Easter Course 2024

We were back at Rugby School for our Easter Course. Numbers were slightly up on last year, with 10 players attending, of whom 3 were new to NYRO. One player booked onto the Summer Course as soon as he got home from the concert.

It was a highly successful course. The average age was 13.5, and the children all bonded extremely well. We rehearsed all together and in two groups and the players also enjoyed chamber music sessions. We went swimming and played badminton as well as our evening games, which included an Easter Egg Hunt and the ever-popular games of Werewolves.

Our tutors for the week were Miriam Monaghan and Michelle Holloway and Dianne Charles and Nathan Winters acted as house staff.

The overall cost of the course was £1,560.20 this year. We had to pay for a minimum of 20 people for the week.

Summer Course 2024

18 players attended the Summer Course 2024, two of whom were attending a NYRO course for the first time. Attendance was up on the previous year.

Our week at Uppingham this year was mainly very hot and sunny. We were in a different house – The Lodge – which had a large common room and the luxury of wash basins in every bedroom! It was very difficult to navigate at first and made

the treasure hunt very challenging…

We played through a wealth of music, and we also enjoyed tennis and badminton at the Sports Centre as well as a swimming session. The traditional NYRO Ceilidh took place in the Foyer at the Theatre so that we could have the front doors open and let some cool air in. Film night this year featured Night at the Museum and of course, Werewolves was the game of choice back at the Lodge. There was even time for some busking at the Friday market. Some people remembered us from last year and four even came to the concert on Saturday!

Our tutors for the week were Heidi Fardell and Francesca Clements.

Dianne Charles was responsible for the day-to-day running of the course, as well as coaching chamber groups and playing in the concerts.

The concert was recorded and is available as a CD or download.

The Summer Course had a net cost of around £1,300, as we had to pay for a minimum number of 30 at Uppingham.

We welcomed former players Richard Ash and Samuel Constable to NYRO-X this year.

Feedback from Parents and Students

Easter 2024

I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful course. Nahum really enjoyed it.

Thank you for organising a fabulous course, Polly had a great time and has already asked if she can go again next year.

Summer 2024

I just wanted to say thank you for running and managing the NYRO course - I had a great time!

I’ve loved NYRO this week, especially having the opportunity to play lots of new repertoire with my fellow recorder playing friends.

I have been to many NYRO courses and this one has been great! I’ve made lots of new friends and have explored new repertoire as well.

I’ve been at NYRO for a while now and I always look forward to it. Out of all the music courses I’ve done (I’ve done loads) this is the absolute best.

This is my second year at NYRO and it remains the most fun I’ve had ever. For me, it seems like when children view Christmas every year.

This is my third year at NYRO and it has gotten better every time. My favourite part of the course is when we go busking at the market on Friday.

This is my second time at NYRO (I went to Easter 2024) so I pretty much knew no-one here at the start of the week. I’ve loved getting to know people throughout the week.
