Easter Course 2021

The Easter Course was held online and we had 19 players, of whom 3 were new this year. Our tutors were Annabel Knight and Michelle Holloway, with Chris Orton deputising for Michelle on the final day.

We made a surplus of £905 this year.

Summer Course 2021

We were lucky enough to be able to run our Summer Course at Uppingham School, with suitable measures in place with regards to the spread of Covid-19. The Administrator worked closely with the school and with various health professionals to ensure the safety of the course participants and we were rewarded with 2 sets of negative lateral flow tests during the week.

The children and the parents were so pleased to have been able to run the course face-to-face and hold the end-of-course concert in the beautiful Memorial Hall at Uppingham; this made all the careful preparations and anxiety worthwhile.

Sadly, Chris Orton, our Musical Director, was unable to attend, as someone on his flight from Spain subsequently tested positive for Covid-19. We were able to allow him to conduct some warm-ups via Zoom in the Lecture Theatre. Michelle Holloway and Annabel Knight were the tutors for the course, with some assistance in Chris’s absence from Dianne Charles and Beth Toulson, who were primarily there as House Staff.

Bookings were slow, but a sudden rush of applicants just before the course brought the numbers up to 22 and the course made a surplus of £1,675.08.

Feedback from Parents during the Year:

Thanks again for yesterday, she had a ball.

Thanks for yesterday, Dianne. Kerensa had so much fun. As ever, she got so much more out of the day being in the higher group.

Huge thanks to you, Miriam and Annabel for all your hard work preparing and running the NYRO events. Jenny has really enjoyed the playing days and it is great that this has been able to keep going despite everything that is going on in the world. There is always huge excitement in our house in the run up to an event and Jenny is currently regaling her grandparents about it all in great detail!

Many thanks for the NYRO days that you've run this year. My son Thomas has done a few of them now, and it's been great for him! The organisation and tutors have been fantastic. It doesn't look like you have more planned online currently but we'd definitely sign up if you do run more online days.

Thanks so much for today. Ted had a fab time.

Many thanks to you all for everything you did for Rose during the summer course. She has lost motivation a bit for recorder over lockdown so it was really fantastic to see her enjoying her playing. Also she had a great time just being there and making friends. Obviously all down to how well run it was and the quality of the teaching, also very impressive.

Needless to say she will be back at Easter!

Just a quick note to say thank you so much for the course last week. Mia had a fabulous time and is already looking forward to next time.

It can't have been easy to organise with all the restrictions and uncertainty. Mia definitely really enjoyed it and has now gone off another course (cello this time) wearing her NYRO hoodie. She often feels that recorder is such a niche instrument; it's great to be able to have the opportunity to meet and play with other recorder players.

Thanks again and please do pass on our thanks to the tutors too.

Thank you so much for giving Jessica the opportunity to play with you this week. She has come back full of enthusiasm and determination to push herself to get into a position to join the main orchestra.

The concert itself was wonderful. The hall was a beautiful setting for the diverse performances we listened to. This being the first event since the pandemic that we have attended made it feel even more special. Inspirational and a great credit to everyone involved.

We look forward to future courses to come. We are very grateful for all the work that goes into making these events possible. Please pass on our thanks to all the tutors.
