SIXTEENFEET PRODUCTIONS TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2023

The trustees (who are also the directors) present their report and audited financial statements of Sixteenfeet Productions (the Company) for the year ended 31 March 2023. The statutory information is shown on page 1.

STATUS

The Company, number 07674820, is a private limited company by guarantee without share capital use of ‘Limited’ exemption and has a Memorandum and Articles of Association as its governing document. It is also a registered charity, number 1153684.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITES

The Company's principal activity during the year continued to be that of entertainment production.

PUBLIC BENEFIT

We believe that theatre is a force for stimulating ideas and discussion, encouraging creativity and broadening horizons. The Company tries to ensure its work is affordable to all, but in particular to young people who may not get the opportunity to participate because of social or economic factors. Our ethos is to create engaging and accessible theatre with a wide appeal. We achieve this by:

· Adapting classic stories and presenting them to a new generation in an entertaining, interactive, and involving way.

· Providing workshops for primary and secondary school children that help explore their creativity.

· Giving young people from local groups such as Brixton Youth Theatre an opportunity to work with us as volunteers and paid placements.

· Ensuring that our resources are affordable and accessible to our community.

MISSION

To bring theatre to local audiences, working in non-traditional spaces.

ARTISTIC POLICY

Sixteenfeet Productions provides an alternative theatre going experience. The company works collaboratively with local writers, musicians, and performers to produce inclusive new work, which challenges expectations and re-imagines the classics for a contemporary audience.

PROJECTS

Theatre on Kew 2022

A Summer Season of open-air Theatre at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

In March 2022 Sixteenfeet Productions signed the contract with The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew committing to produce an outdoor Theatre season at Kew Gardens and Wakehurst in July and August 2023. This is part of a three-year residency with a rolling contract subject to meeting conditions laid out by RBG and Sixteenfeet’s decision to continue to produce.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare Directed by Peter Hamilton Dyer Design: Set Ceci Calf, Costumes: Isobel Pellow Musical Director: Matthew Burns

Set in the 1920’s with a cast of 9 actor-musicians this was very well received critically and by those that attended. The seating area was open for picnickers from 6.30 and from 7.05 the pre-show of a 20’s musical cabaret with members of the cast engendered a feeling of enjoyment, good humour and shared experience and moved seamlessly into the show.

However, there were many challenges in the physical production, as we had to set up a theatre in a non-theatrical space with all the constraints of a Royal Park, which the company hasn’t previously experienced. This was hugely time-consuming and labour intensive. The loss of a key member of the team due to circumstances beyond the companies control further compounded the challenges and costs of the production

The Jungle Book

By Andrew Walsh inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s Mowgli Tales Music and lyrics Guy Holden Directed by Shane Dempsey Design: Alison Taylor Musical Director: Jack Blakey

Re-working a promenade production to a ‘picnic style audience’ was a new experience for the Company. Both Andrew Walsh and Guy Holden worked closely with the director to help realise this and make this a success. The audience reaction was very positive, and the production was well-received by audiences at both Kew and Wakehurst. The Mousetrap charity ‘Family First Nights’ included The Jungle Book at Kew in their programme of discounted tickets for families who would not otherwise afford to visit theatre events. Sixteenfeet’s production was voted the most popular show in audience feedback.

The show was also attended by over 200 children eligible for free school meals, including 30 from Brixton Community Based and refugee and asylum-seeking families through Care for Calais.

33333333333333333333333333

Overall neither production was marketed sufficiently well. We were unable to access the previous year’s ticket mailing lists through Kew. Access to our own ticket buyers after 3 years inactivity didn’t bring in sufficient sales and digital marketing did not generate the audiences we had anticipated. Despite numbers building steadily throughout the run, largely through word of mouth, both productions ran at a loss. Summary of the Season

Both shows were successful in terms of production values and audience feedback. The Kew team have invited us back for 2023 which means we achieved the standards expected of the company. We also learned valuable lessons in what is needed to make a successful season going forward.

However, we were not in a robust financial situation at the beginning of the season, and our inactivity financially due to the pandemic left us in a weak position to access funding. In order to take advantage of the opportunity to produce at Kew we needed to ensure that the season could be underwritten, and all obligations met. This was achieved through an interest free loan over the three years of the project.

Workshop Programme

Sixteenfeet has continued to work in partnership with Brixton Youth Theatre to deliver a free workshop programme to young people in Lambeth. This has included a new 7-11-year-old. strand to help offset the ongoing effects of the pandemic. Developing social skills, working together, creative expression and team building are even more important to young people’s mental and physical wellbeing. We have also worked in partnership with BYT to deliver drama workshops to children from an asylum-seeking background based in Lambeth. This included providing drama games, as well as Father Christmas, at three Christmas parties in hotels asylum seekers in Lambeth in December 2022.

Board

We are delighted to be joined by three new Board members this year. Colin Hurley, Jenifer Davis, and Victoria Hibbs, all of whom bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of working in the industry. We are also grateful for the considerable business advice and support we have received from Naz Choudhury including organizing and facilitating a successful Board Awayday in January 2023. Sixteenfeet Productions are delighted that Sir Mark Rylance continues as our Patron.

Future Plans for 2023

Theatre On Kew 2023

Due to our financial situation, we have reluctantly taken the decision to produce only one production this year which will be Alice in Wonderland adapted by Bradley Cole with music by Guy Holden. This was informed by our need to stabilize our finances, the cost-of-living crisis and also renovations happening at Wakehurst which would mean that we could not take shows there in 2023.

4

Community Engagement

One of our key aims in 2023 will be to widen our community engagement to ensure that we meet our remit of making theatre affordable and accessible to all. We aim to offer a minimum of 750 tickets free to families who would not otherwise be able to access a performance. This will include day entry to Kew Gardens.

We will continue to work with Brixton Youth Theatre to deliver a vibrant programme of free workshops to young people in Lambeth.

We will apply for funding for a community engagement officer to develop this programme.

The principal accounting policies adopted, judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty in the preparation of the financial statements are as follows:

1a. Basis of preparation

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) as amended by Update Bulletin 1 issued in February 2016, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011.

1b. Preparation of the accounts on a going concern basis

The trustees are of the view that the immediate future of the charitable Company for the next 12 months is secure and that on this basis the charity is a going concern.

Income from government and other grants, whether ‘capital’ grants or ‘revenue’ grants, is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the grants have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably and is not deferred.
