National Youth Recorder Orchestras GB Administrator’s Report 2019-2020

During the year, 98 players booked our courses and recorder days, of whom 41 were new to NYRO. This includes all the players who participated in the NYRO Online Summer Course and the NYRO-X event. Recorder days were held in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and London. Those planned in Kent and Aberdeen had to be cancelled, as they were due to take place in May 2020.

Recorder Days 2019-2020

Location Day PM New
This Year
Auditions Income Expenditure Surplus/Cost Budget
Birmingham 9 6 7 3 £405.00 £250.00 £155.00 £220.00
Edinburgh 12 3 8 1 £425.00 £635.00 (£210.00) (£465.00)
Cambridge 8 2 3 2 £295.00 £457.62 (£162.62) (£425.00)
Oxford 9 1 4 4 £280.00 £362.25 (£47.25) (£75.00)
Bristol 5 1 3 2 £220.00 £414.00 (£194.00) (£195.00)

Totals 54 13 28 14 £2015.00 £2601.37 (£646.37) (£1325.00)

The figures in green indicate that the day in question cost less than expected or made a larger surplus than expected. The low costs were largely down to the fact that the Administrator acted as second tutor on all 6 Recorder Days, thus saving £840. She also drove to Edinburgh and back, taking the other tutor as a passenger and charged only the cost of the petrol (£75) as opposed to the mileage, which saved a further £310.

Courses 2020

Easter Course

The Easter Course was the first casualty of the Covid-19 crisis. Rugby School cancelled the booking and there were no financial penalties.

The tutors for the course were to have been Michelle Holloway and Miriam Monaghan. Miriam is new to NYRO, but came with a strong recommendation. She is a member of Palisander and later joined us on the Summer Online course.

Summer Course

This was to have been held at Uppingham School; as they cancelled, we were able to claim back our deposit. They were reluctant to cancel but had to do so in the end for financial reasons and it was looking increasingly unlikely that any residential course of this kind would be possible by July of this year.

We decided to try an online course this year and it was a great success with 47 students attending, most of them for all 6 days. We ran it at the time that the original course would have run, but finishing on the Friday rather than the Saturday. Our three tutors were Michelle Holloway, Annabel Knight and Miriam Monaghan. Our theme was Dance Music through the Ages and we had Renaissance, Baroque and Modern music, each studied over two days. We split the students into three ability groups and the tutors worked with a different group for each of the three time periods. Students were encouraged to record their work and share it, and a video was produced as a souvenir of the course after the event, with recordings submitted by the 34 students who wished to be included, plus the 4 staff members.

A great deal of work went into the planning and hosting of this event and this was rewarded with a surplus of £4,360.02 and some excellent feedback.

A subsequent NYRO-X day was also successful, with 4 former players enjoying 3 hours of online tuition from Michelle and Miriam.

Feedback from Parents during the Year:

General

Just to say that Elen really enjoyed the Easter course last year. She has been in contact with at least one one of the girls she was on the course with and both are looking at going on the Summer course.

Thank you very much for your time. It means such a lot to have these opportunities.

London 2020

He had such a good time today that he asked me to sign him up for the Easter residential which I have just done!

Edinburgh 2020

Thanks again for yesterday. Sandy was still buzzing with excitement when I met him off a train in the evening.

Bristol 2020

I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful recorder day on Sunday. Phoebe had such a great day. It was great to hear them all play together and to see so many smiles. Pure joy! Please pass on my thanks to Annabel as well. I know that a lot of hard work will have gone into organising it.

Summer Online 2020

Also, I wanted to say a huge thank you to you, Miriam, Michelle and Annabel for running the course, Cecily loved it. She has come away really enthused and looking forward to the next one. Thank you so much for all your support, especially in dealing with her as a last-minute addition.

Can I just thank you and the tutors for the fantastic course you organised and delivered? Online is never ideal, but Nessie really benefitted from working together with everyone, and having a schedule of workshops to attend. She really enjoyed learning more about recorder and musical history and understanding the context better.

It really has been a boost for her and got her thinking and playing with more engagement.

I also wanted to personally let you know how much I enjoyed participating in NYRO online this year and how it was a great substitute regarding the current circumstances. It was really refreshing to finally be able to experience some sort of the thrill one gets from playing in an ensemble. I cannot thank you enough for your work at NYRO, even before the global pandemic - it has made me so much more motivated to continue to learn, practice and explore so much more of the recorder repertoire and to reach my musical potential in terms of playing the recorder.

Financial

The accounts for 2018-19 showed an excess of expenditure over income for the year of £4,718. This was partly because the Summer Course made a deficit rather than the expected surplus (fewer students than expected and the change of venue meant that the cost per student was £2 pppn higher than the original budget) and partly because grant funding was £2,500 lower than the original budget.

This entirely wiped out all our reserves and left NYRO owing £2,600 in administrator’s fees, plus £1,279 in administrator’s expenses.

However, lower costs, a successful Summer Online course and an unexpectedly high level of donations in 2019-20 resulted in an excess of income over expenditure of £11,314. All creditors from 2018-19 were paid and the Administrator was able to take a salary, but at 50% of the contracted rate.

This means that the organization went into 2020-21 with an accumulated fund of £8,872.
