one player dropped out just before the course.

It was once again a highly successful course. The average age was up on last year at 14.4, and the children all bonded extremely well, with the new students becoming fully integrated into the group almost immediately. We rehearsed all together and in two groups and the players also enjoyed chamber music sessions. We went swimming and played badminton as well as our evening games, which included an Easter Egg Hunt and, of course, games of Werewolves.

Our tutor for the week was Francesca Clements with Dianne Charles as house staff.

The overall cost of the course was £3,635.33 this year. We had to pay for a minimum of 30 people for the week, which was 10 more than last year.

Summer Course 2025

We had 20 bookings, which was an increase of 2 over the previous year. Of these, 4 were new to NYRO. Three were recommended to attend the course by their teacher and the fourth found out about the course through research.

The tutors for the week were Heidi Fardell, Francesca Clements (also helping with house staff duties) and Chris Orton (until Friday only).

We welcomed 4 ex-players attending the NYRO-X event.

Feedback from Students and Parents

Recorder Days

Polly attended last Easter and had a fabulous experience. She came home inspired to play more.

Easter Course

Dear Di,

Happy Easter! I just wanted to thank you for yet another wonderful week of NYRO. I feel I have multiple happy memories for each day and everyone was smiling and laughing all week. Thank you for providing this opportunity to make such good friends and share the joy of playing together. Looking forward to seeing everyone again for the summer course, Jessica Hood

I’ve been meaning to write and say what a wonderful time she had on the course. Recorder is her first love, and ensemble playing in particular, so it was amazing to have some dedicated time to indulge that.

Summer Course

Our daughter Elizabeth loved her time at the NYRO summer course, and is very keen to join in again.

A belated note to say thank you so much for the NYRO summer course. Maria Laura had an amazing time as always - and we loved the concert.

Stephen was so impressed with your concert, he said it was an incredible standard and absolutely amazing. Ted clearly had the most fantastic time and hasn’t stopped talking about it since coming home.
