Shirley Community Church Trustees Report For The Year Ended 5[th] April 2024

The Trustees present their report and the financial statement for the year ended 5[th] April 2024. The trustees who served during this time and the current trustees are shown on page 3.

Structure, Governance And Management

The Trustees delegate the day-to-day business matters of the Church to the Leadership Team. The Leadership Team as of 5[th] April 2024 consists of Mr Gheorge Ciorna, Mr Stephen Williams, Mr Jonathan Heyes and Mrs Jane Heyes. Some of the practical matters are delegated to sub-groups (e.g., Deacons).

The Trustees present their report along with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 5[th] April 2024. Statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting practices set out on page 5 and comply with the charity’s applicable law.

Shirley Community Church is constituted under a trust dated 12[th] December 2012 and a memorandum of change dated 20[th] August 2023.

Shirley Community Church is a registered charity, number 1153617. Its address for meeting and administration purposes is Shirley Community Church, Green Lane, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands B90 1AA.

Objectives And Activities

The objectives of the Church are for the public benefit to advance the Christian faith in Shirley, Solihull and in such other parts of the United Kingdom and the world as the Leadership Team may from time to time think fit.

Activities And Performance

The reporting year, especially the first few weeks, were some of the most difficult in the history of the Church. The previous year had ended with the resignation of the Senior Minister (Gheorge Ciorna) and one of the other Church elders on the leadership team. The first weeks of April 2023 found the Church leadership attempting to deal with the issue that led to the resignations as well as continuing to lead the Church. In early May one of the trustees resigned.

The issue was brought to a conclusion in May 2023 when one of the trustees was removed from their position. Gheorge Ciorna was invited to return as a trustee from 5[th] June 2023 and reappointed as senior minister with effect from 1[st] July 2023. The Church’s other employee, Kijung Kim resigned from their position effective from the end of June 2023. The Kim family were living in Church House, next to the Church, and remained there until mid-August 2023 when they left to take up a new appointment in Bath. Gheorge Ciorna resigned as a trustee on 31[st] July 2023 when a new trustee Dr Alexander Pichler-Tennenberg was appointed. Dr Pichler-Tennenberg was also appointed to the leadership team but resigned later in the year in November 2023. He also resigned as a trustee on 29[th] December 2023 and a new trustee, Rev. Guichun Jun a former senior minster at the Church, was appointed.

In late August 2023 Gheorge Ciorna and his family took up residence in Church House on a licence. In November 2023 permission was granted from the Charity Commission to sell Church House to Gheorge and Olga Ciorna. As of the end of the reporting year the sale had not been progressed but was anticipated to be completed by the end of November 2024.

At the conclusion of the issue mentioned some people in the Church took the decision to move on to other Churches. As a result, the Church activities were reviewed. In July 2023 the Little Lambs group for parents and toddlers was closed. At the end of December 2023 the Monday Coffee Morning was also closed. The future of both groups remains under review and may be introduced again in the future. A youth meeting was re-launched in the autumn of 2023 on a Friday evening and held on a weekly basis. The group was originally run in collaboration with the Birmingham Chinese Evangelical Church (BCEC). By the end of the reporting year there were two separate meetings being held, one by BCEC and one by SCC.

Although some people had chosen to leave the Church as mentioned, the Sunday morning meeting continued to see new people joining including various ethnic groups. The prayer meeting continues to meet every Tuesday evening in the Church building. In January 2024 a new Sunday evening meeting was introduced which is held every two weeks. During the week small groups meet in various homes as well as a group meeting every other Saturday in the Church building. The series of quarterly breakfasts for both men and women continued until the summer of 2023 and were provided free of charge to the local community. In July 2023 there was a subsidised community day trip to Barry Island. Three quarters of the group were not regular Church attenders. The Youth Group meeting met monthly on a Friday evening. On New Years Eve 2023 a Church fellowship time was held in the early evening

The outside groups that used the Church building all continued to meet. The Brownies group meet on a Monday evening during term time. The Art Group meet twice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday during term time. The building frequently hosted a team from Good News for Everyone! (formerly GideonsUK) although this arrangement came to an end in the summer of 2023. Birmingham Chinese Evangelical Church (BCEC) continue to use the building for a Cantonese meeting every Sunday afternoon. They also held an extended meeting on Christmas Eve and a further meeting on the evening of 30[th] December.

The generous giving of members means that the support of activities and projects continued from the start of the reporting year. At the end of the reporting year the Church had two employees, the Senior Minister and a directly employed cleaner. In February 2023 an outside company was employed for cleaning the Church but this contract was ended and a new person employed directly by the Church from February 2024. All regular overseas support was reviewed and the decision taken to end support for Platform 67 and Project Wingi in Tanzania were ended. The support for feeding centres in Moldova was ended as the charity arranging this was closed down. From September 2023 an external company, Highland Payroll Services, were engaged to calculate payroll each month.

Financial review

The accounts are prepared on a receipts and payments basis. The accounts show an excess of expenditure of income for the reporting year. However there was an issue with the electricity supplier whereby the Church was overcharged for electricity. This was resolved at the end of the reporting year but the refund of the excess paid was not made until after the start of the new reporting year.

The Charity is principally funded by gifts and offerings from those attending the Church. This income is either through receipts direct to the bank account, or in the weekly offering taken up during the Sunday Service. Additional income is received from the use of the Church premises for meetings. There is also a residential property owned by the Church, which is let to a tenant, which generates further income.

The largest cost to the Charity is that of employment. There are two employees at the end of the reporting period, the Senior Minister and a cleaner.
