Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The objects of the charity are:
1. To advance, improve, develop and
maintain public education in, and
appreciation of, the art of science and
music in all its aspects by any means the
trustees see fit, including through the
presentation of performances and recitals;
2. to further such charitable purpose or
purposes as the trustees in their absolute
discretion shall think fit but in particular
through the making of grants and donations
to enable students to take part.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The EYSM mission is to offer the best
possible opportunities to young people to
participate in an orchestral and vocal
summer course and to undertake new
musical experiences.
In doing so, EYSM adheres to the following
principles:
SafetyAll activities take place in an
environment of respect and safety for all
participants with regard to current
legislation and taking a lead from best
practice in education.
InclusivityThe chance to take part is
offered to any young person between the
ages of 11 and 21 (or 8 and 12 for Juniors)
who has the talent to take part in the work,
without any auditioning process. Where
economic background means the course
fee is unaffordable, EYSM endeavours to
find sponsorship to support young people
to attend.
ExcellenceEYSM supports the highest
possible standards and seeks always to
enable participants to experience both
artistic and personal growth. In doing this,
EYSM draws on the services of musicians
at the height of their profession who work
at reduced rates in order to support the
participation of young people with talent.
RangeEYSM seeks to explore a variety of
musical works across a range of genres
that extend the repertoire of performers
and other musical activities which extend
their overall musicianship.
Enjoyment and fulfilmentEYSM provides
an holistic experience encompassing a
wide range of musical experience in
playing, singing and listening. Ancillary
activities are structured around music and
sport and all of these support team work. In
carrying out its mission, EYSM keeps in
mind Charity Commission guidance on
public benefit and ensures that all activities
retain the focus of its aims and objectives.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 Trustees have regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity Commission on
public benefit. Updates and briefings sent
by the Charity Commission are distributed
and discussed.

Policy on grant making Para 1.38 EYSM’s policy is to seek out and provide
financial support to young people whose
families cannot afford the course fee.
EYSM has both private and corporate
sponsors, most of whom have been
supporters of the course for many years.
EYSM also welcomes young people each
year who are sponsored to attend following
a winning performance at a festival
affiliated to The British & International
Federation of Festivals.
Policy on social investment
including program related
investment
Para 1.38
Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 EYSM is run throughout the year by
volunteers which include trustees who take
responsibility for overseeing specific
sections of the work and reporting back to
trustee meetings.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 During the year 2021-2022, EYSM held a
live summer course for the first time since
the enforced break caused by the Covid
pandemic. The course took place in July-
August 2022 and had fewer students than
usual, mainly because families prioritised a
summer holiday about all else in this first
post-Covid year. Numbers were also
affected as student returners had passed
the age limit during the pandemic.
Trustees, having anticipated both these
things and predicted a lower number, were
pleased and surprised by the number of
students who had not only found and
followed EYSM on the internet during the
pandemic but decided to book places as a
result. This highlighted not only the value of
EYSM’s continued presence online during
the pandemic, but showed a significant
extension of EYSM’s geographical reach.
EYSM had been grateful when all of its
sponsors continued to support EYSM’s on-
line work during the pandemic. Post-
pandemic, all sponsors decided to continue
their support of the live course. Thus,
although the live course in 2022 was
smaller in terms of numbers it was wider in
terms of reach. At the close of the live
course, EYSM gained new members.
