National Youth Recorder Orchestras GB Administrator’s
Report 2021-2022
In the 2021-22 season, NYRO activities were able to resume more or less as normal, although there were not as many face-to-face Recorder Days as in pre-Covid times. We still ran two Online Days to cater for those players who were not able to travel.
45 players booked on events during the year. Of these, 18 were new to NYRO and 18 attended 2 or more events, with one player attending 6 times. Altogether, there were 69 attendances.
Two of our regular players came all the way from Lancashire for our Bristol Recorder Day! We were also delighted to welcome Val Giltrow-Taylor, the SRP Secretary, who came to listen to the play-through at the end of the day.

Easter Course 2022
We were delighted to be back at Rugby School for the first time since the lockdown. Numbers were lower than we would have expected pre-Covid, with only 10 players attending, but 5 of these were new to NYRO this year and two of these new players immediately booked onto the Summer Course on their return home.
Pastorally, it was a highly successful course. The average age was just under 14 and the children all bonded extremely well. We worked hard in rehearsals and chamber groups but found plenty of time for swimming, sports and fun activities, including an Easter Egg Hunt and the ever-popular evening games of Werewolves.
Our tutors for the course were Joris van Goethem and Michelle Holloway, whose combined energy gave the course a vibrant and lively feeling. The house staff, Dianne Charles and Beth Toulson, are both recorder players and were kept busy looking after the players as well as coaching chamber groups and playing in the tutor concert and the concert at the end of the course in the beautiful Temple Speech Rooms.
The overall cost of the course was £894.73 this year.
Summer Course 2021
21 players attended the Summer Course 2023, coming from as far away as Swizterland and the Republic of Ireland. Three of the players were attending a NYRO course for the first time.
We had another wonderful week in Uppingham, with warm, sunny weather for most of the time. As well as rehearsals for NYRO and NYTRO and the Combined Forces, we kept ourselves active with swimming, badminton and football. By popular request, our film night featured “Mamma Mia 2” which we enjoyed with drinks and popcorn. We divided the players into small groups for chamber music and we had a tutor concert and a student concert during the week, finishing with our Summer Concert in the beautiful Memorial Hall. Other activities included games of Herd Mentality and, of course, the Werewolves, as well as the traditional and very noisy ceilidh.
Our tutors for the week were Chris Orton and Michelle Holloway. They were joined for part of the week by Annabel Knight, who coached the most senior of the chamber groups and introduced the players to some of her latest arrangements.
Dianne Charles and Beth Toulson looked after the day-to-day running of the course, as well as coaching chamber groups and playing in the concerts.
The concert was professionally recorded and is available as a CD or download.
The Summer Course made a small surplus of £258.53.

Easter 2022
Thank you so much again for the wonderful experience, Ellie could not stop telling us about her adventures! You are all absolutely amazing :)
Robyn has clearly had a brilliant week - both musically and socially - so thanks to you and all your staff for offering such a great course.
Summer 2022
Just a short note to you and your team to say thank you very much for organising the Summer school. Ishbel had a great time and we enjoyed the concert very much.
Thank you so much for sending over the NYRO souvenir programme. Huge thanks to the team for giving the young recorder players a memorable Summer course.
Christopher has regularly attended NYRO Easter and Summer courses since age 9. He enjoys the ensemble playing and how the tutors continue to find the right parts for everyone’s level, even as players develop.
Feedback from Students
I loved the NYRO camp this year and hope to return again.
I joined NYRO in 2019 and it is great fun; this year I especially enjoyed playing Paetzold contrabasses and working with my chamber group.
NYRO summer camp was so much fun this year and I got to play football again! I played contrabass (Paetzold) for the first time.
I have been playing the descant recorder since I was 5 and since then I have picked up various other recorders, some very recently. I enjoy NYRO because it gives you the chance to meet other recorder players, discover new recorders and see what potential the instrument has.
I have made some nice friends at NYRO and look forward to spending time with them away from home. It’s lots of fun playing different recorders and being taught new pieces by new teachers.
I am 15 years old and have been attending NYRO for the last few years. I always look forward to it because everyone is so friendly and we always have a really fun week. It’s a great experience to play with other recorder players because there aren’t many opportunities for that, and we also get the chance to play different types of recorders. I would recommend NYRO to anyone who plays the recorder, and I would encourage everyone else to take up the recorder as they are missing out!
