Tabea Debus also led a NYRO Mini workshop on Renaissance Ornamentation, attended by 6 people, with a net cost of £24.
Easter Course 2023
We were back at Rugby School for our Easter Course. Numbers were lower again this year, with only 8 players attending, one of whom was new to NYRO and will be booking again for 2024.
Despite the low numbers, it was a highly successful course. The average age was younger than ever, at just under 13, and the children all bonded extremely well. We worked hard in rehearsals and chamber groups and enjoyed a swimming session and various sporting and fun activities, including an Easter Egg Hunt and the ever-popular evening games of Werewolves.
In view of the low numbers, we had just one tutor for the week, Michelle Holloway, but she was assisted by the house staff, Dianne Charles and Beth Toulson, both recorder players, who coached the chamber groups and played in the tutor concert and the concert at the end of the course in the New Music Room.
The overall cost of the course was £1,569.60 this year.

Summer Course 2023
==> picture [485 x 325] intentionally omitted <==
15 players attended the Summer Course 2023, only one of whom was attending a NYRO course for the first time.
We had another wonderful week in Uppingham, and possibly the best week of the summer in terms of weather. Although not particularly warm and sunny (except on concert day!), at least it wasn’t too wet.
As well as plenty of music, we also enjoyed table tennis and dodge ball at the Sports Centre and the traditional NYRO Ceilidh. Film night this year featured The Truman Show, which was an absorbing evening’s entertainment. Activities at the house included a quiz and the inevitable and ever-popular Werewolves.
Our lead tutor for the week was Chris Orton, who was joined by Annabel Knight for the first 3 days of the course and then by Heidi Fardell later in the week.
Dianne Charles was responsible for the day-to-day running of the course, as well as coaching chamber groups and playing in the concerts. She was assisted by Liane Beech as a member of house staff.
The concert was professionally recorded and is available as a CD or download.
The Summer Course had a net cost of £3,603,62, as we had to pay for a minimum number at Uppingham.
NYRO-X 2023
We were delighted to welcome 7 ex-NYRO players and staff this year: Naomi Wellings, Elizabeth McCall, Samuel Constable, Hannah Rose, Ruth Bryson, Richard Ash, Katy Ferns (pictured left to right)
==> picture [357 x 268] intentionally omitted <==
They played two items in the concert, and it was wonderful to have them with us. Between them, the players covered every year from 2002 to 2019 and Naomi was our Administrator until 2009.

I just wanted to say thank you to you and Annabelle for the online day today. Jessica really enjoyed it and feels that she has learnt a lot.
Easter 2023
Just a quick note to say thank you to you and your team for running the Easter course. Ted absolutely loved it and was rather sad that he could stay for longer! He is already talking about the course next year!
Thank you for an amazing course. Esmé thoroughly enjoyed herself. We were amazed at how much you had covered and the concert was fantastic.
Arthur had such a lovely time and is very keen to come along again next year!
Wanted to let you know that Soča had a fantastic time at the NYRO Easter Workshop. She is naturally looking forward to the Summer Workshop too.
Bristol 2023
Yesterday in Tockington near Bristol my daughter Maria has spent a lovely day with you playing recorder. Thank you for organizing this and pass on my daughter Maria's warm regards to the lady who was leading the workshops yesterday with you.
Summer 2023
Jonathan seems to have had such a wonderful time this week - halfway home he suddenly said, "Please can I go next year?" Thanks so much for your efforts - it is much appreciated.
Robert is simply loving NYRO, everything about it, the socials, the practice, the exposure to improve his sight-reading, and playing in ensembles.
Many thanks to you and your team for organising the summer school. Ishbel had a great time and we enjoyed the concert.
Thank you ever so much for giving Jessica a fulfilling week in Uppingham. Jessica has done a fair few residential courses over the years (playing violin) but says NYRO is by far the best. Thank you for inspiring her. We will try to spread the word as best we can in the hope that a few more will join in next year.
